we're back now with more of "today" on a friday morning, march 16th, 2012. take a look at some of the unusual characters that have gathered in our plaza this morning. a lot of people in town for the big st. patrick's day parade tomorrow on 5th avenue. but we've got some of them with us this morning. that's just fine with us. i'm matt lauer along with savannah guthrie and al roker. ann is taking a couple of days off. we have weather here today that isn't in keeping with what we have had for a couple of days. we have nothing to complain about. >> i'll complain. it's a little drizzly now. just is saying. >> especially, i was saying, if you consider what happened in

and mexico for fun in the sun. >> let's go inside. natalie is on assignment. we have tamron hall at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. more than a hundred homes were damaged, many severely, when at least three suspected tornadoes touched down in southeast michigan thursday. the weather channel's mike seidel is in dexter, michigan, with more. good morning, mike. >> reporter: and good morning, tamron. we are here in the damage path of the twister that rolled through dexter yesterday afternoon. this house has been she aared o. piles of lumber and plywood. the jeep here may be drivable, but look at the house. this is a total loss of 13 in a subdivision the twister hit. if this is verified, this will be the earliest occurrence of a tornado in this county west of detroit on record.

as the emergency sirens were sounding -- >> i'm in the city limits of dexter and i have a large tornado on the ground. >> reporter: -- cameras captured a large funnel cloud that touched down. >> through the trees! >> reporter: as the twister approached people took cover. >> we took the customer and crew into the cooler. >> reporter: from above video captured the destruction in the small village of 4,000 people. homes ripped to shreds. some barely standing. >> our roof is gone, our bedroom. the house is leaking everywhere. >> reporter: the storm system brought pelting hail and after the storms roared through, the reality of the situation sunk in. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: people here already hard at work with the cleanup. the local laundromat wiped out, the owner trying to salvage what's left. >> trying to get it before the villains do. >> reporter: with the reminders of the storm around them. >> we live near the tracks but there was no train coming. when they say it sounds like a train they are not kidding.

>> reporter: despite the destruction there were no reported injuries. >> need a house? >> reporter: with some already looking on the brighter side. >> yeah. i have extra room now. my bike is in the neighbor's bush. i still have my lawnmower. i should be fine. >> reporter: the house behind me is also a total loss. an elderly man and two kids ran into the basement and avoided injury and loss of life. that's the saving grace here. early rning. more than an hour before all the sirens went off. also, most of the homes here are well constructed and many have basements. that's a good place to head in a tornado. again today, another day of 70-degree weather in michigan. more than 35 degrees above average for the date. >> incredible weather. mike, thank you so much. due gnu details are emerge -- new details about the soldier accused of gunning down afghan civilians. his attorney said his client

didn't want to go to afghanistan to serve a fourth combat tour. he saw his friend lose a leg in combat the day before the shooting spree. a military official said the individual was drinking and snapped before the massacre. this according to the new york times. women in arizona may have to prove they are using birth control for medical reasons, not for contraception in order to receive reimbursement from their work place health insurance. the bill also allows all employers and not just religious institutions to opt out of providing coverage for birth control. the american civil liberties union is battling the bill saying it would make it easier for women to be fired for using birth control for contraception is and would force women to reveal sensitive medical information. the newest apple ipad hits stores today and fans are lining up in nine countries. it boasts a faster processor, sharper screen.

analysts say more than one million could be sold today alone. with st. patrick's day almost upon us, a stunning amount of green has been put on display, donated for display at the north carolina museum of natural sciences. the emeralds include three uncut stones found last st. patrick's day eve on a north carolina farm. another became the biggest cut emerald ever produced in north america. if you're wondering, that's 64 carats. now it's six is minutes past the hour. back to al for a check of the weather. >> we have wet weather out west. another big storm system in the pacific northwest into central california. eventually makes its way into southern california. strong storms making their way through the mid mississippi river valley today. a slight risk of storms texas into oklahoma. beautiful through the southeast. showers and fog in the northeast. icy conditions in northern new england. the big weather story will be

here is farnoosh torabi. you get hit up every time at a check out. >> yeah. >> would you like to save 15%? who wouldn't? >> it's tempting. if you think you're getting a deal, get this. retailers cash in so much with the store cards. more than banks with traditional cards. >> just applying for it can affect your credit score. >> just like applying for any kind of credit card, an inquiry is placed on your credit report. but here we don't apply for one. we want two or three because the discounts are enticing. multiple inquiries can lower your score by 50 points t. damage stays for a year. >> also a lot of cards have high interest rates. >> very high. the average interest rate on a store branded card is 24% versus a traditional card is about 15%. if you are carrying a balance, any interest you're paying will

outweigh any initial discount. >> what about the credit limits? >> they are low. credit limits usually start off with about $500 or $1,000 versus a traditional card which can start you with $10,000 or $15,000. you ring up a couple of items and you're maxed out already on the card which is negative for your credit score. >> you want to save money. >> right. >> what are alternatives out there? >> there are a lot. one is to sign up for the store's retail loyalty program. if they issue you a card but it has nothing to do with your credit, essentially giving you the opportunity to get in on deals and steals ahead of time, earn points to save money in the long run. you could also show your student i.d. card or your teacher card. stores like banana republic, apple, maybe you will get a discount showing your card. and ask for a discount. sometimes saying, hey, can you cut me a deal? i tried to buy a ski coat and i

said, do you have any sales going on? he said, no, but do you have a aaa card? i did. i saved 10%. >> what about a store newsletter by e-mail. >> you want to be selective here. e-mails from your favorite retailers can help you save continually. learning about sales and deals before everybody else. >> is there a time when these store credit cards are beneficial? >> i'm going on the record to say i don't love the cards but if you're trying to re-establish credit when you have had a bad experience with debt and you really can't qualify for a traditional credit card, a store credit card is easier to qualify for. it could be what you need to bridge you over to a traditional card. also, if there is a store you shop at a lot and you spent $1,000 or more there a year maybe the discounts you could receive with the store cards will actually pay off. assuming you are paying off the balance every month. like target's card gives you a

your child uses. set rules. families who set rules, your child is far less likely to engage is risky behavior. third, start talking about internet safety early and keep talking. because that's the crux of good parenting, communication. >> first you say we need to tell the kids you're going to be monitoring what they do online. it's really not spying though there is sneakiness. >> if you tell your child, you will be monitored. as soon as you say it, the risk behavior goes down. if you set up what's called a walk-by rule which means if i happen to walk by and i notice you changing screens, covering up or being sneaky, i cover up. i'm responsible for your well-being and safety. >> because i'm the mom. >> yeah. >> we have to speak teen. there is internet lingo. i had never heard these. you say learn the slang abbreviations said online. >> p.o.s. is parent over shoulder. if you see the child going one,

two, three, four, five, that means a parent is reading the screen. >> p 911. >> mom or dad is in the room. >> it doesn't mean your kid will use it, but if you see your child using a term it means get the monitoring up more. >> you also say, because kids are on facebook and twitter and this is an extension. you say you have to be where your kids are. do you mean join the sites? >> if you want to monitor you have to have the account and pass word. periodically, we are going to make sure what you are posting is right. that doesn't mean you're going to post on your kid's facebook. that's a real downer for the teen. >> you make a distinction between asking for a password. you say that's okay. that's not a violation of their privacy? >> no. this is part of the rules and regulations of the house. how often you monitor and what -- don't tell them when or whe. that's a key that you have to keep going.

it just means that you're going to be able to monitor your child. >> you say the no-no is posting and embarrassing them and inserting yourself into their social life. don't do that. >> yeah. >> you say to keep internet access in places you can monitor. not in the bedroom. one of four kids have access in the bedroom. that's where most teens say they are getting into trouble, particularly at lights out. so texts keep coming in, sleep deprived kids come in. do a collect and drop box which means when lights are out, take the text, take the laptop. just give it back first thing in the morning. what you can do periodically is with your child watching say, let's do a quick check. doesn't mean you're going to read ifrg everything. if your child knows you are watching it increases safety levels online. >> you say to check their online profile. see what they are posting? >> no.
