than those with just a high school diploma. >> so, if you haven't found a job yet, you're graduating, can you expect help from your alma mater once you graduate? >> you can. most colleges have career services. but you have to be pro-active as a student, or a grad to use those services. they can help you with everything from drafting your resume, your cover letters, interview etiquette, and they can also help you with connecting you to their alumni network. and that is so key. because you can reach out to them for jobs. >> so there's certainly some dos and don'ts. you say do research into each company. >> yes. i give advice to college grads and tell them they should approach the job application process as they would the college application process. want to research the job, the company, make sure you're a good fit for the role. you want to make sure when you're responding to job listings follow directions. everything you send to a company whether it's a resume or cover letter, make sure it's well written. no grammatical errors. tailor it to that company.

and most importantly manage your online identity. >> a lot of kids have put stuff online that employers can look at and find and might not be flattering. >> anything you post online, a potential employer can see that everything from your facebook to your twitter feed, to even your okay cupid account. and believe me we get a lot of resumes at ivywise. that's one of the first thing we look at is we do a background check. >> you also say network, network, network. >> yes. you might make great relationships when you're in college from say an internship or with professors and those people might be able to steer you in the right direction toward the job or at least act as a reference when you're applying for a job. >> we're talking about average salaries. what are we looking at? >> actually another piece of good news. the median average salary for the class of 2012 college grads has gone up to $42,569. which is up 4.5% from the median last year. >> so what fields are people doing the best in? >> well, the top industries that are hiring are hiring in
9:47 am
education, health care and social assistance, science and technical fields, like engineering, computer science, accounting. >> and let's say you get offered a job, it's not your dream job, take it? or wait and hold out for what you really want? >> well, although the economy is improving, the job market is still tough, so college grads shouldn't expect to get their ultimate dream job right out of college. but look for a job in a industry that you're interested in. and try to gain some skills that can be transferrable ultimately to get that goal of the dream job. >> so you don't get the job you want. you don't get offered a job per se but maybe an internship. do you say that? >> i say yes, an unpaid internship. you might have to live with mom and dad for awhile, wait tables at night but that's your opportunity to get your foot in the door in that industry that you love or that dream company. and you can prove yourself. if you work really hard that can oftentimes lead to that full-time job. >> job opens up, you're already there, and being there is always part of it. >> exactly. prove yourself.

this morning, do it yourself today, getting your garage organized. >> "today" contributor lou manfredini has some great ideas for putting everything in its place. >> nice to see you. >> this is the time people are getting busy, they want to get in the garage. you say you need to get everything out of the garage and get organized. >> the first thing today, the garage is like a vortex. you don't know where to put things. people with basements have the same problem, it all ends up in there. get it all out. get the place cleaned up and my first tip is to get the floor painted so really kind of brighten things up a little bit. >> right. >> most of us have concrete floors that just don't look
9:51 am
good, a lot of cracks. patch all those cracks. this is a kit by rust-oleum called epoxy shield. you have to clean the greece first. you mix "a" and "b." give it a little time to flake, it's called where it bonds. then you roll it onto the floor. this doesn't look like much. looks like a gray floor. but they give you these chips, and these little chips can make this actually look like a tile. this gets embedded into the wet finish. >> uh-huh. >> and then it bonds. you can drive the car right on top of this. this is also terrific solution for basement floors. >> oh. that's a good idea. >> an unfinished basement, you'd like to brighten things up a little bit. >> does it come in colors? >> there's a gray, there's a red. >> how long does that last? >> you're probably going to get a couple years and sort to see some lift under the tires but the rest of it is going to look great. >> if your floor is really in bad shape. >> this is a roll from the gorilla wrap people. this comes in different lengths and sizes. it looks like diamond plate.
9:52 am
you put a ledge at the front where the garage comes in like a little strip and you can roll a couple of these out. you can sweep it off. looks really nice. a little bit more expensive. a roll is about $500 but it's a great solution. >> shelving and putting things in their place. >> yeah, if you've got a dry-walled interior or even a studs interior these are tornado hooks. and these hooks are terrific, because they come with their own anchors that with the two anchors in dryall alone it will hold up to 30 pounds. if you hit the framing underneath there it will hold even more and they even have some racks. by raycore. and the shelving behind us, this is from a company called gorilla rack. they make industrial shelving for, you know, manufacturing facilities. the one you're leaning on right now called the boss, $129. holds a ton per shelf. >> literally a ton? >> 2,000 pounds. this one is 700 pounds her shelf. no bolts, no screws. they just click together. >> they just click together. but i imagine you have to have a little bit of strength -- >> no. >> i could do it?
9:53 am
>> absolutely. al could do it. >> oh, al could do it. >> okay. pull on that -- >> okay. >> wait a minute. >> i can do it. >> heave-ho! >> this is the ray core bike rack. you put this in the ceiling. >> it's not that bad, right? as far as lifting? >> if you keep going what happens? >> it keeps going higher and higher. >> okay. >> showoff. >> it lacks in place? >> and then release and it locks in place. now we're suspending it swinging because we're suspending it here in the studio but under -- in your garage, this little clip goes with just a few screws, the pulley system, get the bikes off the floor. >> your tools. >> look at this bench from gorilla rack. pull that out a flip-down bench. brand-new, never been seen before. this will hold 1,000 pounds. in a tight space this could even work in an apartment, or in a loft space. you could use it as a computer desk. it's $129.
9:54 am
organization, and look at how nice this butcher block top is. >> you just line everything up? >> yeah. and if you really want to go. this is from a company called new age. this entire kit, cabinet set, $1500. and -- >> now that's storage, obviously. >> yeah but it's really nice. and if you want to have your garage really look something special, and have a place where you don't want to see stuff it goes together very easily. they all come assembled. all you have to do is put the shelves inside. >> wow. >> and it gets shipped right to your home. a high quality, they make a red and a gray. the gray is the most popular. but i really like the red. >> it's nice. >> lou manfredini. >> thank you. >> coming up. hoda and kathy leigh with jimmy fallon. >> way to go. >> right after your local news.
