today, saturday, march 10, 2012. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a saturday. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm amy robach. watching that video i start to feel how the passengers must have felt watching this flight attendant go on a rampage. >> we've heard of passengers exceeding their bounds. this is different. the flight attendant announces over the p.a., i'm not responsible for crashing this plane. that's when passengers sprang into action and in just a moment we'll hear an exclusive from a man who was on that flight. then courtroom drama from coast to coast from the "desperate housewives" trial in hollywood to a man accused of using a cam to spy on his

roommate. plus, prince harry continues his tropical tour. this morning the prince is in brazil. coming up, we'll tell you who has been giving the prince some royal support. and i got to take a peek behind the curtain of the musical drama "smash." i caught up with the stars to find out why it's hitting a musical note with everyone. >> it's a fun show and the plot is thickening. let's talk first about the tense moments on the tarmac. passengers on an merge airlines flight were just settling in when the flight attendant began a disturbing rant on the p.a. system. nbc's michelle franzen has the story. >> reporter: the trouble began on american airlines flight 2332 as it was leaving the gate for chicago. >> i thought it was a reality show because it didn't seem real. >> reporter: passengers say that's when the flight attendant

went on a rant over the p.a. system, demanding the pilot open the cockpit and turn around because the plane was going to crash. >> and then a lot of other incoherent statements trying to get in communication with the cockpit. almost like she thought she was on the phone with them only. >> reporter: passenger video captured the moment when crew members struggled to subdue the woman described as a veteran attenda attendant. during the episode passengers say she complained about the airlines filing for bankruptcy reorganization, talked about a friend who died on 9/11 and said the plane wouldn't take off because she didn't have enough ice. she also mentioned she forgot to take her medicine for a medical disorder. when the plane returned the police were waiting. she was taken to a local hospital. american airlines says the attendant is receiving the proper care. it shows how crew members an passengers react and work

together in a post-9/11 world. >> what we're seeing is since 9/11 passengers are far more willing not just to take matters into their own hand bus to be active in responding to events inside the airplane. >> reporter: once the plane with the new crew on board landed in chicago, passengers say they realized this incident could have been worse. >> really blessed that we hadn't left the ground. >> reporter: for "today," michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. >> joining us now in the studio shaun tabbert who was on the flight. good to see you. >> good morning. >> what do you make of this? >> it was kind of a crazy event, lady having a real bad day. >> my understanding is she starts trying to call the pilot, but she's actually speaking on the p.a. >> exactly. >> when did you realize something was amis here. >> you know, once she repeatedly started calling the pilot, pilot, are you there, hello, hello. she went to spanish, hola,

como estas, that's when the red flag raised. >> when did the others get up and real lietz there was a problem. >> it took from i'm not okay with this, i'm not responsible for this, and she set the microphone down. that's when the other attendants kind of walked up and talked with her and tried to calm her down. >> you were sitting in the coach cabin. did you have a fairly clear view of what was happening up front? >> absolutely. you can see down the aisle. but everyone was leaning in and once the "crash" word was stated, that's when, you know, everyone kind of reacted. >> i mean i assume you know the plane's not at a risk of crashing, but you're not expecting this to come out of a flight attendant. what's the reaction of the people around you. >> no, absolutely. there was two young kids to my left, and they got real worked up, you know, mom, is the plane going to crash, mom, can we get off this, you know, what's going on. everyone else is kind of like

what's this lady doing, what's going on right now, and just real, i guess, on edge is what it was. >> and were you a witness to this where passengers and flight crew were trying to restrain her? >> absolutely, absolutely. i saw the people go up the aisle to help restrain her and hold her down, and they said she was biting and scratching at them. and then once we got back to the terminal and, you know, the police came on, that's when she started really screaming loudly and, you know, almost demonically as she was getting taken off the plane. >> it's very sad. obviously she has some real issues. did the pilot make any announcement as they were going to the gatd or did you think you were going to the runway at some point? >> no. and that was part of the problem. the pilot never responded to her because i think the pilot knew she was out of line. so we kept on heading toward the runway and then stopped when she

got back on the p.a. system and said, no, pilot, you're turning the plane around right now. i'm in charge of this flight. you guys can get off my flight if you want to. >> when you saw the other passengers get up, we all know it's a no-no to get out of the seat while the plane is moving and certainly to go to the front of the aircraft, but did it seem like they had any other choice but to step in in. >> no. we all knew what was going on. the entire crew understood that that this lady was having a bad day. >> all right. an incredible story. thanks for coming on and talking about it. we appreciate it. >> absolutely. here's amy. >> lester, thanks so much. u.s. employers hadded 227,000 jobs last most, capping off the three best months of hiring since the start of the recession. here to break it all down for is is brian shactman. good morning to you. >> good mosh morning, amy. >> 227,000 new jobs added and unemployment unchanged at 8.3%.

seemed a bit contradictory, but are we headed in the right direction? >> you have job growth of 227,000 as we talked about. it's over 700,000 in three months. why isn't the unemployment rate coming down. more are entering the work force. they say it's healthy and that's why it stays at 8.3%. it's interesting. i talked to one economist who said if you want to bring down the unemployment rate, you need 4 or 500,000 a month. it's a good news report but not great. you need a lot more to bring it down. >> the private sector add 2d 33,000 jobs. where specifically are those jobs coming from? >> there are 45,000 temporary jobs. business services, hospitality, which is good because people are taking vacations, spending money, positive manufacturing added 35,000. on the downside, construction was weak, which is

disappointing. that was down and obviously government still losing jobs. >> here's another big downer which may be drowning out this optimistic jobs report and that is gas prices. we may reach $5 a gallon, how is that playing into all of this. >> yeah. a lot of people are saying who knows if $5 are on the table or not. we've had an uncomfortable increase in gas prices and it's obviously having an impact on consumer spending and yesterday we learned wages aren't increasing to offset ichlt they're spending more money on fuel and less on other things whatting are helping to drive the economy. we're only 25 cents higher than a year ago so it looks like at these levels it won't derail the economy. but if we go to $4 in three months, all bets are off. >> thanks, brian shactman, we appreciate it. here's lester. many of the contenders are

the wrongful termination lawsuit by star nicollette sheridan is entering its final days. a jury of 12 will ke side on the

case early next week. nbc's michael taibbi has the details about the dirty lapp dri flying out in court. >> reporter: 49-year-old nicollette sheridan, friday was a day for her wrongful termination claim. he said repeadedly what she called a hard hit to the head was a tap to show the scene. they called it a miss communication between giving the actress direction. as to when to kill off her character edi britt. >> i know him quite well. we're kind of doing it. >> reporter: abc entertainment chief steve mcphearson said he approved killing edi off in 2008, four months before the hitting incident. still the legal team testified again there are no memos or

e-mails to back that up. >> we feel good. the jury ultimately decides but we feel good. >> reporter: on screen her character and ter ya hatcher's season were at each other. but she said she was critical of her and other stars. they said she was late half the time and he revealed a character. he revealed that james' character is going to be killed off this sunday and there were gasps in the courtroom. >> for "today," mike taibbi, nbc news, los angeles. the "desperate housewives" trial as it is known is just one high-profile case going on. here to weigh in on that and others is legal analyst sunny hostin. good morning. >> good morning. >> let's talk about that. what does the jury have to hone

on in this case? >> they have to hone in on was she wrongly terminateded. did they terminate her because she was a terrible employee or because of her complaints about her boss physically assaulting her. that's the question. i think that's where the jury system comes in. bottom line, they get to determine credibility, they get to determine who is right, and that's how our system works and it's rt a great system. the jury has sat in, gets to determine body language and determine who they believe. i want to turn to another case. john goodman a well known palm beach man. he settled a case with a victi victim's case. >> i don't think it's going to affect the trial because there's sort of a gag order in the case, so this jury shouldn't hear about the details of the civilian suit. this family, scott wilson's

family, has been so persistent in seeking justice for their son. they've sued other people, they've been successful there. they sued the bar goodman was drinking at before he got into the zibl e accident. so this case very much has been driven by the love of parents and so i don't think it's going to come into the trial but really, kudos, to these parents because they've been not only pressing the civil case. they have been in the courtroom for the criminal case day in and day out, and this is a really fascinating case because apparently goodman hit their son's car with his bentley after drinking many, many, many, many times at a bar and left their son to drown in a canal when his car flipped ore. at least that's the prosecution's allegation. >> i want to turn to a case closer to this area. the rutgers's webcam trial as it is known. he observed his roommate with another gay man. it's an invasion of priefrscy case and more importantly the

prosecution is trying to suggest there was a hate crime here. i sat in on a couple of days of this trial. it seems like a high bar for the prosecution. >> it is. this trial is really breaking ground. it's a bias intimidation case, a hate crime case, and it really hinges on the use of social media and whether or not this young man, you know, dar va rehab rabbi intimidated him. it's one of the few cases that the prosecution has to prove what was in his head. what motivated him to spy on his roommate. the defense is saying this is a young immature kid. he wasn't motivated by hate. he was motivated buy curiosity. maybe he wanted to big man on campus. he was a freshman at the time. so i do thing it's going be a rf dl case for the prosecution to prove because these hate crimes usually aren't shown this way. we hear about gay bashing but do
