>> let's get to tom tasselmyer. >> we an the edge of some of summer-like weather. warm conditions spreading in from the west. you can see the rain is stretching right across baltimore city. the severe nature of these storms has been lessening with each passing minute. there was a severe thunderstorm warning that expired at 10:45. the worst of the weather is over, but you will get some heavy downpours. this may be just a preview of what we will have to deal with again tomorrow. >> a woman is dead, and another critically injured after a shooting at a church. not far from the scene, police found the body of a man you had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the shooting happened after 5:50

this afternoon. -- 5:15 this afternoon. >> police are still trying to figure out if any of the victims are connected. they're trying to determine why someone would walk into a church and start shooting people. they are usually the last place anybody would ever worry about their safety. but this church became the scene of a deadly shooting. police say a custodian at st. peter's episcopal church made the gruesome discovery inside of the church office. >> at this point, we do not know how long the bodies were there. we do know that one was transported to shock trauma. >> it has to be someone very disturbed. i do not know what would take you to that point.

>> swat team members sitting up and prepared to enter the church. no one else was found and the church, but k-9 units and helicopters searched the area for hours. police eventually found a man's body and a gun at nearby in a wooded area. >> the very real possibility that this was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> this is a peaceful neighborhood. it is pretty crazy. >> police had the avenue blocked off for hours. it creighton obstacle for people to get along. >> i did -- it created an obstacle for people to get home. >> the church is supposed to be a sanctuary. it is terrible. >> none of the victims' names or ages have been released because officials are still trying to notify their family members. >> a split for siblings inside

the courtroom. a judge finds one of the werdesheim brothers guilty. the other walks away free. they were accused of assaulting an african american teenager and holding him against his well. the judge found avi not guilty and eli guilty of second-degree assault and false imprisonment. >> we are happy his brother was acquitted of all accounts. we look forward to continuing the advocacy for eli. >> we were willing to let the system works. we have to believe in the system. >> he has been the street talking no-nonsense police commissioner for five years, but tonight, fred bealefeld iii says

another life is calling him. he will retire to spend more time with his family. we have more on his pending departure. >> his career started as a cadet back in 1981. he served as the department's top cops in november of 2007. baltimore's top cop with a passionate way with words? " some knuckleheads firing indiscriminate shots. we will risk our lives to take these people off the streets. >> after 31 years with the baltimore city police department, fred bealefeld iii says he is stepping down. he said in a statement, this was a very tough decision for me and my family. it is the right time for me to bring my career to a close. he goes on to say, i am looking forward to enjoying in retirement with my family and close friends. >> he did the best to straighten

mason university is taking issue with the budget process in maryland. she poured over decades of reports by the state's spending affordability committee. this panel of legislators and civilians make recommendations on how much the state budget to grow each year. her research finds that the committee has failed to keep spending in check for 30 years. she discovered members ignore their own guidelines and operate more like a spending target than a spending cap. >> they would set the criteria for spending growth. when that amount did not fit with what they wanted to spend, they found another way to justify it. >> presiding officers considered the committee a good budget balancing tool. she recommends abolishing the committee and putting the plan in place that limits budget growth to the sum of inflation and population. >> governor o'malley is reportedly thrown around the idea of creating a panel to

setting expanded gambling in maryland. he already said that he is considering a special session this summer to address the measure that fell short earlier this year. it would have legalized table games. a sluggish economy is forcing more teachers to stay in the classroom and delayed their retirement. the district will hire fewer schoolteachers, roughly 400 new teachers will sign contracts for the fall. those already in the job could face transfers. those changes will likely mean the need for more teachers in elementary schools. baltimore county is the nation's 25th largest school district. >> a another former foe is lining up behind mitt romney. today was michele bachmann stern. she attended a campaign rally today in portsmouth, va., to

you will eventually end up back on 83 north. overnight closures for remain in place until monday. as for the single left lane, it will stay closed until construction is completed. if you would ever feared being next to a big truck and having its cargo crashed onto the roadway, you may want to avert your eyes. lumber was thrown all over the beltway after a tractor-trailer overturned. we were over the area around lunchtime. the beltway was shut down for a couple of hours. there are no reports of injuries. no word on what caused the crash. for people did suffer injuries and this accident involving a school bus just before 3:30 this afternoon. it collided with another vehicle in the 9800 block. the bus driver, the driver of the car, and two students were all taken to northwest hospital. no word on who is at fault. >> the mother of yeardley love

has filed another lawsuit this week. this time against the school's athletic director and the state of virginia. the wrongful death lawsuit coincides with today's two-year anniversary of for daughter's murder. george huguely was found guilty of second-degree murder in february. she says the state and the athletic department ignored george huguely's erratic behavior prior to death. the humane society is now joining those looking to fight back against last week's ruling in the maryland about pit bulls breeds. maryland's highest court ruled that people owners can be liable for damages simply based on the breed. >> you may not know that last year, more than 8000 people went to the university of maryland shock trauma center with critical injuries. most of them survived. the hospital paid tribute to the men and women who work so hard

to make that happen. this is what shock trauma does every single day. more than 8500 people arrive each year in need of life-saving critical care. 97% of them are saved. >> i am happy to be alive. great doctors. great response team. >> the 25-year-old was nearly decapitated by a metal wire hanging across a dirt trail in charles county. his windpipe and esophagus were torn in half. he had less than 1% chance of survival. >> he was desperately ill when he got year. -- here. it requires us to stretch to get him fixed. >> our 2011 shock trauma heroes.

high temperature is here and along the coastal areas were significantly cooler, but the storms were blossoming in that summer-like air. we did manage to sneak in a 77- degree day. the airport -- we had a third of an inch of rain when the storm had just rolled through. you can see it is still cooler along the coastal areas, 50's there, 60's around baltimore. 70's around western maryland. stores will continue to generate and track to the east. -- storms will continue to generate and track to the east. that is what the potential is there for strong and severe storms.

the severe storms prediction center is indicating a slight chance for severe storms in the midwest, but also for a good chunk of the mid-atlantic, centered around baltimore. friday begins with clouds and fog. as we get some sunshine late morning, middle part of the day, temperatures will rapidly warm. that leads to a round of afternoon and evening of thunderstorms. it looks like the bulk of that will be added there -- out of here for the weekend. morning clouds and fog, 59 to 64 degrees. partly cloudy with an afternoon storm. on the day, waves are a foot. when the storms develop, the waves to be a lot rougher. thunderstorm in the mountains tomorrow, may be a lingering shower on saturday. a 20% chance of a shower in the morning on the eastern shore.
