this year began. his father passed away at the end of last year. he changed caddies, changed sports psychologists. needed to figure out a way to get his swing back. he has come into 2012 with a renewed confidence. and this will be bogey putt coming back for davis. >> falls him back to 12 under but he's in a tie for fourth and big fedex cup points for brian davis as well. so that clears the way for the final group. mahan, a par 4 will win his second pga tour title of the year. >> let's take a look at where his eyes are aiming, roger. you got this under control? >> he's got 198 left to the hole, johnny. he's got to be looking right of the hole. he's got 7 iron out, downwind, just try to hit something solid and into the center of the green. >> there it is right there. that's a pressure shot, but not
6:01 pm
that tough to get it right of the hole 20 feet. >> i think he likes it. >> oh, that's nice. >> that's trusting your swing, john. >> i bet he hit that within a foot of where he was aiming. that was a pure shot. >> well, he liked this one. >> absolutely awesome. >> they will be on their way to augusta, hopefully with a victory. now oosthuizen. is there a little miracle here for oosthuizen. >> he'd have to hole it and hope hunter doesn't make it. and not his best, but we've seen a lot worse than that. it's been a great run of tournaments for us, hey, dan?
6:02 pm
we've had hunter winning six weeks ago. >> a spectacular swing, johnny. in all of the years we've been doing this, i cannot think of a better list of quality winners, dramatic golf. of course hunter started it off at the accenture match play championship and then you had tiger and rory and luke donald. >> justin rose. >> and justin rose winning in miami so it really sets the table for the first major of the year as well. >> you know, the tour has been so blessed this year with unreal finishes on sunday. >> comebacks. >> yeah, comebacks. you had the stanley story. and of course at san diego and winning the next week at phoenix, so all in all golf is very blessed. even though tiger has just won once, you know, the nice thing about golf, it just keeps on ticking. >> speaking of that win for hunter out in arizona, he climbed to his highest ranking in the world at number nine. he is projected to be number four in the world if he wins this tournament. and that would make him the highest ranked american in the world golf rankings.
6:03 pm
that is a huge honor. that's a huge spot when you think of all the americans in recent years who have ascended to that position. hunter mahan would surpass steve stricker in that category. >> i said about an hour and a half ago, this is the kind of win he needs. he's won by shooting spectacular rounds. this one he did it the old-fashioned way where he had to hang in there. let's take this last shot. hits a clutch drive and really released his right side there. hit it exactly where he was aiming, flushed it, did exactly what sean foley told him to do. keep the club swing together, arms sort of in sync and hit it flush and that will help you get that little baby draw. just fantastic. you see how much that means to him to hit those two shots he just hit. >> and of course it would be another win for a sean foley pupil. i asked sean this morning, you know, get away from the golf. what has really turned around hunter mahan's game.
6:04 pm
he said you know what it's been? it's been not adding value to the shot. in other words, he really used to think of himself, you know, by his golf. how it went on the golf course. he's gotten away from that. talked about how he's gotten married. i don't know if there's been a guy that's matured more out here on this big stage than hunter mahan, who was really a little shy and i don't know that he could handle being in the spotlight that he is right now. i think he's handling it good right now. >> if he gets good at playing pressure golf, he's got the tee to green game to challenge tiger or anybody. the way he drives the ball is off the charts. he hits a lot of greens in regulations and is putting lights out. he hasn't had a three-putt in, what, 102 holes? >> oosthuizen will putt first. we saw a little bit of an example today, roger, about how good a player louis oosthuizen
6:05 pm
is. he won that british open at st. andrews by seven shots, the largest margin of victory in that british open championship since tiger woods won by eight book in 2000. but roger, i know how impressed you've been with his game. it didn't go well at the start of the nine, but this guy is as solid as they get. >> at the end of all of this i think he's going to be scratching his head saying are you kidding me? i got within a couple of shots of winning this thing and everything that could go wrong did go wrong. >> it goes left and then flattens out. if he makes this -- >> he's two clear of fourth place, so he's going to get third place probably. >> oosthuizen says ever since the friday of the transitions, i have felt a newfound confidence. we've seen it. >> well, the thing that hurts tonight, he said, man, i started 17 under on a perfect day with a perfectly manicured golf course
6:06 pm
and i couldn't get it done. that's going to hurt. >> two putt as way for hunter mahan to become the first multiple winner on the pga tour this year. >> it just goes a little right? >> it goes a little right. break is not the issue, it's just getting it the right speed. get it dead weight speed and tap it in. >> he's been so good at distance control which shows up on the 101 holes without a three-putt. but when you have a putt like this and you're thinking, gee, all i've got to do is two-putt to win, how do you do that? how do you lag it up there instead of just doing itt intu t intuiti intuitively? i've been there and it's not the easiest thing in the world. the perfect putt would be keeping it just a titch short. so for the win. >> well, he kept it just a titch
6:07 pm
short, johnny. >> yeah, one thing he didn't want to do is have it go off the end. >> you know, you hear about all those other flashier picks, rory, tiger, luke donaldson back on top in the world rankings, phil mickelson who we just heard from. hunter mahan, is it his turn to finally win his first major. >> just a straight-in putt. maybe right center. okay. after shooting 41 on the front nine, he hung in there better on the back, didn't he? >> yep. >> solo third for oosthuizen, his best finish on the pga tour outside that british open victory. >> and for the win at 16 under by one shot over pettersson. >> mahan will take that trip to augusta with a win at the shell
6:08 pm
houston open. >> he was two behind oosthuizen to begin the day and a final round 71 after yesterday's 65 by mahan gets it done at redstone. an impressive win for hunter mahan. a one-shot victory over pettersson. oosthuizen with a gamely effort on his final nine, but a 75 from his 54-hole lead by two not good enough. so hunter mahan moves to the top of the list in the latest fedex cup points standings. johnson wagner is second, mickelson into the fourth spot. let's send it down to roger. >> hunter, with that win, your second of the year, you move into the lead in the fedex cup. you've got a full head of steam going into next week. you've got to be feeling on top of the world. >> i feel great.
6:09 pm
i feel great. to have the lead for most of the back nine there, to hang in there, to hit some clutch shot, especially on 18 here, it feels great. >> now, winning the week before a major like this and the first major of the year, do you find it a big plus or is it maybe something that, you know, did i peak the wrong week? >> no. i'm glad i'm playing good, that's for sure. i'm glad i'm going to augusta because it's a special place and i'm looking forward to going there. i just want to wish my dad a happy birthday. it is his birthday. >> well, good luck to you. you are now the top ranked american player going into the masters. danny, back to you. >> happy birthday, dad. >> yeah, that's about as good as you said. >> nice present that son provided today. and a reminder that right now on golf channel, continuing final round coverage of the kraft championship. coming up it's your local news except on the west coast. it's an all new "dateline" fold by a special episode of "the celebrity apprentice."
