right here in baltimore city. today, there are 39 murders. 34 is black on black crimes. there is no public outcry. >> hundreds converged here at city hall. it was organized by a number of activists and community groups including the naacp. >> senator ben mccurtain is calling for an end to interracial profiling and the threat he said it places on communities. in the wake of trayvon martin's death, he said there is a greater demand for justice. >> it is wrong and american. it is not a smart use of resources. it is of major statement. you cannot use racial profiling. >> the proposed legislation would end profiling and there would be action against those

who still do it. >> the plan to ask the justice department to investigate the shooting of trayvon martin. this announcement by the black caucus. they are endorsing -- they are requiring cultural sensitivity for the maryland police department and never did watch groups. kavas members called for efforts to improve cultural covenants and a review of self-defense lobs. they are drafting a letter to the justice department asking the agency to review standard crown loss in 21 states that would allow deadly force if someone feels threatened. rallies in florida. it is all on the website, wbaltv.com. a battle between anne arundel county and its top cop comes to a head. he did testify about his alleged involvement in the misconduct

case involving john leopold. we are live in annapolis with more. >> there is a much leading this moment. it is what he did not say that caused the most reaction. police -- the police chief did not say much as he was walking into the meeting he had been subpoenaed for. he was facing the threat of being issued a second subpoena after not showing up to last week's meeting. council members wanted to find out more about his involvement in the case of john leopold who has been indicted on charges of misconduct in office, misuse of police officers who were part of the security detail and ordering officers to keep files on his political opponents. after being sworn in, he

addressed council members. >> i would be breaking the law which i have been serving for 25 years. i do not want to break the law. i respectfully decline to answer questions. >> he said by commenting on the case it would jeopardize the grand jury's investigation. that testimony did not sit well. >> i wanted the chief to reassure the public that everything was copacetic in the police department. >> the notion that the citizens have to wait for the end of the criminal proceedings against the county executive before getting answers about what their police department is doing is ridiculous. >> councilmember said they may try to get a court order to force him to tell his story. the case goes to trial in september.

>> baltimore city police made nearly three dozen arrests over the weekend. they focused on warrants and people with a history of robbery. they're also planning to meet with the community to make them aware of how they can help. >> not only are we going to be attacking this from an important perspective and holding people accountable, we will do some public education and meeting with community groups trying to educate them on how to be a better witness. god forbid you are involved in a situation like this. what not to do if you are confronted by a gunman. >> the reason for the increase is not clear. they do mention washington, d.c. has dealt with robbery involving smart phones. >> a 26-year-old man was shot and killed in southeast baltimore. on eido avenue.

the victim opened his front door after hearing the doorbell rang and as he walked out to the sport, he was shot several times. the victim was taken to the hospital where he died. no word on a possible motive for -- or a suspect. an assault investigation is underway. after a 16-year-old was reportedly attacked by a 21- year-old co-worker at a mcdonald's. she was punched in the head repeatedly after midnight saturday. on 10 would avenue -- wood avenue. a transgendered woman was beaten at that same location. >> the retrial of twin brothers accused of setting a pit bull on fire in baltimore city. travers and tremaine johnson were convicted. that case drew outrage and has helped spark calls for tougher

>> the wife of the army sergeant accused of afghan village massacre is finally speaking out. she believes her husband is incapable of the killings. she said she is convinced of his innocence because most of the victims were afghan children. >> he is accused of killing nine children. innocent children. >> i have no idea what happened. he would not -- he loves children and he would not do that. it is heartbreaking. >> she added she has spoken to her husband by phone but they did not talk about the incident.

there is new evidence he may have returned to the base after the first attack to continue the killings. nbc and the u.s. chamber of commerce have joined forces to help unemployed veterans get back to work. through an initiative more than 400 job vehrs will be held in several cities across the country to help veterans and their spouses find work. officials say veterans bring experience to the workplace including the ability to adapt. this was the case with a fighter pilot turned journalist. >> when i realized some -- so many people were talking about the military and what we're doing. it is a different perspective. >> the hiring our heroes initiative was launched a year ago. >> with all the unbelievable warm weather, many flowers and fruit trees are blooming. tonight it will get close to or
