midwest sparking dozens of tornadoes and the danger is not over yet. 11 news tonight starts right now. [captioning made possible by consetellation energy group] good evening, everybody. i'm kate amara. in for deborah weiner. we will begin tonight in the midwest where there have been reports of more than 60 tornadoes. in cherokee, oklahoma, an amazing sight, twin tornadoes caught on tape. there is word tonight that a possible tornado hit a hospital in creston, iowa, and residents are not out. woods yet. meteorologists warning people to prepare for overnight storms that could produce even more tornadoes. 11 news reporter jay gray is in oklahoma city with the latest. >> the spin -- >> as promised. >> getting very intense now, mike. >> the storms began popping late this evening. multiple tornadoes on the ground in oklahoma. >> big debris cloud. big debris cloud.

luckily we hope -- >> more storms ripping across kansas. early on, more than 60 twisters reported across at least four states. and it's only the beginning of what could be a very dangerous night. >> the atmosphere and the way in a it set up, we're expecting -- and the way that it set up, we're expecting thunderstorms, large hail and damaging long track tornadoes. >> the national weather service has issued a rare high risk warning for the central and southern plains. prime conditions in place for what they call strong to violent tornadoes. the early twisters were wide and moving quickly. >> the multiple vortex -- >> leaving a path of twisted metal and splintered wood and a growing fear that more are on the way. many, possibly striking after nightfall. >> that's really what we're concerned about. is if we get any of these long track tornadoes during the nighttime hours. >> the concern is what so many in the strike zone may find in the morning light. as the violent system continues to cut across the midwest.

jay gray, wbal-tv 11 news. >> and when you look at the map of the nation, and you see the swath it is cutting, it is -- it's almost cutting the nation in half. >> and this is something that forecasters have had their eyes on for several days. this system, everything is going together to produce this is rather obvious. >> unbelievable. >> it's a spring setup. this is the kind of weather we get this time of year. here's what the satellite imagery looked like over kansas. kansas in the middle of the picture there. at noon today, storms are just developing. in fact, the storms you see there weren't there at 10:00 in the morning. they developed over two hours. i'm going to put this in motion and take it into the early evening hours. up until about 6:00 or so. and you can see how these storms just explode over the plains states. now, this is all in central kansas. and it reesms up into iowa. -- reaches up into iowa. and as far south as the texas panhandle. i'll switch over to the radar that's going on right now. you can see how two sets of storms have developed. a strong squall line in iowa

and the tornado-producing storms which are in nebraska, kansas and a little bit in oklahoma. so we'll talk more about those storms. and our own chance for rain. only a little bit coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, john. now to the closing of two best buy stores in the baltimore area. one in hunt valley, the other downtown at the inner harbor and that's where 11 news reporter in addition in addition -- nadia ramdez joins us. >> best buy has not given any specific reasons why they are closing these stores but we talked to a local economist who tries to explain the loig to their actions -- the logic to their actions. 11 news captured employees walking out of the hunt valley best buy stores saturday after being notified the store and the inner harbor store location will be closing for good may 12. >> it seems like it's really convenient right here. so it's such a shame that they're closing it. >> unfortunately it's been like that for a while here in baltimore. >> the maryland stores are among 50 stores best buy plans to close nationwide this year. 15 additional baltimore area

retail store locations will remain open for business. the company says the closures are part of its transformation strategy and that it was not an easy decision to make. >> certain things you expect to close. but not a best buy. electronics store. people are always buying electronics. >> the minnesota based company has been dealing with a number of challenges lately, including the recent resignation of their c.e.o., brian dunn, amid reports of an inappropriate relationship with a female worker and poor corporate earnings. >> this has been an unsettling time for retail in general. and a -- the large aspect a. significant aspect of the change has been the way the internet alters our behavior. the way we shop. >> economists say while people losing their jobs may be impacted by the closures, it should not have an impact on the baltimore economy as a whole. >> baltimore regional economy is improving. and so these people will find themselves looking for work in an economy that's somewhat improved. certainly over the last two or

three years. but even over the last seven months. >> now, befment buy won't hospital employees find other positions within the company and offer severance packages. we're live at the inner harbor this evening. wbal-tv 11 news. >> nadia, thanks. we now know the name of the man who was shot and killed in west baltimore last night. city police say an officer on patrol heard gunshots around 8:30. when he arrived in the 400 block of watty court he found 23-year-old brandon simms suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. simms was rushed to shock trauma where he died. $1 million. that's the bond for a man charged in connection with that videotape attack that went viral according to the suspect's attorney, warren brown. the investigators say 21-year-old aaron parsons is the one who threw the pun of that leveled a man outside of the mitchell courthouse back on march 19. authorities say the victim from arlington, virginia, was then beaten, robbed and stripped of his clothes.

parsons surrendered to police last night. >> hopefully this will lead to the identity of other suspects that we're looking for and be debriefed by detectives and we'll follow the evidence where it takes us. >> mr. parsons now faces robbery, assault, and other charges. and police are still trying to track down the suspects in connection with that attack. investigators were able to freeze the part of that videotaped assault and zoom in on these three people wanted in the case. if you know them or know where they might be, you're asked to call baltimore city police at 410-396-2411. nearly a dozen u.s. secret service agents and five u.s. military service members are now the focus of an investigation into allegations of misconduct. they're accused of bringing profit touts to their hotel close to where president obama is staying as he attends the summit of the americas. nbc's kristen walker has more from columbia. >> according to u.s. officials, the allegations involve at least 11 members of the u.s.

secret service. and five u.s. military service members here in columbia on assignment to protect the president. they are alleged to have bought prostitutes back to their hotel rooms. sources say there was a dispute over a payment which was brought to the attention of authorities. according to the defense department, the service members are now confined to quarters here. the secret service says their personnel were sent home before the president's arrival. and replaced with others. >> the president was made aware of the incidents in question yesterday. the white house was informed thursday evening. >> representative peter king, chairman of the house homeland security committee, has been briefed on the evolving scandal. >> all i know is that two of the 11 were supervisors. i did not ask if they were married or not. >> this is really the biggest scandal in the history of the secret service. >> ron kessler who wrote "in the president's secret service," says the incident could be indicative of a larger problem within the agency. >> what the agency needs is an

60,000 pounds of the raw frozen fish that the f.d.a. says is contaminated. this tuna is used to make sushi in restaurants and grocery stores. this outbreak so far has sickened more than 112 people in d.c., maryland, and 19 other states. 12 have been hospitalized. 100 years ago tonight, the titanic was still steaming toward its tragic fate. it hit that iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on april 14, 1912. less than three hours later, the ship was in half. and on the sea bed almost four kilometers below. one century later, the sinking of the titanic is being remembered around the world and in middle river tonight, dozens of people marked this day with a titanic dinner experience. >> it's so wonderful to see you again. >> i appreciate that. thank you. >> welcome aboard the titanic. >> this is a remembrance and re-enactment of a day 100 years ago to this hour of the fatal

of the titanic to pull up this -- >> there will be -- the sighting of the iceberg. the striking of the iceberg. the sinking of the ship. and finally at the end poseidon will come out. and my wife will give a benediction to those 1,200 souls who died that night. >> now your 11 insta-weather plus forecast. with meteorologist john collins. >> kind of feel in the air this evening that things are changing a little bit. warmer air is coming in. and part of that warmer air has been some clouds that we've picked up this afternoon, this evening. and some showers just west of the city. here's the beltway around baltimore. here's carroll county and howard county. so indications are -- the air is fairly dry so some may only be sprinkles. the darker green shades up into pennsylvania and out around haguers town that's some shower -- around hagerstown that's some shower activity. and garrett county as well. that's the leading edge and leftovers from the big storms

that occurred last night and early this morning out in the area where they're getting some really big rains right now. and some really powerful storms. more on that in a minute. let's take a look at what happened today. 76 the high at the airport. 78 at the inner harbor. 60 is typical and record is 91 so didn't threaten that. morning lows in the 30's and 40's. and we haven't had any rain officially here in baltimore. as of yet. and those temperatures, everywhere in the 60's except ocean city a little seabreeze and 58 right now. we change the color from bright green to a darker green. this is where the rain has been falling most persistently and trushes in the 50's and 40's in some case -- and trurks in the 50's and 40's in some cases. not a heavy rain and won't be very significant. so if your garden is way too dry, it's not really going to do the job. the more significant rains, really getting showers, are up in pennsylvania. these lighter shades of green, which you see overhead and out to the west, that's just a few sprinkles. the air at least at this point is pretty dry. but it's setting the stage for more rain as we go on. we move to the west. and we see these really big

powerful storms out in the plains states. really big squall line. moving into eastern iowa right now. not necessarily a tornado maker. but that could produce some strong winds. and these are all the tornado-producing storms lined up right along this cold front. out to the west. and what's going on, cold air, warm air contrast. the storms are developing right between the two. the high level jet stream that's coming out of the southwest, the low level jet with the warm humid air is coming directly from the south. and where they intersect right here, that's where you're getting all the tornadic activity and puts a spin in the atmosphere. and that's how you can get those storms to crank up. now, here, our weather will be much less severe. we might get a few light showers tonight and otherwise most cloudy skies. 53-57 overnight low. southwest winds at five to 10. tomorrow, 78 to 83 so a few degrees warmer than today. start the morning out with some clouds and maybe a shower briefly. but eventually go to partly cloudy skies. southwest winds at 10 to 15 miles an hour. voters -- boaters on the bay, small crafment advisories out.

winds could gust to 20 from the southwest. a mild day. rain showers skipping across overnight tonight and during the day tomorrow, we get rid of the clouds and get some sun in the picture. that should hold together through monday. tuesday, a cold front will come through. but it looks like that will go through most dry and some rain south of us on tuesday into wednesday. so the forecast really rain chances early sunday. relatively dry weather most of the week. temperatures back off. 81 tomorrow. 84 on monday. 70's and 60's until the end of the week when rain chances pick up again. >> all right. orioles playing surprisingly well tonight. >> they're looking good. doing some surprising things in toronto. and they don't play very well there normally. tonight they did and doing it with the tempo and getting physical. coming up in sports.
