tuesday in illinois. on wednesday, mitt romney who has been criticized for seeming out of touch with ordinary americans said he's not going to apologize for making a lot of money. newt gingrich insisted he's staying in the race because the more romney and santorum fight, the better he looks. schools will now be able to choose whether or not to use ground beef treated with ammonia. the u.s. department of agriculture announces today many are calling for the product popularly called pink slime to be banned. former illinois governor rod blagojevich heads to prison today to begin serving a 14-year sentence. he was convicted of corruption, found guilty of attempting to profit off barack obama's vacant senate seat. this picture was taken as blagojevich was flown to a federal prison in colorado. the girlfriend turned adopted daughter of a florida millionaire took the stand at his high profile dui manslaughter trial on wednesday. nbc's mark potter is in west palm beach again with details this morning. good morning, mark.

>> reporter: good morning, natalie. john goodman's girlfriend testified for nearly 15 minutes, but the jury was never told about how last year she was adopted by the defendant. >> do you swear or affirm the evidence you are about to give will be the truth? >> i do. >> reporter: 42-year-old heather colby was called by the prosecution to talk to the court about her boyfriend john goodman who is legally her dad after he adopted her to protect his fortune. >> so you know john goodman? >> yes. >> when and where did you meet him? >> at the international polo club. >> reporter: she and goodman began their relationship around the time of the incident two years ago in which 23-year-old scott wilson drowned when his car flipped into a canal. prosecutors say goodman was drunk and drove his bentley past a stop sign, hit wilson's car and then left the scene. he called colby before calling 911 for help.

under correct examination, -- direct examination, she didn't give much. >> do you recall him saying he looked both ways and no one was hurt? >> no. >> do you remember him saying he had a few drinks? >> no. >> you don't remember that? >> no. >> reporter: the defense claims goodman was sober at the time of the crash and his bentley malfunctioned and sped out of control. attorney roy black claims goodman was dazed and hurt after the crash and he walked to a friend's barn and took a stiff drink to ease his pain. on those points, the girlfriend/daughter may have been helpful to the prosecution. >> he didn't tell you his bentley wasn't functioning properly or anything like that? >> correct. >> he didn't tell you that he went to chris's barn and drank after the crash or anything? >> no. >> reporter: colby said she and goodman didn't discuss the case. under the advice of his lawyers. also taking the stand was deputy

ricardo stafford who said his car reeked of alcohol after goodman sat inside on the night of the crash. >> it smelled like someone had been drinking previously or that night and sweating. it was almost like it was coming directly through their pores. >> sweating out through his pores? >> yes. >> reporter: now the issue of adoption was never raised before the jury because it's considered irrelevant in this manslaughter trial. meantime, the jurors will leave the courtroom briefly to come outside here to see for themselves the cars involved in the fatal crash. natalie? >> reporter: mark potter in west palm beach. thank you. they say our culture is beauty obsessed but in yoda's case, being ugly was worth celebrati g celebrating. he was crowned the world's ugliest dog but won't have a chance to defend the crown. the chinese crested chihuahua mix won our hearts when she stopped by to celebrate her win last summer. yoda was 15 years old. that's 105 in dog years.

we could see some thunderstorms moved out of the mountains and that's your latest weather. natalie? >> this morning, do the eyes have it? the first telltale signs of a serious condition may be in your eyes. dr. keri peterson is a contributor to women's health and internist. good to have you here. >> good morning. >> eyes can show us an important window into our health. >> the eyes are amazing. when the eye doctor looks in the back of the eye they are gaining direct access to visualizing your blood vessels.

this is the only area in the body where you can see blood vessels from the outside world. the health of these vessels are reflective of the health of all small vessels in your body and the diseases we are talking about are seen in the eye, not in the mirror. >> the first one you say they are looking for are silver or copper colored arteries which could be a sign of high blood pressure. >> changes in the eyes are some of the earliest signs of high blood pressure in people who have no symptoms. 20% of people walking around with high blood pressure who don't know it. normally when the eye doctor looks in the back of your eye they see little red skinny vessels that are solid in color. with high blood pressure over time the vessels thicken and harden. it refracts light differently. it looks like a copper wire and then over time like a silver wire. >> interesting. next for those who have a mole in the inner layer of the eye, it could be a melanoma.

>> right. this affects 2500 people every year. more common in people with fair eyes and fair skin. typically the doctor sees a pigmentation or mole in the pigmented layer of the eye. this needs to be diagnosed early. it can metastasize quickly. >> the next leaky blood vessels. what's the link here? >> with diabetic rheetinopathy, it's a leading cause of blindness in this country. high blood sugars causes the vessels to be weak. they leak fluid and the eye doctor can see it. we recommend all diabetics get your eyes checked once a year. the longer you have diabetes the greater the likelihood of developing it. treated properly, you can prevent blindness. >> is it the color of it?

>> it's not. it's the lining of the vessel gets little openings in it. the fluid escapes the vessel into the back of the eye. >> okay. next is if your eyes are inflamed which a lot of people may experience and not allergies or other things but it could be a sign of auto immune disease. >> when the body attacks healthy cells it also can attack the eye causing symptoms. people get eye pain, redness of the eye and sensitivity to light. when the doctor looks in the back of the eye and sees characteristic changes, about 30 to 50% of the time it can be a sign of an auto immune disease like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. >> the next one, interior blisters that could indicate a condition called central serous retinopathyme oretinopat.

>> you have leakage of fluids. all it is caused by is stress. more common in men. but it's becoming more frequently seen in women. it resolves on its own if you reduce the stress. >> how do you see interior blisters? on the surface? >> no. the eye doctor will see a faint round patch in the back of the retina. >> interesting. finally, swollen blood vessels on the white portion of the eye. could be a sign of allergies. a lot of us experiencing them. >> a good reason to wear sunglasses. the pollen or allergens get into the eyes. and your eye wants to protect itself. it makes histamines, but the side effect is it cause it is eyes to be red, itchy and watery and irritated. >> we have been noticing the last couple of days. dr. peterson, thank you. >> thanks, natalie. >> up next, when to cut the cord financially with grown kids.

>> you have multiple generations. >> older parents coming in and a lot of cultures that happens. then there is the big one. the sense of entitlement. i grew up a certain way. i have a standard of living. i want to have that now in my 20s not realizing your parents struggled for a long time to give you that lifestyle. >> one of the good things you need to do is write out a contract with your kids. >> definitely. you need to set out expectations. if you haven't set them out early which you should do before they leave home in terms of how to get what they want you need to do it once they come home after college and say, what household duties are you going to have. who will take care of the car payments and are you going to pay rent? and they should. >> that's a sticking point -- rent. >> if they don't have a job how do they pay rent? maybe for six months they don't have to pay while they look for a job. they have to have a goal to get employment whether they are looking for a job, working or working part-time. it may not be in what they got

their degree in. it may not be perfect. working through a temp agency, finding? ing to do to support themselves or save to eventually get out from under your roof. >> when they are smaller kids if they don't do something there are consequences. what pa what happens with an adult child? >> there are consequences. they have no cell phone if they can't pay the bills or don't do household duties for you. you have to say, meet these expectations and we'll do this financially. >> we get calls from parents with kids living at home and the parents are dipping into their savings to help their kids. >> that's the worst part. you're jeopardizing your financial future to support your future. i want to give my kids everything but i also want to give them financial independence. by paying yourself, covering yourself financially, you are teaching them about financial independence. some things you have to do.

maybe they need to have a credit card. you make them an authorized user. don't cosign a loan for them. one thing you have to think about is making sure you don't jeopardize your own retirement because you're only one who can save for that. the other thing you have to do is make sure you insure yourself for the long term. you may think, my kid will take care of me when i'm older. if you're taking care of them, it's unlikely they will be able to. >> now you have adult kids living in the house. you almost throw back to my house, my rules. how do you deal with with that? >> it's difficult. one of the things you set out with expectations, it could be a written contract or a verbal contract. you need to make sure everyone understands what the rules are from the outset and what the consequences are if they don't live up to it. you don't want to make the kid think you don't love them. you show your love by teaching them financial independence.
