back with more of "today" on this tuesday morning. the 10th day of april, 2012. we have a wonderful crowd outside on the plaza this morning. and they all look like they're having a great time here in the big apple. although some april showers may be on the way. it's a beautiful morning so far. and so we're glad that they can enjoy it. meantime i'm ann curry along with "meet the press's" david gregory. >> a lot of meteorological details this morning. i can't say the word. al, do you agree? >> a lot of meteorological details. >> ann, i think your weather forecast -- >> in the meantime, great show ahead. >> anyway. >> anyway.

them a deal. jill martin is here, she's got her "steals & deals." a screaming deal. >> she's got jewelry. she has a polka dotted robe all and more for really great prices. we'll tell you all about it. >> by the way, i saw mentioned that mariska hargitay earlier, she wanted to make a mention that she's been a big support -- supporter of -- helping survivors of sex out assault and she wanted to mention that april 25th is denim day. and so everyone's supposed to wear denim, right, so that we can help support survivors of sexual assault. i will make that mention and i also want to also say it's time for a check of the top stories from natalie morales at the news desk. >> good morning once again. good morning, everyone. record breaking high temperatures this spring are bringing more extreme weather today. at least two tornadoes have touched down in northwestern oklahoma, injuring two people and damaging a county jail with grapefruit sized hail. meantime brushfires in florida, new jersey and on new york's long island forced some residents to evacuate and

interrupted amtrak service between connecticut and new york city monday night. in north korea, nbc news has learned this week's rocket launch is set to go. this as space experts in pyongyang say all preparations are pleat ahead of takeoff. the u.s. is telling north korea not to go ahead with the launch, saying it would further isolate the asian nation and would violate u.n. security council resolutions. the shooting death of unarmed teen trayvon martin will not be presented to a florida grand jury. the special prosecutor investigating martin's slaying may still file charges against george zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot martin, he claims, in self-defense. meantime, zimmerman's lawyers have confirmed that a website asking for donations for his defense is real. the two men accused of going on a deadly shooting spree in a predominantly black neighborhood of tulsa have confessed acco according to place. officials say jake england admitted to shooting three people and alvin watts confessed to shooting two. three of those victims died.

the suspects are being held on more than $9 million bail each. we now have the winner or winners, should we say, from maryland, of the $656 million mega millions jackpot. lottery officials say the lucky ticket holders are two women and a man who all work in maryland's public school system. but they wish to remain anonymous. one person who is not one of those winners, mirlande wilson, who attracted national attention for claiming she had the winning ticket. the lion king reigned supreme over the great white way. box office figures released monday revealed that the disney broadway classic has now surpassed "phantom of the opera" as the highest grossing musical of all time, breaking in $853.8 million since its 1997 debut. and don't look down. an american leading a group of urban explorers has scaled europe's tallest building, the shard in london. clinging to a crane 1,000 feet in the air, bradley derrick says

he and his group have scaled the unfinished building a number of times over the past year. he says they never break in, only sneak in and leave everything just as they found it. garrett says that he does it for the love of the building, apparently a security guard actually helped him get up there. so, five minutes past the hour. let's go now to ann, david and savannah. or al! >> or me. either way. all right. thanks so much, natalie. let's show you what we got as far as your weather is concerned. record breaking temperatures soaring as we continue to move forward. we've got colder than normal temperatures, we've got wind gusts 25 to 30 miles per hour in the area, and so, stretching all the way from the northeast down to the south we have high fire dangers up. we have red flag warnings from greenville all the way to new york city. and out to the west, we're talking about frost and freeze warnings, so we've got literally fire and ice to talk about over the next 24 hours. >> good morning.

we will start out with quiet conditions. the clouds will build up into the afternoon. it will be a breezy day. 20% chance for a rain time now for "today's money." financial rules to live by that can help save your marriage or relationship. jean chatzky is the author of the new book "money rules: the simple path to lifelong security." >> nice to see you. >> this is one that, you know, most couples really fight about. you say these are pretty simple rules to go by. and basically you're talking about live below your means. which i think is a great idea. >> that's right. this is money rule number 10,
9:07 am
live below your means. it's because we know that couples that can actually accumulate $10,000 in assets are 70% less likely to get divorced than couples that have no assets. so the bottom line is you just have to save money and that means getting yourself with that program. >> and i was going to say, how tough is that, though? >> well, you know, some people tend to be savers. some people tend to be spenders. i think the trick is getting the savings out of the account before you have the opportunity to spend it. so as soon as your paycheck lands you just move some money into a savings account and then you can live on the rest of what's in there for the rest of the month. >> number 35, just because you have a coupon doesn't mean you have to go shopping. >> and it's because we know that in cases where you feel your spouse is a foolish spender, you're 45% more likely to get divorced. >> ooh. >> right. men and women. equally. and so if you are one of those people who is a sucker or a sale, and there are a lot of them out there, you got to know
9:08 am
who you are, and you have to understand that a coupon is not a license to spend money. because another one of the money rules, if it's 50% off, it's still 50% on. you're still spending that money. >> exactly. i like number 33, trying to keep up with the joneses, just know the joneses are in debt. >> another thing that's really bad for your marriage is feeling that your spouse is materialistic. and that's essentially what we're doing when we're trying to keep up with the joneses. we want what they have. well, just realize, if they have it, there's a really good chance that they're in debt. 115 million americans carry debt to the tune of more than $10,000. and we're talking about high interest rate credit card debt. so pretty bad thing to do. >> and then that kind of goes into this next one, number 27, about good debt. good debt usually cheaper. >> right. so the difference between good debt and bad debt is that good debt gets you some place. it's the roof over your head. it's the car you drive back and forth to work. it's your college education. you know it because the interest
9:09 am
rate tends to be lower. bad debt, high interest rate credit card debt, drives couples, particularly newlywed couples, toward divorce. and toward those fights. so you want to steer clear of that kind of debt. >> number 93, declare some financial independence. >> just because you get married doesn't make you the same person. it doesn't mean that you want all of the same things, and, in fact, your differences probably attracted you in the first place. so i believe, and this is why we put it in money rule 93, is that you need to have a little bit of money so that you can do what you want to do with it. otherwise it starts to feel like you're asking permission. it starts to feel vaguely parental. and that's not at all romantic. >> that's not good. number 89, i think quite frankly should be higher up. don't lend money to friends or relatives. >> right. because if you think about the things that cause fights between you and those friends and relatives, lending money is never a good idea. you go out to dinner with these people and you start watching
9:10 am
what are they ordering? are those new shoes? and then you bring it home with you and it causes a fight with your spouse. so you shouldn't lend money to friends and relatives. >> what about the converse about borrowing money? >> it's the easiest way to lose those friends and relatives from your life. i'd steer clear of it altogether. >> sometimes, consider it a gift -- >> if you can afford it that's absolutely the thing to do. if you can afford it, give it away, you forget about it. you say i never want to discuss this again, this is a one-time thing and we're done with it. >> all right jean chatzky. thanks so much. >> sure. >> great rules. >> and still ahead, put your best face forward. bobbi brown has got some tips for finding the perfect foundation. she's got the perfect face. but up next, jill martin here with mr. you know, i didn't want to be dragged into it. i want to do it my own way, which is great for me. men will say it's not that i don't want to get married. i want to get married on my terms. but how do you talk to a man about marriage? don't talk to him about you getting married. ask him about how his parents' relationship is, what he feels about children. and that will tease out ideas about marriage rather than confronting him. >> no ultimate ups then? >> not at all. >> another thing you say that men want you to know but they don't often tell you is apparently they like a natural body with flaws, they say it's better than a plastic body. >> well, this is a truth. and i don't believe this. here's the deal. guys are very visual. yes we like to look at a woman who is very nicely enhanced. but when you talk about living with someone and falling in love with someone, guys want au naturel. all guys will say, i love the beauty of my woman as she ages. i'm aging also, that is fine. unfortunately, society makes us believe that the woman who has all these great surgical
