in our newsroom with the latest on the controversy surrounding the police detective, but we will begin with david collins live at police headquarters. >> prosecutors declined to disclose the cause of death or any evidence, for that matter, associated with the case, but sources tell 11 news that she was asphyxiated and that michael johnson was seen carrying a large, rubber-based container to his car around the time of her disappearance. the man arrested and indicted in connection with the death of phylicia barnes is a longtime family friend michael johnson, the former boyfriend of her older sister. baltimore city state's attorney greg bernstein suggested she was murdered in baltimore but provided few other details about the case. >> we believe we've got the right guy. >> the case attracted national attention. in december 2010, the 16-year- old honors student from north carolina spend the holidays with family members in baltimore and mysteriously disappeared december 28.

a year later, her body was found floating in the susquehanna river. the state's attorney declined to discuss the cause of death or what type of evidence they have to support the indictment, but according to a source, because of debt is this fixation. the source also says johnson was seen taking a large rubber- based content to his car around the time she was reported missing. reached by phone, her father said the family is rejoicing over the news of the arrest. barnes' uncle thank god for the state. relatives suspected johnson from the beginning. they knew him well. he went on family vacations with them. >> i would hope that he would do the right thing. if it was him, tell the truth. tell the truth and give the lisa's family some type of closure. >> felicia's brother wears her picture around his neck. he says a stranger give it to his mom the first week she disappeared. >> little stuff to keep her in our memory. i wear this every day, and it

never comes off. >> meanwhile, johnson remains locked up in central booking. that which would -- the indictment which led to his arrest is under lock and key. >> prosecutors rest to judgment. he fights the suspension earlier this week of the lead detective in the barns killings in unrelated incident. he says prosecutors were afraid of losing credibility in the case and arrested johnson before the case fell apart. >> i think that's at best, what they had was a circumstance case. >> again, the question of credibility stems from the suspension this week of the head detective. lead investigative reporter jane miller has that story live from the newsroom. >> detective daniel nicholson is suspended and under investigation. he allegedly misused city resources and led an unauthorized made in an attempt to locate his own 15-year-old daughter. he is accused of using his police powers along with five

other officers. to force his way into a baltimore apartment sunday night. one of the residents filed a complaint of aggravated assault in connection with the authorized rate. his daughter was reported missing in baltimore county and was considered a run away. state's attorney is involved in the investigation. he denies questions about nicholson hurts the phylicia barnes murder case. >> the matter is a completely separate matter. and he's barely under investigation. if i thought for a moment that any of the allegations involving him even remotely impacted on this case, we would not have brought it. >> the state's attorney also denied there was anything unusual about the timing of the indictment in the murder case, right on the heels of the suspension. prosecutors will have to hope the work of other investigators in the murder case overcomes the integrity questions that now surround the detective. >> thank you.

taken into account. >> we should point out it was a lot more of a calm day in court than yesterday with the fireworks and drama, but the judge made it clear she would not allow any of the testimony that was given by the elected become in this case yesterday. however, she did point out that if the victim wanted to come back to court and testify, she would allow it. coming off the shocking and very brief testimony of the alleged victim wednesday, where he told the court he did not want to testify and wanted the charges dropped, judge pamela white ruled thursday that the few sentences he muttered out, which were picked up by a recording device, would not be allowed into evidence. testimony thursday came from a wide range of witnesses, including a crime scene technician, a journalist from the baltimore jewish times, who

exclusively interviewed the brothers about the incident, and a neighbor who says that he witnessed the initial interaction between at least one of the brothers before the alleged assault. however, when cross-examined, the same never admitted that he originally told police right after the incident that he could not identify the people in the car. the neighbor also testified that he heard who he thought was eli ~ teenager "you do not belong here." but the defense pointed out in a statement to police that he told them "you should not be in this neighborhood." the brothers are accused of beating an african american teenager while on neighborhood patrol. they claim it was in self- defense as they were confronting what they thought was a known suspect in the park heights neighborhood. the brothers are charged with false imprisonment, second- degree assault and use of a deadly weapon, all misdemeanors. they will be back in court

tomorrow for a now third day of testimony. we are live outside of the mitchell courthouse today. >> tonight, police are investigating the death of a 46- year-old man in west baltimore. authorities say around 11:00 last night, they found a man in the 4500 block of harlem avenue suffering from gunshot wounds. he was transported to the hospital but later died. no word at this hour on a possible motive or suspects. meanwhile, an arrest in a series of cell phone deaths on and around the university of baltimore campus. police say the suspects approached students asking to use their phones to make an emergency call, and once it was handed over, they would just take off. we are told the rest is linked to a least one incident reported but could be connected to others. anyone with information is asked to call the university of baltimore police at 410-837- 5520. >> tonight, the secret service admits it has expanded its investigation and is checking

into whether employees hired strippers and prostitutes in advance of president obama's visit last year to el salvador. yet the latest on the prostitution scandal from our washington bureau. >> the allegations are reportedly being made by unnamed sources, and at this point, the secret service cannot say whether they are credible. >> the latest allegations -- the secret service agents working in advance of the president is a trip to san salvador last year had a night of partying at a strip club that included paying for sexual favors in the club's vip room and taking escort's back to their hotel room. >> while this is an ongoing investigation, we will not, more broadly and certainly not on rumors and speculation that appear in the media. >> the report from a seattle station quotes an unidentified subcontractor who claims he worked with the president was the advance team and join the agents at the club. allegations were said to be confirmed by the strip club owner who has not been identified.

>> a casino license has been awarded to rocky gab lodge, part of an effort to turn around the resort which has been dealing with problems in recent years. the decision has been made in annapolis and will go before the state board of public works for final review. >> a group of international visitors made the rounds at a local middle school in anne arundel county appeared more than a dozen iraqi educational leaders toward a middle school and spent the better part of their visit meeting with an having lunch with students. the delegation was in town as guest of a group called the global child nutrition foundation. it was also a chance for anne arundel county to showcase its nutrition program. >> the iraqi ministry of education wanted to restart school eating in a particularly the elementary schools in iraq.

that rainfall totals here were not too bad. it is still a little drier than normal, so some shower activity every couple of days is not a bad thing. 3.74 inches of rain came down on this day in 1937. that is the record amount of rain for the 26 day of april. fifth straight day with temperatures averaging out cooler than normal. that is not happened since the beginning of november. we had a six-day stretch of cooler temperatures, it has been a while since we had this extended stretch of cool weather. made today helped to lower the pollen count, but it still in the high range. north with the pennsylvania line, temperatures are in the low 60's. they-60's @ chris field. little warmer down here. -- mid-60's @ chris field. you might hear a little thunder,

and these guys will clear out, and the wins will kick in, and temperatures will drop by morning. some of the northwest suburbs may be in the 30's. 40's in downtown baltimore. the air is even warmer and more summer-like, atlanta, the carolinas, 70's and 80's. that is where these clouds will possibly produce some severe thunderstorms as the front works its way down. but high-pressure comes in behind the front, so friday looks like a real nice day. it will be windy, and temperatures will be cooler than normal, but it will look nice outside with all the sunshine. saturday, back into the clouds, and early afternoon, rain moves back in. could be cold enough for somewhat slow or sneak to move in some of the highest elevations -- what slow or sneak -- wet snow or sleet to move in. nice spring day friday. the wins will be kicking in, and a small craft advisory on the
