smell the coffee in annapolis. >> a bit of sticker shock for residents, taxes will be going up. >> we will have a session on may 14 and may 15, a two-day session. we will come together and shake hands, get done, shake hands before really, and all will be well. >> lawmakers in annapolis are looking to a special session to get rid of the doomsday budget, which calls for $500 million in budget cuts. governor o'malley insisted that a framework in place before he called for the session. the original session ended when lawmakers failed to come to an agreement. leaders are expected to meet with the governor tomorrow to discuss specific plans. opponents of same-sex marriage have reached a milestone in trying to change the new

maryland law. shelton dutes is live in south baltimore with more on the efforts to put the issue on the ballot this november. >> so far, opponents have collected more than half the petitions they need to get this referendum on the ballot in november. the fight is not over yet. they still have to get another 30,000 signatures before the end of the summer. ever since governor martin o'malley signed same sex marriage into law, this pastor has been a busy man. his efforts appear to be paying off. he is the executive director of the maryland marriage alliance. so far he has collected more than half of that necessary petitions to put the same sex marriage referendum on the november ballot. >> it is not a simple experiment. this is something that has been foundational since society began. >> he says the clear message is,

maryland is not going to sit down and the voters are going to have their say. all around the state. >> more than 30,000 signatures have been filed, but that number must double in order for it to get on the ballot. they are confident they will get the petitions. >> we spend copious amounts of time planning and organizing in making sure this will work. we have a great process in place. people have been trained how to fill out petitions correctly. >> they may be successful doing it, but one way or the other, we are going to be ready to win on january 1, 2013, when the bill comes into effect. we will benefit goes to referendum, or if they do not get the signatures. >> opponents need 60,000 signatures before the end of

june for the referendum to show up on the november ballot. shelton dutes, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the war of indycar engines could come to a screeching halt for this year's grand prix if major problems cannot be worked out. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake says no more cash will be funneled to the labor day event. the series is reportedly looking to replace the organizer because the company missed several planning deadlines. the mayor did say the city remains in negotiations with the group and a new racing contract is still on the table. while the dollar getting siphoned off, money is tight in other areas of the city budget. some are sounding off about why they believe things will be shortchanged. >> taxpayers night at city hall is kind of like an open mike night. the big topic is how the proposed city budget could have

have less discipline problems and more learning gets done. >> taxpayers brought up the mayor's proposal to close braque centers -- to close shrek centers and turned others into after-school programs. >> if we fail to deal with the issues, they are concerned about strong schools and recreation centers. if we do not deal with that, as opposed to becoming super heroes, we have the potential to become super villains. >> mayor stephanie rawlings- blake has called the rec center restructuring plan a tough choice, but the right thing to do for baltimore's future. kai reed, wbal-tv 11 news. >> bonds are coming back to anne arundel county and schools to the tune of $12 million. the town council decided it would add that amount to next year's budget. this comes nearly a week after the state school board determined the district had been underfunded. school officials will not

specify what the money will be used for, but say it will be put to good use. >> man is behind bars after howard k. police say he wielded a blood filled syringe as he robbed a local pharmacy, and may have been tainted with the hiv virus. he is locked up at the howard county detention center. officials say they used surveillance video to link blessing to two robberies, the most recent on centennial lane at a cvs. he made off with $27,000 worth of medications. no one was exposed to the blood, and the pharmacist was not injured. we are hearing from inside the department social services office during a frantic 911 call. baltimore police a mother stabbed her 8-month-old daughter while on a supervised visit. workers tried to intervene. >> i cannot hear you.

paramedics are on the way now. >> investigators say 29-year-old kenisha thomas was the one who attacked her baby, named pretty diamond. thomas now faces several charges, including attempted murder. her daughter is expected to survive. >> new gingrich is officially out of the race for the white house and is throwing his support behind mitt romney. this afternoon the former speaker suspended his campaign for the republican nomination. he fell short in florida. he never regained momentum. >> now to some sad news about one of our favorite baltimore marathoners. john petrovick has died. he learned he had a tumor while training for the baltimore marathon back in 2008, and his

vow to keep running inspired many in this newsroom to ignore the excuses and hit the road. including 11 news reporter kate amara. >> all i can do is keep my chin up. when you are facing something bigger than you, you just have to keep going at it. >> for john petrovick, that meant running through it. waging a courageous battle with an aggressive and dangerous kind of cancer since his first brain tumor in 2008. >> pretty much immediately after surgery, i wanted to run the baltimore marathon. that would be the marker for me that i was not going to let this affect me at all. >> and so with surgery, chemo, radiation, he kept running races, raising thousands of dollars for a brain cancer research, and inspiring thousands along the way,

including his world-famous narrow sojourn -- is world famous neurosurgeon. the doctor was not a runner before he met john petrovick. >> he had a passion for life. he was truly compassionate. he lives with me forever. >> doctor and patient came running buddies. they even took on the baltimore half marathon together. >> he had such a power. he would just look into my eyes and say you can do this. if i can do this, you can do it. >> but every race has a finish line. this winter, the brain cancer came back again, and this time it was a fight john petrovick would not win. he died over the weekend, just 28 years old. >> he is no longer with us physically, but his spirit lives with us. >> that kind of spirit is going to keep me going.

now he thinks it is just worthless paper. the help he saw from american -- from a company called american home relief foundation never arrive, and the company thought would represent him, did not. he says once he filled out the paperwork and since then his money, he got the runaround. >> believe me, i thought i just lost everything. >> dozens contacted the better business bureau, complaining about the company. the customers are from as far away as the state of washington and new york. one person claims he paid 1909 $5 for loan modification. -- $1995.

>> he says he was never able to reach the attorney. we reached him at his rockville home. he later called an agreed to meet with us at his office. >> i understand why some people would get mad, because they see my name. >> perry, a virginia attorney, calls himself a minority investor in the company. >> you had no idea that the people who work for american home relief for telling people that you would be their attorney could >> i had no idea. >> he appears in the scripps use by sales people the company calls modification specialist. >> we are founded by real estate attorney michael a. perry. they became worried when they found out the company was charging up-front fees to struggling homeowners in states where it was illegal.

>> they are going to come for them and put all of us in jail. >> they used my good name to sign up other people that are losing their house, and i will not stand for it. >> he says homeowners were told perry would be returning. perry claims he did not find out about it until homeowners started contacting him. >> what did you do at that point? >> i came in and started to look at the materials and ask what is going on. that is what i found out that they were portraying like i was a part of their business, or that they were part of my law practice, which is not the case. >> perry said he closed american home relief foundation in january of last year. two months later, his law firm was in the same business. that is when the state of maryland started taking notice. >> they started offering two% loan modifications guaranteed.

he was running late on modification operation. >> the state issued a cease and desist order in march and find perry and associates a half million dollars because the business was unlicensed and was charging illegal up-front fees. perry is challenging the findings. he believes his law firm is exempt. >> not one maryland resident has complained about what we have done. this is strictly about whether a license is required. >> as for american home relief foundation, in november, new hampshire issued a cease and desist order, although the business had already closed. the alleged violation, operating without a broker license and charging illegal up-front fees. >> james is still struggling to keep his home. he still believes michael a. perry was his attorney. he wants his money back, but does not think that will happen.

tied at one piece in the closing minutes of the second overtime. jr. see out was called the greatest team made a guy could ever have -- junior seau was called the greatest team make a guy could ever have. his girlfriend found the former nfl linebacker in his san diego area home with an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound that took his life. police continue to investigate his death as a possible suicide. he did not leave a note, but did send text to his ex-wife and through -- and three children that read "i love you." he is the eighth player from his team to die before the age of 45. he was 43. commissioner roger goodell has a different point of view. he suspended him for a year with no pay.

the identified vilma as the most heavily involved, allegedly offering teammates $10,000 for knocking out a quarterback. all four players plan to appeal the decision. roger goodell will hear the appeal. lacrosse team season ends with a loss in the semifinals. umbc cannot put home field advantage to good use. they beat albany just two weeks ago in a wild over time finish. they did not play that game at churchill downs. that is where they will run the kentucky derby this coming saturday afternoon. the derby will feature a field of 24 cents.
