obama has done to this country. >> but governor romney in your opinion can all of a sudden develop that skill? he can get the guy sitting at the bar in alabama or the woman at the factory in des moines to feel he's one of them? >> you know, he will be able to do that, if not romney, if one of the other gop candidates happen to surpass romney in the delegate count, and whomever it is, matt, yes, will be able to really coalesce, we will be able to coalesce around that nominee, and make sure that voters understand that they have a choice here in which direction america's going to go. >> let's talk about the economy. you think it's improving? >> for whom? maybe for those some on wall street. but not for the millions still unemployed, not for those whose houses are under water, not for those who are having to settle at this point with a job that is not fulfilling for them financially. >> but jobs are coming back. the numbers will come out on

resource development in this country. again, people have a choice. do you want to fire that ceo of our country and replace him with somebody who knows how to allow the private sector to create jobs. how to responsibly -- >> some people say if things seem to get better or be getting better, why would i take that chance and change the person in the white house? >> because things aren't getting better fast enough. and they should be. and people who are hurting, people who are seeking that job, people who want to hold onto their businesses, and to their homes, and to be able to afford to send their child to college, people know that we have opportunity to do even more. be better in america than what we're doing today. >> if mitt romney is the nominee, one of the first real major decisions he'll have to make is on a vice presidential candidate. when you were plucked from obscuritity in 2008 you'd been alaska's governor about two years. you didn't have any real experience on the national stage, and in this era of intense media scrutiny, you took some lumps.
7:14 am
you had mixed results, as we all know. do you think, if mitt romney is the nominee, he should choose someone with more experience on the national battlefield than you had at the time? >> well, you know, i would put up my record as a ceo of a city, of a state, as an oil and gas regulator, up against any of the other potential gop vice presidential nominees last go-around. so you know, i'm proud to stand on my record as a private sector, and a public servant ceo. >> but if you were advising mitt romney, would you say go out and get someone who is battle tested on a national level? >> i would say it doesn't matter if that person has national level experience or not, they're going to get clobbered by the mainstream media who does not like the conservative message. and it doesn't matter if that person has been a known commodity to the mainstream, mainstream media or not. the gop ticket, to tell you the truth, matt, doesn't know what's
7:15 am
coming. they don't know what's going to hit them in terms of double standards being applied to them and the positions that they hold, and the records that they are running on from, you know, personal family issues to anything else. there will be that double standard applied no matter who it is. what i would advise mitt romney, or whomever the nominee would be, don't necessarily play it safe, and do just what the gop establishment expects them to do. and that is, to get somebody kind of just going along to get along, not willing to go rogue and get up and say that we need relentless, and we need sudden reform of our government to put it back on the side of the people. >> governor sarah palin. governor, thank you very much. i appreciate it. i want to mention to people you are going to stick around and join us for our 8:00 hour, which technically makes you part of the mainstream media for that hour. i just want you to know. nice to have you here. >> thank you so much. >> 15 after the hour. here's ann. >> matt, thank you. the jetblue pilot who suffered

the mother of three girls, certainly knows a lot about. also joining our discussion this morning dr. janet taylor a clinical psychiatrist at columbia university and the mother of four girls and haley kylpatrick the author of "the drama years." how parents can help them navigate through it. good morning to all of you. let me just tell you there have been a number of developments, for example in recent days a teacher in chicago suburb says that she is seeing a lack of confidence in teen girls that as a result she said that she's felt that there needed to be a summit to connect girls with their inner power, because there's too much focus on reality star-type celebrities. what are we not doing enough as mothers to help our daughters have more confidence? janet? >> well, you know, most mothers we want to have girls who are confident and successful. but what we need to understand is self-esteem is a rash year of success to expectation. when we hear them talking and making comments about reality stars we need to focus them back on their own strengths, their own values and we have to look
8:41 am
at ourselves as mothers in terms of what we teach them. so often it's from a deficit model. my thighs are too big. my hair is not straight enough. you know, i'm not brown enough, even. and so we have to refocus them back to what's good about them and teach them how to look in the mirror every day and say something positive about themselves. >> you know what would be nice, though, if the marketplace would demand, oh, that maybe some reality shows would start portraying some very healthy, independent, young women who are striving for strong work ethic, example, doing those things that are kind of the antithesis of so many of the things we're seeing portrayed in reality tv. >> we need better images. i imagine you would agree with that as well, haley. >> absolutely. i think that the most fascinating thing we learned at girl talk and through thousands of hours of interviews is girl's body image is so wrapped up in their self-esteem and unfortunately they don't understand the definition of self-esteem. they define it as to how others perceive them. so i agree with you dr. taylor, it's that we need to as adults

8:43 am
skipping that parenting role. >> absolutely. listen, parents, it is not your job, it is not your job to prevent your daughters from feeling disappointment, or pain. you know, bullying aside, you don't want to inject yourself in to your daughter's drama for two reasons. one, you don't want her to think that you're going to jump in and save her from any bad thing that's going to happen in her life. and two, you don't want her to think that she can't handle it. that she can't stand on her own. i think if we can really visualivisual ize our daughters walking a tight rope your job is to be on the bottom cheering her on. if she falls, encourage her to get back up and walk again. you cannot walk the tight rope for your daughter. >> our job is to encourage and teach boundaries and draw the line. and let our kids know consequences to what happens when they either fail or succeed. >> to your point. >> which both has to happen, because ultimately we want to teach our girls to make good decisions, be able to say no, i don't want to do this, no you can't make me, and that comes from failing and also saying this is what you need to do the next time. >> apparently we're already out
