he admitted the bank lost billions of dollars due to risk gentlemen bets made on his watch a practice he encouraged. nbc tracie potts joins us from washington with those details. good morning. >> reporter: some analysts say dimon is unlikely to lose his job because despite what's going on with the company right now he's being considered a near genius on wall street and many investors won't want to navigate this without him. today jpmorgan chase ceo jamie dimon faces shareholders for the first time since admitting risky hedging led to a $2 billion loss. >> wild still earn a lot of money this quarter. >> reporter: his job could be on today's agenda whether to split the company's chair and ceo. dimon holds both positions. elizabeth warren a massachusetts senate candidate who designed the protection bureau said dimon should give up his board seat at new york's federal reserve.

>> this is about accountability. at some point you have to be accountable and say you don't get to be in a position of public trust when you're engaging in practices that you yourself describe as sloppy and stupid. >> reporter: the bank lost 12% of its value in five days but analysts say it will survive. >> one one thousandth of the value of this bank is $2 billion. doesn't mean a thing. they will earn something like 15 to 30 billion. >> reporter: on theview president obama emphasized this time taxpayers were not left holding the bag. >> you could have a bank not as strong, not as profitable and we may have had to step in. >> reporter: the senate banking committee here on capitol hill was already looking into wall street reform whether it was working. now they added jpmorgan chase to their agenda. >> people are talking about the

issue of same sex marriage particularly since president obama's announcement that he now supports it. a poll you found 67 of those surveyed thought the president made that decision mostly for political reasons. only 24% said it was mostly because he thinks it's right. the poll also found 38% believe gay couples should be allowed to marry. 24% supported same sex civil unions, 33% said there should be no legal recognition. same sex marriage is sure to remain a critical issue in the run for the white house. brian mooar reports. >> reporter: at a campaign fundraiser with gays and lesbians in new york, president obama described but didn't dwell on his support for same sex marriage rights. >> i want everybody treated fairly in this country. it doesn't weaken families it strengthens families. president obama the first gay president. over the weekend presumptive republican nominee mitt romney delighted christian fundamentalists at liberty university by defining marriage as -- >> the relationship between one man and one woman. >> reporter: romney seemed less than eager to re-engage on the issue with the christian broadcasting network. >> how important it is to people a few months from now time will tell but my position is out there for people to see. and hopefully i can attract the kind of support i need. >> reporter: the obama campaign is kicking up the primary season attacks on romney and his time with bain capital. mitt romney is firing back saying he and bain were job creators not job killers. a primary season skirmish now primetime in the fight for the white house. brian mooar, nbc news,

washington. and now here's a look at some other stories making news on "early today" in america. in florida police arrested 31 men who thought they were going to meet children for sexual encounters. instead, they were undercover officers. police say it shows the battle against online predators is far from over. one of the suspects allegedly brought his own child to the home. in illinois a school bus full of children slammed into the back of a big rig. the bus driver and a student were seriously hurt. ten other kids suffered minor injuries in the crash along interstate 55. the fifth and sixth graders were heading back from a field trip to the state capitol. in georgia a wallaby is being given medical treatment usually reserved for humans. a chiropractor is hoping to save the animal after it suffered some fractures. it's believed it may have injured its neck after running

wednesday afternoon to clear things out. you can see the heavier, steadier rains up through northern new england all of maine and new hampshire and vermont, the downpours are now around d.c. and those will swing through the delmarva region through philadelphia, baltimore and new york city as we go throughout morning. cold front back in the midwest, late this afternoon it could get some thunderstorms on this. maybe a few isolated strong storms around chicago, lower morgueses of lake michigan and some rain down here in south texas and these storms are heading off the coast. they have been weakening. not that much heavy rain left here in corpus christi. gorgeous conditions in the intermountain west. now here's a look outside your window. pittsburgh, pennsylvania, 75 and cincinnati at 79. houston, texas, 81. a lot of warm air. stakes a little bit hot with a temperature of 88 degrees.

clemens the star witness, brian mcnamee testified he injected clemens with steroids about eight times. he contradicts clemens claims before congress that he never took performance-enhancing drugs. a security supervisor at new jersey newark airport for 20 years has been arrested on charges of identity theft. the illegal immigrant from nigeria used the name of a murder victim and passed years of airport background security checks. and a russian rocket lifted off today headed for low-earth orbit. an american astronaut and two cosmonauts are aboard which are scheduled to dock with the international space station on thursday. and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,695 after dropping 125 points yesterday. the s&p fell 15. nasdaq tumbled 31.

overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei lost 73 points but in hong kong, the hang seng added 159. an agreement between opposing political parties in greece is looking increasingly unlikely. more talks are scheduled for today the country's leftest leader vows to oppose any kind of bailout. that has global investors worried that greece could back out on its debt payment and drop the euro zone currency driving up rates. driving up lending rates elsewhere. europe's debt drama and jpmorgan chase $2 billion blunder weighed down bank stocks helping to push the s&p to its lowest close since february. euro zone fears continue to spill over on to oil prices which fell to near $94 a barrel overseas this morning. after the "closing bell" groupon shot up after posting its first quarterly profit. it closed 20% higher in regular trade.

coty withdrew its offer to buy avon saying the deadline passed. best buy rose on news that the company's founder's chairman is stepping down after investigation revealed he had a relationship with a female employee. yahoo! ticked higher on the resignation of its ceo amid a resume padding scandal. ahead of facebook ace ipo the company will raise its price range from 28 to $35 a share from $34 to $38. and if you're skeptical about the social network's staying you're not alone. a poll said half of americans think facebook is just a passing fad. coming up the thunder drain the lakers, the nats land the padres and the heat lose one of their big three.

good morning. if you're just waking up this is "early today." in sports last night in the nba playoffs the sixers fought off a late game surge by the celtics tying their series at one apiece. here's nbc's fred roggin with a look at all your sports headlines. good morning. the sixers are not your typical eighth seed after knocking out the bulls. phillies grabbed home court advantage from the celtics. game two in boston picking it up late in the fourth, the celtics were up one. holliday from downtown, game high. boston would answer on the other end, ray allen for three and got it. celtics back on top. but the lead was short-lived. turner drove and got the tough lay-up to fall. the youngsters got it done. the sixers won it 82-81. close game to an absolute blow-out the thunder rolled the lakers. ran the lakers out of the
