nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: president obama spoke at the base where seal team 6 took off to kill osama bin laden on the president's orders. >> the goal i set to defeat act and deny it a chance to rebuild is within our reach. >> reporter: he met with troops and gave them credit along with his drone campaign for killing 20 of bin laden's top 30 commanders. >> we have been able to decimate the ranks of al qaeda, and a year ago we were able to finally bring osama bin laden to justice. >> reporter: the president had flown to afghanistan secretly overnight. to sign a new 10 year treaty with afghan president karzei. u.s. forces will focus only on the fight against what is left of al qaeda.

secretary of state hillary clinton arrived in china. her schedule talks with officials on economic issues could be affected by the case of a blind activist who has now left u.s. protection. a u.s. official says that the chinese dissident, chen guangcheng left the em ball see in beijing. the official says mr. cheng is at a facility where he will be reunited with his family. chen, who ran afall of local government officials for exposing force aid bore sluns and other abuses, escaped from house arrest last month. elsewhere, five men under arrest in an alleged not blow up a bridge in ohio. federal authorities described the men as anarchists, angry at corporate america. they were unaware an fbi informant was involved in the plan to bomb a bridge linking two cleveland suburbs. a prosecutor says the plotters obtained what they thought were

explosives. the beginning of may brought may day protests from coast to coast yesterday. police fired tear gas to disburg demonstrators in oakland, california, demanding an end to income inequality battled with police. there were some arrests. they were less violent than the ones last fall when the occupy movement was at the peak. other stories making news, "early today" in america, video of a horrific attack in a massachusetts high school, has led to two arrests. prosecutors have charged the teen attacker with felony assault charges, but also charged the student who recorded the violent ambush. charges against him include wire tap violation, disorderly conduct and aggravated assault. both have pled not guilty. the lights went out in upstate new york when a car crashed in a national grid substation. a session of albany lost power

after the vehicle collided with one car and careened in the power plant. power was restored shortly afterwards. the driver suffered minor injuries. finally, dropping the kid off at grandma's house wasn't a good idea for one florida child. the 7-year-old's grandparents were arrested after they were spotted towing the child in her toy car at 5 to 10 miles per hour. they both face child endangerment charges while the grandfather is charged with driving under the influence and with a suspended license. oh, boy, is right. for a look at weather here is bill karins, he was the weather channel forecast. someone won't be getting grandparents of the year. >> you trust the baby center and grandpa is drinking and driving, towing the kid. good morning, severe thunderstorms took the headlines yesterday in the weather world it's may we expect the tornadoes once again to be widespread.

yesterday, 15 tornado reports, most of those were from the same thunderstorm complex that went from central illinois in areas of central indiana, notice all there were eight reports, a lot of them the same complex and same tornado, nonetheless, that stormy convenient actually evolved in a lot of large hail through indiana and ohio, a couple tornados in minnesota and iowa. little minor damage was done we didn't see fatalities or anything like that. this morning left over with a thunderstorm from yesterday, they now exited minneapolis, des moines, the worst of the thunderstorms it looks like has past to the east. look at the radar on the backside of this, redevelopment just outside of omaha, that may come through and give you another punch in des moines in an hour or two. will weaken as it heads toward chicago and milwaukee, there will be rain for the morning commute. a moderate risk, the red color, widespread damaging wind and hail, isolated tornadoes near omaha, and in areas of central
