is stepping down. he said another life is calling him. he will retire. jennifer franciotti is live with why he decided to call it quits. >> he has been the top cop since 2007. after 31 years, he says it is time to move on. in a statement, the mayor said bealefeld is retiring effective august 1. bealefeld said this was a tough decision but this is the right time for me to bring my career to a close. he says, i'm looking forward to enjoying retirement with my family and close friends. one is surprised by the announcement. >> i thought at least an externally in the crime fighting category that the police department was doing well. internally, they had their issues.

it was becoming more and more difficult. >> the mayor issued a statement saying she is saddened by his decision but she respects it and a national search will begin immediately. reporting live, jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a woman remains in critical condition after a double shooting at a church. we have an exclusive look at the scene. sky team 11 was above st. peter's episcopal church on thursday evening as emergency crews tended to the victims. two women were found shot in the office. one was flown to shock trauma. police found a man's body and a gun not far from the church. >> we are looking into the possibility that this was a self-inflicted gunshot wound at this man may have been involved in some white. >> police have not released the names of any of the victims.

two brothers, two separate verdicts. the judge found avi werdesheim not guilty on all counts. eli werdesheim faces up to 10 years in prison. >> the governor is considering the idea to create a panel to study gambling in maryland. the governor has said he is considering a special session later this year to address the measure. it would report a sixth casino to maryland. the nfl off-season has not started but the ravens are without a key member of their defense. terrell suggs is out. he will undergo surgery next

see on the beltway during the week. this happened during the middle of the day. a tractor-trailer overturned thursday afternoon in arbutus. the truck lost its entire load. this happen before 1:00 p.m. near washington boulevard. traffic was backed up for more than a mile. the highway reopened in time for the afternoon rush. the northbound lanes of the j.f.x. will be closed. it began last night at 10:00 p.m. traffic took about 20 minutes to get through the detour. fall the detour onto 28th street and end up back on falls road. the detours will continue until monday until construction is complete.
