>> students were taken out of school in handcuffs and charged with assault. authorities remain tight-lipped because the kids are eight and nine. this all started at the playground in southwest baltimore. a group of kids reportedly attacked another group with sticks. in retaliation, one child had was forcibly held under water. another was forced to lie down on a railroad track. 10 days later, the children were taken out of the elementary school for a rest. 11 news has received a statement from the american civil liberties union calling the way police handled the situation appalling and deeply troubling. sheldon dutes will have a live report at 6:00. >> baltimore city police are investigating a sexual assault that have been inside a north baltimore home last night. barry sims is live at police headquarters in downtown baltimore with more. >> police say the victim gave as

much to the description as she could. she says the suspect wore a mask to cover his face and head golf gloves on his hands. baltimore city police are looking for a man who concealed his identity, went into a home, and sexually assaulted and 18- year-old female in a bedroom. >> the suspect had a mask. we do not have a great description. we're asking anyone in the community or neighborhood who may have been out last night if you saw an individual acting suspicious or running from the area to please contact detectives. >> people tell 11 news they are worried. >> it is not get at all. i am afraid. i have young kids. i do not want anybody to come in on me and my children. >> police are not sure how the suspect got into the house. the victim was able to tell detective some information. >> the only description we have

officer michael gordon is on routine administrative leave after a shooting on tuesday morning that left one man dead. police said they were forced to shoot jackson after he emerged from his home waving a knife. officer gordon joined the north district control unit in 2005. >> new developments tonight in the investigation into pending criminal charges against john leopold. deputy chief davis will appear monday night to answer questions as part of the inquiry into the alleged misuse of security detail for personal and political purposes. his appearance will come one week after the police chief testified under oath in response to a subpoena. he refused to answer most questions citing a vice from his attorney. >> many areas have stayed under clouds all day long. that has kept the temperature down. in some spots, the son has

ro --y tailor. >> the fda will require tobacco companies to report the levels of dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes and other products. is the first sign tobacco companies will need to report the quantities of chemicals associated with cancer and other health problems. some of the chemicals include ammonia, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. fda officials say companies will have to display the information by next april. pink slime is the ammonia filler used in ground beef products. one of the largest manufacturers recently opened its doors to news cameras and governors. nutritionists point out the product has been used in ground beef for two decades and has not been shown to cause health problems. >> the introduction of the

>> there has always been a concern in maryland about the large number of students who start college but do not finish. a new report shows the trend is starting to change. tim tooten joins us with more on the story. >> this the board of regents report on retention and graduation rates. it covers a tenure. . the report was based on first- year college student. it tracks how long they stayed in college before dropping out. this is one of the does state schools where the retention numbers have improved. that is good news for the second year's student on the baltimore

campus. >> it shows it is not as bad as everyone is saying. it is doing what it needs to do to become a great school in baltimore. >> the second year retention rate for compton was up 54%. 68% for the university of maryland eastern shore and 72% for bowie state. retention numbers were up for the university of baltimore, umbc. they say they have been targeting students with summer and mentoring programs. >> we have seen positive changes. would like to applaud ourselves, but we know there is much work to do. we will continue those efforts. >> the board of regents said this study of progress will help to improve graduation rates and place students on a level playing field. >> it is part of the effort to close the achievement gap. it is leading to greater productivity. it is a hopeful sign we're
