tgif. i'm sarah caldwell. >> all right, john, you're in for -- >> tony. actually, iva, who was in for tony, who's in for tom later tonight, ok? >> ok, following you. >> you got all that? >> how's the o's forecast? >> that's turning out fine. it's gorgeous this morning. temperatures are even fairly pleasant. we thought it would be a little chillier this morning, but the breeze is keeping things stirred up in the atmosphere. the temperatures don't fall as much. big, full moon out there. there is a weather disturbance way to the south. if you're going down to norfolk today, early this morning, you may run into rain, and that's about it. as far north as we are, the sun will be out once we hit sunrise later this morning. temperatures maybe a little short of normal, but very pleasant for opening day. we'll be talking a lot about that this morning, and we'll also be talking about the traffic. here's kim dacey, who's in for -- >> well, sarah, whumes on the even corps desk.

it's national fill-in day, i guess. anyway, as far as your traffic is concerned, we have one accident at this early morning hour. northbound right at gate street, we have a disabled vehicle that looks like it might be causing problems because speed sensors are down to 17 miles an hour northbound on the j.f.x. just be aware of it as you head out the door. 60 miles an hour coming south on the harrisburg expressway as you head south to the beltway. and the rest of the major roadways seem to be up to speed. 11 minutes on the outer loop west side. 11 minutes on the inner loop in the northeast corner. 95 northbound between 100 and the beltway looking at six minutes. certainly no problems there. we'll give you a live look outside at some of those cameras. we have the beltway right at 295, the b.w. parkway, and things are moving just fine on both the inner and outer loop there. switching to eye live view of 95, north and southbound, very light for this time of the morning. and that's the latest on traffic pulse 11.

>> can you tell? our big story this morning, time to play ball. >> i think we're dressed appropriately. it's opening day for the borls, and get ready for the start of the season, fans got to have lunch with the orioles on thursday. more than 500 fans showed up at the sheraton downtown to eat and get autographs from their favorite players. this year fans are also celebrating the 20th anniversary of oriole park at camden yards. the team says we're in for some nice surprises throughout the season. >> hard to believe it's been 20 years at that great ballpark. yesterday i had an opportunity to preview some of the exciting new things that will be available to you at oriole park at camden yards, and you are going to be thrilled by what you see. >> the orioles take the field at 3:05 against the minnesota twins for the season opener. starting at 10:00 this morning, parking restrictions will be in place on streets around camden

brought on by proposed budget cuts. but the city's fire chief says it comes down to putting equipment where it's needed the most. of course, we can tell you that the station on fort avenue is just one of those where changes will be coming on july 1. we know that ladder number six and all of its personnel will be moved on eutaw street to downtown. the fire chief says this plan, of course, will put a ladder company in the midst of all of the high rise buildings. >> we don't want holes in our coverage in the city, especially for e.m.s. and fire, so we want to get there within five minutes. >> the response was, it only takes a couple of extra minutes. hold a match to your back side for two extra minutes. let me know how that feels. >> the city's fire union chief says he'll meet this coming week with mayor stephanie rawlings to talk about what he calls, again, a dangerous proposition. live at city fire headquarters in downtown, tim tooten,

wbal-tv 11 news. >> in project economy news, what can you buy for $4? hmm, a gallon of regular gas in most of maryland. a.a.a. midatlantic confirms the average price hit $4, up two cents from wednesday, six cents higher than the national average, and 32 cents more than a year ago. the reason why? >> oil refineries are switching from their winter blend to the more environmentally friendly but costlier spring blend, so motorists will now see prices rise at the pump. >> a.a.a. says despite rumors, they don't anticipate prices will hit the $5 mark this season. do you know of a good deal of gas prices around maryland? down load our new iphone app. >> today a fresh look at the still struggling economy. millions of americans are still out of work, but economists think we could see a significant number of jobs

added in the latest jobs report out today. 11 news reporter tara mergener joins us live from washington with this project economy report. good morning to you, tara. >> good morning to you, sarah. the news is a mixed bag. employers are adding jobs, but the unemployment rate is not expected to budge from 8.3%. >> in this economy, job hunters say patience is key. >> being hopeful and realizing that it's going to be a slow turnaround. >> companies have increased hiring recently, adding an average of 245,000 jobs per month between december and february. still, more than 23 million people remain either out of work or underemployed. >> on the face of it, that sounds good. we have to keep in mind, because of the ever-expanding population, we have to add around 100,000 jobs every month just to hold steady. >> but reports on the economy indicate americans are feeling

temperatures range from 37 degrees to 45 degrees across the area. cooler readings off to the northwest right now. but the clear skies and the little bit of breeze we have at about 10 to 15 miles an hour is stirring things up. otherwise we'd have really chilly temperatures. travel weather today, major destinations or connect points and what the weather is expected to be during the day today. the stormiest weather is down in tampa. they expect 80 degrees, but clouds and thunderstorms. also, pat sysk northwest, seattle in particular, has rain in their forecast today with a high of 52. but down in san francisco and los angeles, the sun will be shining. we'll talk more about the weather locally for this easter weekend coming up in just a minute. >> covering the nation this morning -- u.s. senator mitch mcconnell is urging president obama to back off the u.s. supreme court. speaking to leaders thurgs in kentucky, the senate majority leader says comments made by the president earlier this week, it's clear to him that mr. obama is trying to influence the court's decision on the healthcare reform law.

earlier this week, obama said he was confident the supreme court would not take an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning the law. the head of the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission will tour a plant in california today. the plant there will remain closed while investigators look into why the steam generator tubes are eroding. the plant has been closed for two months because of a small amount of radioactive steam that was being released from a leaking generator tube. >> an abandoned japanese ship is now under the sea. the u.s. coast guard hit the ship with gunfire until it explode and had sank in the gulf of alaska. last year's devastating tsunami set the ship adrift across the pacific ocean. the coast guard decided to sink the ship to prevent it from becoming a danger to the environment or to the other vessels. >> 5:12, 40 degrees on tv hill. a major bank reveals what the

we're up to 389 miles an hour, but still a delay if you head north on the j.f.x. another disabled vehicle, northbound on 95 right at caton avenue. otherwise, most of the major roadways looking ok. the inner loop along the west side checking in at eight minutes. eight minutes on 95 northbound between the beltway there on the south side, the fort mchenry, and 18 minutes on 895 southbound between the 95, so no delays there to worry about. this is a live look at the beltway right at 295, the b.w. parkway, and it looks very light for this time of the morning. live view of 95 at the fort mchenry toll plaza. southbound traffic comes towards us, and it looks like that is moving freely. northbound is looking good too. that's the latest on traffic pulse 11. now for a check of the buses and trains, we head to kurt kroncke with the m.t.a. good morning, kurt. >> good morning. we're moving along nice on the rails. no delays on the penn, camden and brunswick lines on marc. light rail metro subway on schedule. we have on the buses, the four bus diverting at southland and college drive. construction there. 22 bus, a diversion at bayview boulevard and mason, also

construction-related. for the m.t.a. trancity team, i'm kurt kroncke. now back to john collins. good morning. >> thank you. good morning, kurt. our weather this morning is nearly perfect. we have a bit of a breeze, really dry atmosphere. if it wasn't for the breeze, a lot of the temperatures would be down in the 30's right now, but the breeze is holding things up a little bit. the only weather to speak of is down in the south. it was down there yesterday, rain with high pressure holding that or suppressing the rain to the south, so we don't expect that to be an issue during the day today as it moves out over the atlantic ocean. let's look at what happened yesterday. it was nice, 63 was the high at the airport. inner harbor, 64. just about on target for this time of year. today we may be just short of that point. 43 and 50, where -- 43 and 50 were yesterday's lows. parkton at 37. westminster, 36. same in frederick. there are frost warnings out, but it may be tough for some of these reading toss break all the way down to 32 or lower

early this morning with that breeze keeping things up. we'll see what happens. a couple of these areas may get close to freezing. just about everybody else though is in the low to mid 40's around the area. the freeze warning covers the entire northern part of the state, cecil, harford, northern baltimore county, carroll, howard, montgomery, frederick, and then points west. that will be in effect until 9:00 this morning. again, i think many areas are going to stay just above the freezing point the way things look. here's the satellite image, showing this disturbance spinning to the south down in the carolinas. again, with this area of high pressure overhead, the clouds and the rain just can't push up this far north. it looks like that will slip pretty far south. here's the big area of high pressure. it's huge. this will dominate our easter weekend. so that keeps the weather fair. the next storms out west, well, it's going to take a while for everything to move eastward, so the entire weekend is dominated by the big batch of blue out there. so, our forecast today, mostly sunny skies. there will be a few clouds. the farther south you go, the more clouds you're going to see

today. northwest winds at 10 to 15 miles an hour. 56 to 60 for the high. insta-weather futurecast shows that disturbance moving out of the picture. we're dry saturday and most of sunday we're dry as well. by the end of the day sunday, a few clouds, maybe a few showers to the north of us, but i think the rain chances are minimal for easter sunday, so we generally call for fair weather with high temperatures in the 50's to around 60 for the high. there will be a northwest wind though. here's the seven-day forecast. 59 today. 61 saturday. 63 on sunday. rain chances kick in monday, tuesday, and wednesday. >> amazon announces a new spanish language e-book. it's called e-books kindle, and it's targeted to the spanish speaking population in the u.s. the spanish kindle store offers 30,000 spanish language titles, plus 14 leading latin american newspapers. more stores are now offering to

email digital receipts to their customers after in-store purchases. a survey by america's research group finds more than half of consumers say yes to emails received, but they still want the paper receipt at the store too. some shoppers say getting a paper receipt allows them to check for accuracy before leaving a store. we're just more than a week away from the deadline to file your income tax returns, and a national survey has received some surprising answers on what americans plan to do with their tax refunds this year. 11 news reporter chris clackum explains. >> credit card companies, banks, and anyone who extends credit will like hearing what most americans plan to do with tax refunds this year. >> 42% of americans said that they plan to use that windfall from uncle sam to pay off their debt, pay down bills. >> this person writes for yahoo! finance, who along with "fitness" magazine surveyed 2,000 people on their spending and saving habits and found most would rather be

financially than physically fit. >> 84% of women said they would rather have $10,000 in the bank than jennifer aniston's toned physique. >> she says, in this economy, cash is king. so adjust your withholdings if you're getting a refund of $3,000 or more. >> if you're getting anything higher than that, that probably means you're paying the i.r.s. too much out of every single paycheck. >> go to the i.r.s. website with its withholding calculator to make the adjustments that will make your paycheck fatter. >> and that way you can actually save and pay off debt. >> the e-book trend is on.

>> for today, let's focus on the housing market. we know that the housing meltdown continues to weigh on the big banks, but just how much? j.p. morgan c.e.o. jamie die moan says the banks could bring in as much as $24 million in annual profit if you exclude losses on home loans. last year the company earned a record $19 billion. in a letter to shareholders, the c.e.o., jamie dimon, said the main difference between what the bank is earning and what it should be earning continues to be the high cost and the losses tied to those mortgages. j.p. morgan faces more litigation costs tied to faulty mortgages, even though it settled some of its bigger cases in the past year. well, the e-book trend is gaining popularity. with 21% of americans saying

they've read an e-book in the past year, and that's up from 17% just in mid december. that's according to pew research. one reason, of course, all those holiday sales of apple's ipad, also amazon's kindle fire, and barnes & noble's nook. but still, most say they're not completely ready to give up the printed book. 88% of those who read e-books in the past year also say they've read the good, old-fashioned counter part as well. that is business news at the new york stock exchange. i'm deborah kostroun with bloomberg business report. >> thank you, deborah. 5:23, 40 degrees on tv hill. still no information about the mega millions winner from maryland. >> and the woman claiming to have the ticket now says she isn't sure where it is. we'll explain. s things fun.

>> good morning, and welcome back to 11 news today. i'm lisa robinson in for stan. >> and i'm sarah caldwell in for mindy. john, how's the orioles opening day forecast looking? >> perfect. >> excellent. >> perfect. couldn't be better baseball weather, not too hot, not too chilly. and plenty of sun, and what more can i say? >> sounds great. >> and we'll do it again tomorrow and do it again for the most part on sunday. the whole thing is lining up -- the stars, sun, and moon will almost be lined up right. big, full moon this morning. it's absolutely gorgeous out there. if you're headed south today, you may run into rain shower activity. norfolk southward this morning, there are some rain showers, a little weather disturbance, but that will move off shore. none of it drifting northward. we've got good weather here. temperatures are in the 30's north of town. everybody else is in the 40's this morning. it's almost too good to be true for a weekend like we have lined up with everything that's going on, easter, opening day,

everything else. how's the traffic doing this morning? let's see if we can pull it through, see if everything's all right. >> we need to mirror what he's saying. >> i think a lot of people are off school and work and everything because it's good friday, so things are much lighter than expected. we actually aren't dealing with too many issues. we really just have one situation we're dealing with on 95. that's northbound 95 at caton avenue, a disabled vehicle there. it doesn't appear to be affecting traffic, at least what what we can tell so far. the major roadways looking ok. 58 miles an hour on the outer loop of the beltway there on the northwest corner. 64 on the harrisburg expressway coming south towards the beltway. and 65 on 95 in the northeast corner heading south toward the beltway. certainly no problems to report. a live look outside at the beltway in the area of 295, the b.w. parkway. looks like things are moving just fine on both the inner and outer loops there. switching over to a live view of 95 in the area of the fort mchenry toll plaza, southbound traffic is coming towards us, and that's picking up, as it normally does at this time of

unit will leave this peninsula in south baltimore unmanned and exposed. >> only takes a couple of extra minutes to get there. hold a match to your back side for two extra minutes and let me know how it feesms >> this is part of the plan to end the daily rotating fire company, what we've seen since 2009, and permanently close three fire companies. truck 10 on the west side, squad 11, and engine out near bayview, and truck 15 on east baltimore. >> moving to permanently disband these companies is more efficient, it's easier to manage for the chiefs that are here that have to do it day to day. >> no fire stations will be closed, and there will be no layoffs. instead, the plan calls for a complex redeployment of resources, including reassignments for some 72 firefighters. >> all we're doing is taking some firefighters that are assigned to one company and one area of the city and moving inside the fire stations. >> and in the process, he says

keeping response times close to the national standard. but rick hoffman and his rank-and-file are absolutely opposed. >> i think it's a ludicrous plan. i think we're playing a numbers game with people's lives. >> the hoffman -- hoffman says he's meeting with the mayor next week to try to convince her to block this plan. tim tooten, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you, tim. in session 2012 news this morning, a breakthrough in the state budget impasse. senate conferences are offering their house counterparts a compromise on two fronts. first, teacher pensions. senators are willing to go with the house plan to shave 50% of the cost of teacher pensions in the first year and keep talking about the rest of the phase-in period second. increasing the state income tax rate, the senate offered to go along with the house plan to reduce exemptions and raise taxes on single filers.

>> well, we are expecting good news about the economy later this morning. the march jobs report out today is expected to show more than 200,000 new jobs created last month. 11 news reporter tracie potts has the latest in this project economy report from washington. >> even though the unemployment rates may remain steady at 8.3%, today's labor department report is expected to show 203,000 new hires in march. >> if we're growing jobs, private-sector jobs at a couple hundred thousand a month, that's good. we need to do more. >> a third of employers added full-time workers this year, the highest since the recession began. >> that's strong enough for people to feel better about a jobs market, the availability of employment, but not strong enough to start to raise wages. >> experts expect most of the new jobs came from private companies. governments are still laying off, but not as much as before. this week, the number of americans seeking unemployment

>> 20 minutes before 6:00. it's friday morning, opening day. and we have clear skies. we've already got the lights warmed up, getting ready for the big game today, get the season started. the weather is looking good so far with that 45 degree reading downtown. temperatures this morning, 30's up to our north and northwest, but here's what the forecast is for the entire area during the day today, with the exception of a few scattered clouds mostly south of us. we're going to see plenty of sunshine, a little bit of a breeze, and temperatures very comfortable. normal high this time of year is 61. we'll probably be just short of that, almost perfect weather for baseball. and we'll be talk ago lot about that during the day today and more on the forecast coming up.
