numerous holes in the roof of the house. we're going to switch gears and tell you about a school bus accident that happened just before 4:00. we have video to show you of that accident where from what we understand, the school bus had stopped for a railroad crossing, and a car ended up renting that bus. we understand one person was taken to franklin square hospital. we are not sure about injuries. we do not believe the students on the bus were injured, but we are still trying to get more information from county police. >> thank you. our big story tonight -- they are accused of setting a deadline fire in a disturbing case of animal abuse back in 2009. >> tonight, the brothers are back on trial for the death of a dog later named the knicks' by animal rescue workers. >> unfortunately, we are talking more delays this evening. jury selection was supposed to begin this morning.

instead, it was delayed until 2:00 this afternoon and continues at this hour and will probably go on for at least another hour. the reason it is taking so long is because of all the media coverage that this case received the first time around. jury selection finally. wednesday afternoon in the retrial of these twin brothers. judge brown not taking any chances, calling about 80 potential jurors to whittle down to a jury of 12 with three alternates. usually, only 30 or 40 potential jurors are called to a given case, but given the publicity surrounding the first trial of the johnson brothers, a high amount of jurors have the potential to be dismissed. most may remember it was back in late may of 2009 when prosecutors say the brothers, the 17 years old, said a two- year-old pit bull, later named phoenix, on fire with an unknown flammable liquid. phoenix would die several days later at a pennsylvania animal

hospital. the twins were put on trial in february 2011. prosecutors relied on crime camera surveillance video to identify the twins as well as kate conversations. in the end, a mistrial was declared because according to an unnamed juror, there was one juror who would not change her vote, and the jury was hung on an 11-1 vote. on top of that, it has been a long road getting to a retrial, which was supposed to take place in may 2011, then november, then december. still, animal advocates who have been in court following every move are looking toward the positive, no matter what the potential verdict will be. >> we need to see this through to a logical conclusion, whatever that may happen to be, and we're grateful for the things that have happened over these three years that have moved in a positive direction. >> jury selection will continue at least for another hour. if a jury is not selected this evening, things will continue tomorrow morning with opening

statements to follow. we are live outside a mitchell court house tonight. >> thank you. this was the scene of the past few hours in northwest baltimore where a line of thunderstorms rolled through and is now headed south. let's take a quick check in with our chief meteorologist. >> emphasis there on a quick. the system moving by very quickly, a fast-moving cold front that is going to drop these temperatures a little bit. this was another unseasonably mild day. you can see showers have passed us, that the strain in parts of st. mary's county, southern charles. isolated showers moving through cambridge. north and west, things are beginning to dry out nicely. strongest storms in western virginia. severe thunderstorm watch with the potential for gusty winds and hail associated with those mountain storms, but to the north and west of us, a clearing trend and indications that cooler weather will be filtering in. details coming up in a few minutes. >> accused of murdering his

sister's husband at a bar, a baltimore county man will go to prison for 60 years. robert bonner learned his 8 this morning in baltimore county circuit court. he pleaded guilty to shooting the martin eight times as he left the house in after work. further investigation revealed the murder had been orchestrated by a margin as in life. she also pleaded guilty earlier this year. -- the murder had been orchestrated by martin's wife. >> two men are charged with these four incidents throughout the city, and we're told more charges could be on the way. police tell us the men would go into stores, and maize the employees, and make off with the goods. some of the stores it include a radio shack on sinclair land, to boost mobile store, and a store. police are looking -- baltimore police are looking into whether the paris behind a similar spree in the district.

authorities tell us a white male around 6 feet tall with dark hair passed a note to a person at the cash register implying he had a weapon. he was able to make of with an undisclosed amount of money. anyone with information, contact metro crime stoppers at 1-866-7-lock up. >> for the first time in a long time, a third presidential candidate is making a stop here in maryland. within the next few hours, people will start gathering with a town hall meeting with ron paul. supporters have already started to gather. >> we are set up outside of the coliseum, and about 100 people are already in line waiting to see the texas congressman. he does not show up until about 7:00, but they have been in line for several hours now. according to the campaign

officials, the university of maryland is one of the strongest supporters in the country, and college kids out here have recruited 2000 supporters for the campaign. it is hard to tell how many students -- how many people in line our students, but i spoke to a handful of supporters, all of whom drilled at least an hour to be here and say that ron paul is the only candidate who speaks to them on a personal level, and they are excited to hear what he has to say this evening. >> the economy is major, but i think as well, it is very tight in together with a lot of of the things like foreign-policy and relating to for some major change that needs to take place and has to take place. >> all right, you are taking a live look at the crowd that has started to gather here in college park. there is a mixture of people in the crowd, a mixture of middle- aged folks. you have a college-aged-looking students out here. again, the town hall starts at

7:00. it is open to the public, and we expect it to run for about an hour or so. we are live in college park at the university of maryland. >> thank you. as we first told you last night, some baltimore city schools could be closed this summer. part of the mayor's budget proposal. barry is live with more on the mayor's reason to not open some pools. >> two issues according to the mayor -- budget woes and shrinking revenue. she says it all adds up to financial cuts and prioritizing needs. >> baltimore city residents could have limited locations to swim and splash around the summer. while mayor blake was a plan to cut costs will allow the park and five other large city " to operate, seven of the city's 13 walk-two polls may not open. >> just as families have to do when they are facing a shortfall just as businesses and

other governments have to do, you have to choose your priorities and prioritize your spending on things back -- that matter most. >> so far, no listing on which schools to remain close, but the decision could impact locations like the jackson walked to pull and the 4900 block of park heights avenue. while recreation is important, the major sites the $40 million budget deficit in the city. she is also focusing on crime reduction efforts, improving schools, and making sure neighborhoods are strong and safe. >> the deficit is larger than the entire budget. so what do you do? we look for ways that even in tough times, we can focus our resources where they will have the biggest impact. >> while her budget calls for $38 million to go to recreation and parks, it cuts full funding by about 35,000. the city council president and some council members what all the pools open this summer.

today as three days of oral arguments wrapped up. >> it is about freedom of choice. >> the big debate continued outside. inside, the nine justices focused on a narrow issue -- if they throw out the mandate that requires americans to buy health insurance, should they throw out all of obama health care? the guarantee that everyone is covered, no lifetime dollar limit, the free birth control. the lawyer for states opposed to obamacare argue yes. >> if the individual mandate is unconstitutional, then the rest of the act cannot stand. >> conservatives agree there is no way to figure of what is constitutional. >> is this not totally unrealistic that we are going to go through this enormous bill item by item? >> should be easy for justice scalia's clerks. >> i do not care whether it is easy for my clerks. i care whether it is easy for

>> the jetblue air wis captain who sprinted through the cab and screaming about terrorists has been charged with interfering with a flight crew. we're learning about the tense moments on board from the passengers who witnessed it. >> and frantic struggle at 35,000 feet. >> as a passenger and in the first few rows, it was surreal to see this happening. >> the pilot of a jetblue flight from new york to las vegas out of control. >> he came running down the aisle and was screaming, "afghanistan. there is a bomb. i got to get in the cockpit." then he started banging on the cockpit door. >> that is when at least a half- dozen passengers jumped in. >> i ran up, and we were face to face, me and the captain. wrestled a little bit. i got him turnaround, and then other passengers jumped on.

we all got on top of him. >> it apparently started inside the cockpit with the captain beer from the flight plan to radically flipping switches and calling on the radio. his concern co-pilot somehow persuaded him to take a bathroom break, and when he did, an off- duty captain on the flight took his place and what the flight deck door. >> the co-pilot is the hero year. he was able to persuade the captain out of the cockpit. that is what completely averted what could have been a tragedy yesterday. >> the co-pilot then diverted the plane to amarillo, texas. >> jetblue 191 emergency. we're going to need authorities and medical personnel on the airplane. >> the captain was removed in the streets. he remains in fbi custody and is being treated by doctors. 13 hours after takeoff, the flight did make it to vegas. >> could not be better. back on the ground, happy. i don't know -- just happy to be on the ground. >> after a bizarre and

frightening flight. >> in tonight's medical alert, this next item may turn out to be an amazing breakthrough -- a blood test that can detect breast cancer recurrence of to a year earlier than current tests. experts at purdue university study blood samples from breast cancer survivors and identified markers that appear to be linked to an increased risk for recurrence. studies show that the test was able to detect twice as many recurrence is compared to those tests used today and was also able to spot disease about a year earlier. the test is still under study, researchers hope it will be available later this year. the new gel nails manicured is incredibly popular -- you probably know someone who has them -- but a new study shows the process could be hazardous to your health. it requires four or five coats of college, each coat dry under a uv light, but according to once again surgeon, uv let's use

the same light source is predominantly used in tanning beds, and the light source is known to be carcinogenic. repeated exposure could cause an increased risk of skin cancer. am i have had -- a seen cases of women who had skin cancer on the back of the hand could have used these devices. i cannot say it caused them. just a correlation. >> uv light can also cause the skin to prematurely aged. one doctor says if women are going to get gel manicures, use a broad spectrum sunscreen on your hands and cut the exposure time as much as possible. >> 80 doppler picking up but a lot of showers and thunderstorms track across the area. this theory i looked three hours ago as a line of showers moved through northern central maryland. it has been steadily working its

way toward the north and east. the trend should continue through the evening as the line of storms moves off to our south and east and away from our region. still, there is still a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for areas in the mountains of west virginia into western virginia. those locations of to our south and west, the potential is there for a thunderstorm or maybe even some hail. storms are developing as a cold front and counters -- encounters some unseasonably mild air. a cool front coming in from the north and west it's that mild air and triggers a couple of scattered thunderstorms, but for our region, most of that is now out of here. we will see clearing skies. it will be breezy overnight. sun set at 7:27. late tonight, winds will start dusting of 25 or 30 miles an hour as cool air comes in behind the front. bright white clouds go but grow along the front into parts of kentucky, and behind it, temperatures do not cooled dramatically, but there is gusty

wind behind the system. up in international falls, that is only 40 degrees. tomorrow should be while not dramatically at least noticeably cooler than today. the good news is will get a lot of sunshine in here. when may be gusting over 30 miles an hour, but it will be a nice, sunny thursday. by friday, the next system approaching us rapidly with increasing cloudiness. by late friday night going into about midnight early morning saturday, shower start to push in. look how cold it is. this system might actually bring some late-season snow to parts of new york state and southern new england. some of those showers may linger into early saturday morning. tomorrow, sunny, windy, cooler day. with wind gusting to 30 miles an hour. highs of 5763. on the bay, small craft advisory. -- highs of 57 to 63. very isolated showers. it could even be mixed with a little wet snow early in the morning in the highest

>> maryland's house of delegates is making measures to change a slots bill that was passed yesterday. >> it allows a 6 casino to be located in georgia county and let's current operators keep more revenue and opens the door to table games. our reporter is live inside with more on that. >> it appears a majority of the house and senate approval of table games. what the house finds troubling is adding a sixth gambling location before the other five are fully operational. do not bet on the house. according to some delegates, thoughts on expanding gaming and adding prince george's county as a six gambling location are iffy. >> we will look at each piece of the bill and see what we can keep, what we cannot, and what we need to add. >> the bill allows a casino to operate within four miles of the

intersection of st. barnabas road and bach but the exact location is being debated. there is now talk about using the grounds of the old capital center complex. prince george's county house delegation is split. >> it is an industry we have created just so we can tax it, and i do not think that is a good idea. >> there is strong opposition from a company which will open slots parlor in june. a prince george's location would be a direct competitor, and so with the proposed casino in baltimore city. as a sweetener, the bill lets slots operators keep as much as 40% of the proceeds. currently, the split is 33%. the legislation also expand gaming, allowing table games like blackjack and roulette. >> i think there should be a lot of resistance because there is more resistance to gambling. there are more questions about opening a new venue when we already have the established ones. >> the bill also allows the same company to run two casinos in

maryland. current law mandates one licensed only for each operator. and ate law requires voter permission to expand gaming. opponents are disappointed that a provision demanded by the prince george's county council had to be stricken. >> the attorney general said we could not do it just for prince george's county, so that is a problem. >> coming up to 6:00, some suggest that marilyn take a look at other states where casinos are in close proximity -- some suggest that maryland take a look at other states. democrat has been gathering for several hours in college park. >> that is where presidential candidate ron paul is set to speak in the next 90 minutes. live look straight ahead, but first -- >> the things i could do with that kind of money. i've never seen the jackpot that big in my life. >> we all feel that way, right? a mad dash for the megamillions as people stocked up with plans

for a town hall meeting expected to last about an hour. like most town halls, it is open to the public, and he will be taking questions from the crowd. jury selection began today in the retrial of twin brothers accused of setting a table on fire back in 2009. the johnson brothers are charged with animal cruelty in the death of a dog that care givers later named phoenix. the first trial for the twins ended in a hung jury in 2011 after a single juror refused to change their vote. and the search is on tonight for a man behind a string of recent burglaries in baltimore county. his dangerous m o -- overnight break-in's while residents are home. detectives tell us they're not sure if the man is on, but he has been ripping three dressers, taking jury, and in at least one case, prescription drugs. anyone with information should contact crime stoppers at 1-866- 7-locked up. >> mitt romney expected to get the endorsement of its former president while newt gingrich is scaling down the size of his

>> governor malleus teaming up with school principals across the country to end childhood hunger. the program provides funding and technical assistance to schools so they can include breakfast in the classroom and grab and go meals, so breakfast becomes part of the students instructional time. studies show children who eat breakfast and to perform better on standardized tests and make fewer mistakes in math. the kids who receive a free or reduced price lunch last year, only about half received free or reduced price breakfast. brown also in annapolis, a push for cleaner water in waterways across the state. 100 demonstrators went to lawyers mall this morning armed with beach gear and recreational equipment as well as personal photos to show what clean water

means to them. scientists are expressing a concern over a decline in underwater grasses, which is a key habitat for many species. numbers show grasses decline more than 20% last year alone. the drop was blamed largely on heavy rains and snow melt that sent tons of mud and debris into the bay. those losses and a grasses cover just dropped to its lowest point since 2006, now at historically low levels. in addition to providing habitat for crabs and striped bass, they improve water clarity, and oxygen, and prevent erosion. >> covering the nation tonight, a wave of protests regarding the killing trayvon martin takes an ugly twist in miami. take a look at this video and data walgreen's drugstore. 100 demonstrating students rushed the doors, invaded the aisles, knocking over merchandise and breaking shelves and displays in the past. a school principal could be seen helping to ease the students out. total damage estimate -- about

of thunderstorms. >> in tonight's consumer look, here's hoping it is a better day for united airlines and passengers. tuesday, passengers were having trouble getting a reservations agent on the phone to fix ticketing problems and other glitches like i balances on their frequent-flier accounts. the problems remain more than three weeks after a computer switchover that was supposed to make traveling easier following the merger with continental. united says it has employees working overtime and has added 600 extra call center workers to help with bones as they work to figure out the computer glitches. the transportation security administration being scrutinized and that after an airport report shows that some cold water scandals were placed in terminals where they really are used -- some full body scanners were placed in terminals where they really are used. the machines cost $250,000 apiece, and the tsa has 640 of them.
