morning, two empty freight trains collided as they were moving to maneuver on dorsey run road. five cars derailed, bringing down several telephone wires. at this hour, there's no reports of any power outages or disruption in phone service. and city officers respond to a stabbing in west baltimore. just about 12:30 last night, police arrived to investigate the stabbing of a 50-year-old woman. there's no word this morning on her condition. and d.n.a. evidence recovered hundreds of miles away has helped convict a man for rape in frederick eight years ago. a jury has convicted 28-year-old nareed walker for the 2004 attack of a woman under a downtown frederick bridge. police had no suspect in that case until walker submitted d.n.a. to police in tennessee in 2010 after being arrested there on robbery charges. now he faces the possibility of life in prison when he's sentenced on may 8. >> our big story this morning, big dreams of a big jackpot, as mega millions grows to a record

smashing half a billion dollars. 11 news reporter nadia ramdass is live in northwest baltimore with more on the jackpot fever. nadia, you don't have your ticket yet, do you? >> no, i am planning to get that right after work, trust me on that one. and you know what? the excitement is so contagious. can you blame me? with so many people around the country buying tickets, the jackpot could climb even higher than $540 million. and with all this excitement, it's no surprise that mega millions has reached a fever pitch. now, the soda pop shop in catonsville has already sold about 1,300 tickets this week alone. the mega millions jackpot is worth an estimated $540 million. after taxes, when everything is said and done, the winner could walk away with a lump sum of nearly $260 million, or a yearly payment of $13.8 million. but the odds of getting your hands on all of this money are very, very slim. officials say the odds of anyone winning the mega

watercooler@wbaltv.com. >> after nearly a year postponement and delays, a jury of nine women and three men has been seated in the retrial of twin brothers accused of setting a pit bull on fire. prosecutors say evidence, including video and witness accounts, shows travers and tremayne johnson were behind the death of a dog, later named phoenix. defense attorneys say the city botched the crime scene from the very beginning and succumbed to public pressure. the brothers' first trial ended in a hung jury. hundreds of people turned out on the campus of morgan state university in solidarity for slain florida teen, trayvon martin. many students dressed in hooded sweatshirts, like that worn of martin when he was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch patrolman last month. last knit's rally was the latest in a nationwide series of protests calling for justice. >> and all of you are proud students of morgan, and that's why i'm here to send a message

that we are not suspicious. >> and one month later, police have yet to decide if they'll file charges against george zimmerman. he's the patrolman who claimed self-defense when he shot and killed martin. >> a toddler is recovering at johns hopkins children's center after being struck by an unmarked city police car. sky team 11 was over the scene around 3:00 thursday afternoon near the intersection of south highland avenue and leverton avenue in highlandtown. police say it appears the child ran into the street between two cars and was then hit by the police car. the child's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. in east baltimore, fire investigators continue to search for whatever set off a two-alarm blaze. it broke out just before 7:00 yesterday morning along the 400 block of east biddle street. crews also had to battle the wind to get the fire under control t. may have caused the fire to spread. no reports of any injuries.

delegates has gin preliminary approval to legislation clearing the way for a wind turbine farm off the coast of ocean city. the bill requires consumers to pay $1.50 surcharge each month to help subsidize the development of wind energy. the monthly fee for commercial and industrial customers was cut back to 1.5% and won't go into effect until 2017. a final vote on the bill is set for later this afternoon. also under consideration today -- a house bill that would forbid employers from forcing employees or job applicants to give up their pass words to email or any social media. the bill sponsors say an employer can still search online for information about a worker, including looking at a facebook wall or twitter page, but no one should be forced to offer up their privacy. the senate has already passed a similar bill. >> time right now is 6:10, 37 degrees here on tv hill. coming up -- we could be paying the price for getting rid of the pink slime. details in this morning's bloomberg business report.

>> welcome back. 6:14, 45 degrees downtown. things are pretty quiet right now, but wive a little rain in the forecast for this evening and tonight. up until that time, the weather should be just fine. it is a cold start, but we'll make it into the upper 50's this afternoon. high pressure in new england, and that's keeping things quiet for now. but there's an area of low pressure in the mississippi valley racing here. you can already see the high, thin clouds. the skies look clear for most of the night, and that's what allowed the temperatures to drop. as we head through the morning and afternoon, you notice the clouds thickening up. the rain isn't far behind. we've got showers across ohio, west virginia, western pennsylvania. most of this is going to fall apart, at least the leading

edge of it. you can see the trend for that rain to start moving east there, and again, it should arrive sometime this evening, probably after 6:00. i think we'll stay dry up until that point. kind of chilly in the northwest suburbs. 32 in frederick. if you're watching us up that way, you guys might have a little frost on the windshield to start the day. 37 at the airport. it's 42 degrees in rock hall. the forecast for today, crousing clouds, a chance for rain showers this evening, but dry during the day. high temperatures in the upper 50's to around 60 degrees. and for a change, that's right around average for this time of the year. we haven't said that for a while. average high is 59. record for today, 89, set back in 1998. overnight tonight, mostly cloudy skies. i think some of that rain will catch up to us during the overnight period. temperatures will drop back into the 40's. seven-day forecast stacks up like this -- as we go into saturday, we'll see a chance for rain showers, but i think it will be mostly in the morning. if you have outdoor plans on saturday, try to do it as late in the day as you can. 58 for a high temperature. even if you get into the rain

top stories this morning -- a pennsylvania judge has delayed the child sex abuse trial of former penn state assistance coach, jerry sandusky. he cited various contingencies pushing the date to early june. sandusky faces 5 counts of child -- faces 52 counts of child sex abuse. a fire in southern virginia consumers a furniture plant. nearly 100 firefighters were called. at one point, embers across the river endangering several nearby homes. one firefighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion. investigators don't suspect foul play, and the cause of that fire is still under investigation. you're not going to want to miss this video. from dudeperfect.com comes a shot to literally top all shots. for their 100th video, the guys went all out, riding high in a goodyear blimp. you see there, oh, swish! they're going to do it.

coming out with its own tablet. a government official says the pink slime controversy could lead to higher beef prices for you. 11 news reporter jane king has those stories in this morning's bloomberg business report. >> good morning. consumers may soon be paying for more beef. texas governor rick pr i says that's -- rick perry says that's because of misinformation. he says retailers who stop using the product, coupled with a record drought in texas, which is impacting the size of the cattle herd, is a formula for a fairly significant price hike in beef. meantime, google trying to jump into the tablet market. "the wall street journal" says they'll sell co-branded tablets directly to consumers. sources tell "the journal" it may sell devices from a variety of manufacturers, as google won't actually make the devices. one thing we're keeping an eye on today, a report on consumer spending. the economy is in recovery mode. economists forecast it will show a rise in spending in february, especially for cars as the job market improves. and yesterday, mixed close for markets. some healthcare stocks

finishing higher on speculation the supreme court will overturn aspects of the affordable care act. and the bloomberg maryland index lower on losses for under armour. the three stooges invading six flags america. in a partnership with 20th century fox, it's promoting the upcoming film, "three stooges" with an april stooge day on april 1. six flags offering a discount for a package of three general admission tickets for $99. you can only buy it online. at the new york stock exchange, i'm bloomberg's jane king for wbal-tv 11 news. >> in this morning's education alert -- the number of students enrolled in maryland colleges is expected to jump 20% over the next decade. what does that mean for maryland students? the board of regents says schools will be forced to raise the price of things like meals and parking and dormitories. students say they already pay enough, and they'll move off campus just to save money. but the regents say it's the cost of doing business. >> every year, it costs more to

empty handed. matthew miller hoped to reduce his conviction in the 2007 death of 18-year-old kevin ryan to probation before judgment. but because of the nature of the offense and strong opposition from the victim's family and the community, the judge refused miller's request. >> i felt sorry, and i accept his apology. i just think, in this case, he let his lawyer lead him too quickly to this motion and try to force it. and i think you can forgive people over time, but it's hard to do when it's jammed down your throat. >> the probation before judgment would have erased miller's felony conviction and expanded his employment opportunities. a fight over trees has turned deadly in allegheny county. state police say an ongoing dispute over property lines reached a boiling point between alexander and dennis on thursday night. this after three trees were cut

down and put no trespassing signs on the stump. when he was confronted, police say he shot him in the chest. he died of his injuries. he's charged with manslaughter and is being held on $300,000 bail. >> it's been a long day already for the men and women in the maryland national guard's 175th operations and maintenance wing. that's because, just after midnight, about 300 of the unit packed up for deployment to afghanistan. they'll arrive at bagram air base in afghanistan, serve as ground support staff. it's never a routine deployment, as the master sergeant will tell you. this is his 10th time going overseas. >> this is not my first rodeo, so i know more or less what this expect. you always have the little sense of anything could happen, but we've got a bunch of good guys here that we know will take care of everything, get things done, get things done right and safely.

>> welcome back to 11 news today. it's 6:44. for the first time since taking office, governor martin o'malley has commuted the life prison sentences for two inmates. mark grant was sentenced to life when he was 14 for a fatal shooting during a robbery. he's had his sentence commuted to a term of life with ought bull 45 years suspended. and tamarus settles was convicted of felony murder in the slaying of a man that her boyfriend killed during a robbery back in 1984.

and after nearly a year of postponement and delays, a jury of nine women and three men has been seated in the retrial of twin brothers accused of setting a pit bull on fire. prosecutors say evidence, including video surveillance and witness accounts, shows travers and tremayne johnson were behind the death of a dog who was later named phoenix. according to the defense, attorneys say the city botched the crime scene from the very beginning and succumbed to public pressure. the brothers' first trial ended in a hung jury. and city officers respond to a stabbing in west baltimore, just about 12:30 last night. police arrived at the corner of north longwood street to investigate the stabbing of a 50-year-old woman. no word on her condition. >> all right, let's check what's going on on the roads. several accidents since we checked in with you last. there are some in the area of route 24 and edgewood road. that's the latest coming in to us, and police are arriving on the scene there as we speak. also, southbound 95 right at

joins us live from northwest baltimore with that story. hey, nadia >> hey, jennifer, and excitement is contagious. with so many people around the country buying tickets, the jackpot could climb even higher than the $540 million. and with all this excitement, it's no surprise mega millions has reached a fever pitch. now, the soda pop shop in catonsville has already sold about,1,300 tickets this week alone. the jackpot is worth an estimated $540 million. after taxes, the winner could walk away with a lump sum of nearly $260 million, or a yearly payment of $13.8 million. but the odds of getting your hands on this money are very slim. officials say the odds of anyone winning the mega millions jackpot is one in 176 million. experts say you have a greater chance of having a shark bite you or becoming a sanity than winning the jackpot. now, time is of the essence. ticket sales end tonight at 10:45, and the drawing is
