farmer's markets together, we're preparing foods together and actually enjoying that time together. >> so what are we making for lunch that's so healthy and good? >> so today -- well, we are going to make just cucumber rolled in ham. it is a really nice fresh easy -- >> take a piece of ham. >> yeah. you just take a piece of ham. >> very lean and thin slice. >> take cucumber, roll it right up. you have to add the ranch sauce. >> low calorie? >> just light ranch. just spread it on -- >> so no bread. >> you don't need the bread. you roll it up and eat it with your fingers. >> any kid can do this for themselves. >> bread's overrated. >> what were you eating before this? >> i would eat at school probably. they serve macaroni and cheese that probably wasn't even cheese. >> look at this. >> your before and after is very cool. this is the boxed up lunch. what else do you put in?
2:51 am
>> then we have normal fresh almonds, very good especially for your heart. then you have grapes and peaches. >> did you like fruit before or have you learned to like it? >> i liked it but we didn't have it that often. we sort of live in that kind of little town. but now they have farmer's markets now. >> so mom, it changed the way you shopped and did everything? >> now they're a part of it. the kids are a part of the planning, they're part of the shopping, they're part of the experience. we're looking at food now as time to spend together and also looking at food as fuel for our body instead of just emotional eating and sitting in front of the tv and eating, or it just being time to eat. >> is this the dessert portion of the program? >> actually, this is more of a breakfast that we love to do. it's the black and blue smoothie. you have blackberries, some sour cream and some blueberries, along with agave nectar which was one of the things that we

definitely learned. it is a lot better and it is just like honey. you can use it just like honey. >> you can add a little cocoa powder if you need to spice it up a little bit. >> it comes out looking great. that's our favorite type. >> this is just a nice snack. >> my daughter is our hummus she puts lots of garlic in it. >> good for both of you. >> congratulations. you showed those guys, honey. good for you. >> thank you. up next, choosing the right wines -- not for you, marshall -- but for me, for your next date. though i'm not going on a date. but first, this is "today" on nbc.

2:56 am
>> so today we invited executive wine editor of "food and wine" to share his best picks for that date with that special or potentially special someone. you're special, ray. we love you. >> what we're doing -- i came up with a bunch of possibilities here. we're going in order of your life. innocence. first date, casual date, all the way to when you're married. first date wine, the idea is you want something that's good that tastes great but you want something you can talk about, that has a little interest. this is a chardonnay from monterey county, california. nice affordable bottle of wine but i pick it in my case because i actually work the harvest there for a couple of years. if i picked this for a date i would be able to talk about it. that way conversation in theory would not die. it is a good chardonnay, affordable, straightforward wine. >> how much is this one? >> guess. at the end. >> next the casual date. kind of moving along in the relationship. something fresh, something
2:57 am
crisp. you can take it on a picnic, crisp, tasty. >> nice. >> then you're moving on to the hot date. you know? getting to the third, fourth date. >> crazy! >> you need a wine that's got -- that's fun. temptation zinfandel, not over the top. >> where does this come from? >> this is from sonoma county, california. juicy, rich, lot of spice to it. this works for you? >> it works for me. >> everything works for him. >> of course it does. >> then you get to the big-time serious important date. that might be you're getting engaged but you got to have champagne. >> or you're going to tell each other you love one another. >> i love you, hodie. >> you can't say you love each other with not-so-good wine. >> you almost said something. >> i did.
2:58 am
it is one of the great champagne labels. >> that's delicious. that's nice and chilled. >> that would make you love someone. >> i would have liked all the other ones even more if they'd have been as killed as this. >> this is -- you learn this as you go through dating experiences. do not serve her non-chilled wine. finally, you're married and you got kids. but you still want to have date night. >> now you can't afford it. >> you can't afford an expensive wine and you don't want something high in alcohol because you have to get up at 6:00 a.m. but you want something with some significance. i chose this frappato which is where my wife and i went for our honeymoon in sicily. >> you're kind of dangerous, aren't you? >> yes, you are. >> sicily. >> your task is to guess which is the most expensive and which is the least expensive. >> on the surface it would seem like this would be the most expensive so he's probably -- let's just go with that. >> hold on. that's what you think is the most. i think the most is going to
2:59 am
be -- i'm going with your italian down at end just because you're rich at the end. >> the answer is the italian -- >> i wish i were rich. >> $20? lovely wine. $155. >> she's right. >> oh, nothing. >> you have expensive taste. >> the cheapest i would think was this one. >> i would say this one. >> you are hot today. you got it. $10. >> what were you thinking? >> that. >> okay. >> next week, we have jimmy fallen in the house. >> we love him. plus, they're back. our guys tell-all panel gathers together and we're going to get you all ready for memorial day weekend. say good-bye! he's got to go to the aspen food and wine thing next month. poor baby. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com
