[captioning made possible by constellation energy group] >> we begin with breaking news. a police officer in anne arundel county rushed to trauma after being struck by a car. it happened on east-bound route 50 near route 665. we're told the officer was

outside his vehicle for a traffic stop when he was hit by an oncoming car. police say there were three people in that car and they took off running. right now two are in custody. police still looking for a third. and there's no word right now on the officer's condition. >> there's tornado number one. there's tornado number two. >> more than 100 tornadoes reported across the midwest this weekend. destroying towns, taking lives and leaving a trail of destruction. good evening, everyone. all across the midwest people have been taking cover this weekend. we're told at least five people were killed. let's get right to the latest. >> they were the images and sounds so many had feared. >> you hear some people screaming down the road there. you could hear stuff crashing and breaking and it was -- sounded horrible. >> tornadoes, nearly 100 of them, tearing across the midwest saturday and into sunday.

at one time two funnels dropping from the clouds in oklahoma. the violent system blasted through nebraska, iowa and kansas, tearing away anything in its path. >> everything's gone. just gone. everything we had worked for all of our lives. >> in wichita, took only seconds to dismantle a part of this manufacturing plant. >> this was a monster system. >> it was even worse in woodward, oklahoma. joel and his daughter frantically searched for somewhere to ride out the ef-3 tornado. >> we crawled up underneath here. and we stayed there and debris was hitting our legs an stuff. >> but they were the lucky ones. five people were killed in this small town. three when a twister ripped through this mobile home park. the loss has overwhelmed this tight-knit community. adding to their grief the knowledge that warning sirens in the city were damaged during another storm early saturday and did not sound as the deadly twister moved in. >> i thought about that ever since i found out that we lost

five people. i would think it would have helped, yes. >> it's help the heartland now needs as the cleanup begins. >> new tonight, baltimore city police are looking into a serious crash involving a motor bike in west baltimore. we're told it happened around 6:00 near gold street and pennsylvania avenue. crews rushed one person to shock trauma that. person's injuries may be life-threatening. right now there's no word on a cause. just hours from now, there may be a lot of frustrated drivers on baltimore's roads. the big construction project on the j.f.x. is under way and mop's rush how will put detours to the test. what can you expect and some tips to avoid the mess. >> we all know how backed up the j.f.x. can get and that's even without any construction. for the next two months, crews will be out here working on parts of the j.f.x. to repair some drainage pipes and

officials say if you want to avoid a traffic headache, avoid this area altogether. there's no doubt that the j.f.x. is the most convenient way to get in and out of downtown baltimore. >> everybody does. really. >> coming from downtown. it's all right cluttered up already. >> it could become even more cluttered for the monday rush hours. construction on parts of the road are already under way and city transportation officials have an urgent message for drivers. >> we want the motorists to know to please say it off the j.f.x. by all means. >> one lane in each direction is shut down and will stay closed for a at least two months. crews are working to repair crushed drain pipes which will help prevent sipping holes from forming in the future. >> capacity will be decreased tremendously and to carry the 6,000-per-hour vehicles is going to be very challenging. >> i guess i'll take another road. >> that's exactly what officials are urging drivers to do. if you have an -- if you haven't already, start to familiarize

patrick's day videotaped attack that went viral. officials say parsons is the one who threw the punch that leveled a man outside of metro courthouse back on march 19. authorities say the victim, who was from arlington, virginia, was then beaten, robbed and stripped of his clothes. we caught up with the baltimore city police commissioner today who gave us his thoughts on parson's arrest. >> these are the standards for conduct that we expect in baltimore. and when you step outside of that and you're guilty of this behavior, there's a price to pay. >> and police are still trying to track down these suspects in connection with that same attack. investigators were able to freeze a portion of the videotape to zoom in on these three people wanted in the case. if you know who they are, where they are, you're asked to call baltimore city police at 410-396-2411. baltimore police still looking into a shooting from saturday that left one man dead. it happened on the 1900's block of eding street in west baltimore. police say somebody shot

34-year-old phillip scott multiple times after an argument involving a few men. anybody with more information on this is asked to call the police. and two men died this weekend in a high-speed crash. police say it happened around 10:00 saturday near falls road and beckleysville road. police say the driver of the vehicle lost control and the car rolled onto its side. >> when the vehicle was rolling, thoast both the driver and the passenger were ejected from the vehicle. the passenger was transported to maryland shock trauma where he later passed away. and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. >> right now there's no word on an exact cause. fireworks and celebrations this weekend in north korea, sort of surprising because the country tried to launch a satellite this week and it failed. but many in the country say it was just a first step and much of the world, including the u.s., is condemning the attempted launch. officials think north korea is saying that they're trying to launch satellites but really

testing out long range missiles. prostitutes and the secret service. 11 agents facing scrutiny after a night of wild partying in columbia -- clomyafment they were there preparing for president obama's visit. now there's a big investigation and we have the story from washington. >> president obama's summit visit to colombia has been upstaged by allegations of scandalous misconduct by some of the secret service personnel sent there to ensure his safety. >> if it turns out that some of the allegations that have been made in the press are confirmed, then of course i'll be angry. we're representing the people of the united states. and when we travel to another country, i expect us to observe the highest standards. >> the hotel is said to be the scene of a night of over -the top partying on wednesday that included booze and prostitutes. 11 secret service agents and uniform division officers have been relieved of duty.

five members of the military are also said to be under investigation. the president stayed at a different hotel and the agents involved were not members of the elite presidential protection division. but now the whole agency and its culture are cast in an unflattering light. >> the investigation will not be about the 11 to 20 or more involved. it will be about how did this happen and how often has this happened before? >> ron kesler wrote the definitive book on the secret service. >> this really is the biggest scandal in the history of the secret service. >> and a deep embarrassment for an agency whose motto is, worthy of trust and confidence. >> a violent string of coordinated attacks rattled afghanistan today. the areas were rocked by blasts, rockets and gunfire, reportedly aimed at western embassies. the assaults were a blow to the planed 2014 departure of combat

troops to the country. the taliban told nbc news that they are delbletly attacking the embassies of america, britain and germany and they said they'll keep targeting these places. members of the maryland army national guard had a special welcome home today after deployment in iraq. the 17 soldiers of the guard's 29th mobile public affairs detachment came home to a freedom salute ceremony downtown. this sergeant says she is proud of what she accomplished. >> it was a pleasure serving. got to see a lot of stuff, got to meet a lot of incredible people. >> well, in iraq the unit provided broadcast and print journalism support for the u.s. a maryland church devastated by a fire is looking to make a comeback. we were there as neighbors opened their doors to let a displaced congregation enjoy a sunday of prayer. and some money troubles for big box store, has people here in

>> it is still unclear why an arsonist would nearly destroy a church last week but while the structure of the church has been broken, as we saw earlier today, the spirit most certainly is not. >> for the congregation of pleanlts zion baptist, there was a new temporary home for worship courtesy of a friend.

>> it's a blessing from the sky. the lord blessed us. one thing, you never worry about anything. you remember that. that god always got something for you. he's the captain. >> it was just this past tuesday when pleasant zion baptist church suffered a nearly half a million dollars in damage after a shed fire intentionally set spread to the church. the pastor said three boys may be involved but he auto not elaborate further -- he would not elaborate further. in a news setting the pastor told congregants not to worry and it was clear that song and worship trumped concerns about the investigation. whatever happened and why it happened, the pastor embraced a deeper understanding. >> satan is rampant and he might do anything down there. folks don't have any god in them, they just, they just go out and do anything. >> wishing them the best there. two best buy stores in the baltimore area will be closed for good as of may 12.

the hunt valley and inner harbor location, these are among 50 best buy stores to be closed nationwide this year. experts say not to worry, while people losing their jobs may be impacted by the closures, it should not have an impact on the baltimore economy as a whole. >> the baltimore regional economy is improving and so these people will find themselves looking for work in an economy that's somewhat improved, certainly over the last two or three years. but even over the last seven or eight months. >> 15 additional stores in the area will remain open for business. just a reminder that the deadline to file your taxes is tuesday. it would normally be today, april 15, but it was pushed back because it's a sunday and monday is a d.c. federal holiday. maryland state taxes are also due tuesday. it looks like the 1997 blockbuster hit "titanic" will go on and on. the james cameron film has broke its own record of $2 billion in ticket sales. the movie recently was rereleased, this time in 3-d. time to coincide with the 100th

anniversary of the real-life disaster which was last night. only one other film has toppled $2 billion, "avatar" which is also one of cam ron's movies -- cameron's movies. >> now your forecast. >> nice day today. we had some clouds, debris from storms that were out west. we look at the radar now. nothing going on here, again some clouds going overhead, that's about it. big storms tonight. farther east than the ones last night. not quite as well organized or strong. but still there are some strong storms, some severe weather in this band of heavy norms -- thunderstorms from arkansas up through illinois and up into lake michigan. moving into michigan right now. the state of michigan. and just around the detroit and chicago area. so that will continue to move on east. and you say, oh, we have a good chance of rain here. well, the whole system is getting kind of detached and a little less organized and as it moves farther east, it will not dissipate completely, but lose a

lot of its strength. once it hits the mountains here. so it won't be as generous a rain maker for us as it is out to the west. let's look at what happened today. today the big news was the temperatures. we didn't break any records. the record high was 88 degrees. that's not the official recording site. it only made it to 86. i say only, it was a great day. a trace of precipitation, that was before dawn. at the airport. 1/100th of an inch downtown at the science center and temperatures right now, we had a little typo earlier, it's 68 at the airport, not 58. and 71 downtown. really mild for this time of year, this time of evening. 66 on the board walk. westminster still around 70. in the 60's in far western maryland right now. these clouds that are going by, this is all debris clouds that have sbn spent, they're not producing any rain but they've

blown off the tops of all these big storms that have been out west. and here are the storms this evening, all lined up in the warm, humid air mass running out ahead of this cold front. actually it's kind of a double structure out here to the west. the storm has s becoming a little more disorganized and by the time the center of the storm moves up toward canada, the front kind of swings our way and it will lose a lot of its energy by the time it gets here. the rain chances believe it or not after seeing all this for two days will be pretty slim for us. overnight tonight we stay dry, mostly clear. light southwest winds. temperatures climb tomorrow into the 80's once again, upper 80's in some cases around the area. couple places might even make it close to 90 degrees. during the day tomorrow. and the humidity will will be up a little bit, too. so the discomfort level goes up. mostly sunny, especially in the morning. some clouds drifting in toward the afternoon. brief shower after sunset, a possibility. that's when that front gets close. 83 to 87 for the high. south to southwest winds at

seven to 12 miles an hour. statewide forecast, might be some thunderstorms, maybe scattered out in the mountains to the west. highs only 80 there. mid to upper 80's here. small craft advisories on the bay, south winds gusting to 25. and our future cast shows what's left of those storms out west, just coming through tomorrow night, a few sprinkles, a little shower, we'll see a few clouds on tuesday and wednesday a cold front comes in. but it looks like on that a lot of rain may be south of us. so only 75 on tuesday. 68 on wednesday. a small chance for a shower, again the emphasis might be south of that, but that's another front coming in. slightly cooler air. then we'll be up near 70 for a couple of days, with a much higher chance for some rain next weekend. could be some good storms in there. we'll have to wait and see. >> all right, thank you. a few city police officers hit the la crosse field today to help out middle school athletes across baltimore. the officers and academy

recruits joined the parks and people foundation to host a la crosse training clinic for the athletes. the students got expert instructions from police academy instructors. the police commissioner says the lessons learned today are simply invaluable. >> teamwork, hard work gets the job done. and if you screw up, there's a penalty to pay for it. but you right yourself, learn from it, get back out on the field and try again. >> he says he hopes the students can apply these lessons off the field as well. big passion of his and you were there, too. >> the greyhounds' record is perfect. the way it happened this weekend, they go out to a place where it's safe to say they struggled, they come back, they're feeling pretty good. we'll check in with the greyhounds on their maybe road to perfection coming up next in sports. loses 9 happen 2. but then -- 9-2. but again they won the series so hopefully you're happy with that? >> no. i'm not. no. we had a chance to step on them today and we didn't do it and nobody in that clubhouse feels that way. it's not a mathematic thing. when you're playing a baseball game and you're coming out here, i'm not going to take you any solace just because of how we might have done here in the past. no. we want to get where we want to go, you have to keep grinding that out. our guys know that and i think they're frustrated and i'm happy to get that feeling. >> happy with the frustration. the dodgers celebrate jackie robinson day with former players whose lives were shaped by robinson with ceremonial first pitches and the game was incredible in the ninth. tied at 8-8. guzman thought it was foul. everybody did. except a.j. he will sis -- ellis. he starts the triple play. you see the ball came back into fair territory. pad res' manager, he never saw it that way. i think he left early.

bottom nine then. d-gordon walks it off for l.a. single with the bases loaded, ends the game. the dodgers win it 5-4 they are now 9-1 on the season. the greyhounds men's la crosse team returned home this afternoon with a perfect record in tact and a monkey off their backs. the hounds now 11-0 had not won a game ever before in denver and considering the university of denver has turned into a considerable program, and it plays host to the corns tourney as well, it's kind of a big deal. >> they traveled out to denver and finally got a win. whether or not it was denver or another opponent out there, that's something that's alluded us and knowing that we're going back in two weeks and we have the ability to win a big game out there, i think that puts a lot of confidence in our guys. >> so look at the remaining schedule for loyala. at hoe batter this coming saturday. then -- hobart this coming saturday. then home to johns hopkins to end the regular season. back to denver for the first weekend in may for the a.c.c. tourney and a trip to the ncaa.

the hound so hot right now they might jump up to number one in the poll that comes out on monday. lee evans was one of the nicest people to ever wear a ravens uniform and absolutely stand-up guy but his legacy with the ravens has little room for sentiment. good thing for him then that he gets a fresh start. evans, who could have sent the ravens to the super bowl, had he hung on to this pass in foxboro, will sign a one-year contract with jacksonville on monday. ravens' general manager had considered bringing ev abs -- evans back on a new contract after waiving him last month. probably best for the psyche of everyone involved that evans has a new home. the nhl playoff series between pittsburgh and philadelphia has devolved in the point where life imitates art. crazy amounts of offense encompassed by nonstop violence. something tells me the ratings will soar. penguins took the lead in all three games so far and lost all of them. first period, jordan staal puts pittsburgh up 1-0. they combine for six

first-period goals. they also combined for 158 penalty minutes. you know it's a free for all when the stars get to shrugging. crosby goes to the ice. then letang and timonen not headed for "dancing with the stars" any time soon. a chippie series, the first two games. turned into this. occasionally they played and when they did, phillies scored a lot. then they did this again. a lot. fliers won 8-4. they lead the series 3-0 which should measuresfully come to an end soon. please stay with us for another check of the forecast right after this.
