that have won racing's triple crown. and the question i have for you now, of course, is mile and a half, can he do it? >> he can get the mile and a half, no question in my mind that he can get the mile and a half. but what he's going to have to deal with is a couple of horses that skipped today's race in dullahan and union rags. they're freshening up, waiting to attack. one thing, is he for real, guys. >> on the plus side, i'm not sure any horse is really bred nowadays to go a mile and a half, but he has as good a pedigree as any do. he has the right style, he's tactical, committee show speed, back off the pace. he's fairly lightly raced, which is a big thing when you're talking about three races in five weeks like this. and after this preakness stakes, he has run significantly faster than either dullahan or union rags has ever won in their entire career. so we're going to see i'll have another as a pretty solid favorite in the belmont stakes. >> it's going to be a lot of fun in three weeks. i'll have another will be going for the triple crown.

>> this is 11 news at 6:00. we begin tonight with breaking news. an officer-involved shooting in east baltimore in the 3500 block of elmora avenue. we are hearing that one person was shot and killed. sources say police were responding to reports of a mentally disturbed man. one officer was also taken to the hospital and treated. he is expected to be ok. and now the big story of the day, preakness 2012. a busy dave racing at pimlico. now we could see the first triple crown winner in decades the good evening. i'm rod daniels. taking a live look from sky

so hospitable and the horse loves it here. what a ride by mario gutierrez and what a finish. unbelievable pofment >> just before the jockeys mounted the horses, you and mario were having a conversation. you both looked very calm but words were exchanged. what were you talking about? >> i was actually trying to distract and talk about other things. he said if they slow down do you want me to be pretty close to him? i said, "mario, you know this horse." that was kind of it. i hate putting too much into a jockey's head at that moment. i more want to pump him up, remind him what a great rider he is and what a great horse. >> and counsel the stretch bodemeister showed the heart of a champion and looked like he might hold him off. what were you thinking as you

watched that last 300 yards? >> most of the time you are wanting the wire, come on, where's 9 wire but this time it was no, hold off. even at churchill downs he didn't get the lead until the last 100 yards. he's a deep closer and when he gets that stride going it's incredible. got to thank my man larry jones, the chiropractor, thumper. >> i had a chance to visit with him earlier in the week and he said part of the reason for the success is the length of his strides and the ease he goes with. >> he's a smooth customer. the people surrounding him take such great care of him and he's maintained that beautiful stride and his energy's been incredible and he is just a once in a lifetime horse. >> doug, i want to recap your two weeks here.

obvious camp david, protesters are occupying thurmont and chanting in the general direction of the remeat that they can't get within four miles of. noisy but peaceful protests ruled the day. some 200 bused in from washington and baltimore joined another demonstrators in the small mountain town of thurmont. we need democracy and free government. as a precaution, police in full riot gear moved in to keep protesters to the center of town. the officers were armed with beanbag shotgun shells. >> we have been training for this pour -- for months. we don't anticipate any problems. >> all the yellow corn grown in the united states isjectionjection -- genetically modified and this is a real

new tonight, police investigating a double shooting in baltimore. we're told it happened at about 1:30 this morning. police showed up to the scene but the victims were not there. later two men showed up at the johns hopkins emergency radio. both had been shot multiple times. right now they're in serious condition. no word on a motive. a son stabbed his own father in owings mills. police say the men got into an argument friday night around 6:30. the older man was rushed to shock trauma. apparently the son was injured when other family members tried to break up the fight. he was taken to the hospital, too, and now faces charges once he gets out the still more

now, nur 11 insta-weather forecast with john collins. >> lot of interesting developments today on the track and here, too. we've had some ideal weather. but down south, this cluster of rain we've been watching on the radar has turned into a tropical storm, alberto. this is roughly where the eye of the storm is off the coast

of south carolina. switch over to the satellite picture and we'll show you what's going on the you can see the clouds developing on the outside, sure sign that this ging -- thing is getting a circulation developing. it's awfully close to the coast, though. it is expected to keep going, head south, turn north and come right up the coast and by tuesdaying off hatteras as a tropical storm. and then diminish in strength as it gets off the coast of the delmarva peninsula wednesday. but it is expected to have some life for a few days. it will be interesting to see what happens with our first and very early storm of the season. 75 is typical for this time of year. we shot a little past what we expected to reach today, about

i haven't heard one complaint about today's weather. here are the clear skies we've had. a few high, thin cirrus clouds coming off the storm to the south. big area of high pressure sitting over the eastern seaboard, and that kind of holdsing -- holding this storm steady. it will be a while before it makes a turn and comes back around north and it looked like if this forecast comes out right, may contribute a little bit to the rain in the forecast. tomorrow, right up around 80 again. but we'll start picking up some clouds and after dark tomorrow, some rain shower activity. clouds moving in tomorrow and by tomorrow evening some rain chances. alberto still well to the south. the rain chances go way up on monday. then alberto makes its move and

that's all you can ask for. >> when you came here after what you had seen at churchill downs, did you think ok, a little bit shorter, would that be the difference? >> i really thought that it would be to his, you know, would help him, but you know, still, it's still pretty far. he just ran a great race. it's just a shame that he didn't hold on. i've been lucky enough to win this race five times, and now i know what the guys that ran second here feel like. but all a trainer can ask for is that his horse showed up. >> i saw the instant reaction. lined -- kind of like, that's horse racing, huh? >> well, i would be disappointed if he ran fifth, sixth. but he showed up. it was a great horse race and unfortunately somebody has to run second. >> last question for you, we've seen two incredible duels between these two horses. will bodemeister go to the

mourners gathered this morning at the church north of new york city for the funeral of mary richardson kennedy. guests included prominent members of the kennedy family. the casket was carried into the church by a group that included three of mary kennedy's children and one of her sisters. she was found dead of an apparent suicide at her nearby estate earlier this week. >> the jury in the john edwards corruption case finished their first dave deliberations without reaching a verdict. they are set to resume monday. if convicted of all charges, he faces up to 30 years in prison and a very big fine. straight ahead, a look at some of today's top stories. >> i'm gerry sandusky at pimlico.

double shooting in baltimore. >> we are told it happened around 1:30 this morning near preston and asquith streets. police showed up but the victims weren't there. both later showed up at baltimore emergency rooms. both are in serious condition. no word on a motive. rate -- right now prosecutors are trying to sort out a case of shootings. they called the case a road map of how revenge fuels much of baltimore city's violence. it all started when darrien kess was fatally stabbed in baltimore april 2, 2011. and if convicted, barron

bodemeister will not run in the belmont. as they broke from the gate at the preakness, as expected bodemeister applying the early speed and providing all the speed throughout this race. i'll have another with mario gutierrez on board hanging back in about fourth wace -- place as eau -- he stalked the leader much as he did in louisville two weeks ago. this time though bodemeister never got the commanding lead he had early in the kentucky derby. clubhouse turn is it was a four-horse race with i'll have another, bodemeister, creative cause finishing third in the pack as well. very much of a jockey's race. mike smith on board bodemeister. mario gutierrez on board i'll have another. keep in mind mike smith has ridden in the preakness several times. mario gutierrez, his first ride in the preakness, and just like he did at louisville in hiss

home in veracruz, mexico, but a short drive up i-95 to a shot at the triple crown the how does it feel? >> it feels amazing the so many emotions right now. it's just amazing, indescribable. it's unbelievable. >> strategically this race played out pretty much the way you and doug o'neill said you thought it would. but what a stretch run. it looked like bodemeister might hold you off. were you concerned that you weren't going to catch him at the wire? >> you know, it's such a great feeling when you can feel your horse stretching, like just keep racing and closing ground like crazy. it's an amazing feeling. i knew we were reaching ground like crazy until the end. what can i say? he's a tremendous horse. he has an unbelievable kick in the end. maybe now people will accept it now. maybe they will start give him

at the take a look at the satellite imagery. low clouds out over the atlantic and a much stronger storm off the south carolina coast that storm exploded in sensitivity -- activity today and became much better organized. it is now al bettero, a tropical storm. just off the -- alberto, i tropical storm, just off the coast of south carolina. it looks like eventually over the next couple days it will start to make a turn northward and head in our direction. here's the imagery showing where the storm is and the decaying high pressure that at the moment has the storm stalled. it can't move very far right now and this high pressure also gives us at least one more day of good weather. but alberto should make a turn, come up the coast and by tuesday be off hatteras and
