>> one person staff, another shot, and neighborhood looking for answers. and one for the record books. the orioles' player is about to have a huge payday. a person close to the pope is accused of leaking secret documents. now, rumors of a power struggle. 11 news start now. [captioning made possible by constellation energy group] captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- live, local, late-breaking, this is wbal tv-11 news. >> we begin with the wet weather. a tropical storm almost made it to hurricane strength and is causing a lot of people to cut their beach vacations short. closer to home, a live look of a

gorgeous day. then the storms rolled in. hundreds of people were at a concert on the national mall. john, how is it looking for tomorrow? >> well, a similar situation as we had today. . today was similar to yesterday. the difference was the storms. yesterday, there were storms in pennsylvania. that is where tonight's storms started. when they got to maryland, they dissipated before they got to baltimore. tonight, a different story, although the storms lost a lot of their strength as they drifted down. this is what it looked like just after 8:00 this evening. they were not severe at this point, at least in carroll county. frederick county, there was a severe thunderstorm warning. 8:35 p.m., the storms were moving into howard county. the strongest storms were moving out of frederick county into montgomery county. then the storms got into baltimore by about 9:00 or so.

in d.c., the concern was the lightning at that big concert. now the storms are moving south, the strongest of them. we will talk about what happens tomorrow because the setup is the same. the insta-weather plus forecast coming up. >> well, a boating trip took a scary turn this afternoon. officials say one man went missing in the chesapeake bay. people stopped their boat to go swimming. one man jumped feet first into the water and never came back up. officials are saying he's 21 years old and was wearing a black swimsuit. right now, police in the neighborhood are looking for answers after one person was shot and another stabbed. we have late breaking details. >> we know that the victims are boyfriend and girlfriend and they are still recovering from their injuries. police do not have too much injury -- information about the suspect other than they entered the back of the home and began a

confrontation that ended in a shooting and a stabbing. >> everybody is wondering, what is going on? >> his family has lived in the 700 block of this road since the mid-1950's and he is surprised that two of his neighbors were recently shot and stabbed here. >> it is just unusual for something like that to happen in the neighborhood. unfortunately. >> the shooting and stabbing happened inside the home around 10:45 a.m. >> when officers arrived, they found two victims. one was an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. the other, an adult female suffering from a stab wound. >> they have not been identified by police. the man was airlifted to the hospital. the woman's injuries are not life-threatening. >> is scary. you have kids and stuff like that. it is a little scary. my sister lives on this street. it is unfortunate.

around this area, you do have to watch here and there, but the kids love to come out and play and have a good time. the neighborhood loves to get along. it is tough when something like this happens. >> there are more questions than answers as the victims recover from their victory. in spite of the recent climate in the neighborhood, this man says he is not worried for his safety. >> i feel pretty well protected. >> again, police do not have too much information about the suspect. they are asking anyone with information to give the baltimore county police department a call. >> thank you. the biggest contract in orioles team history goes to adam jones. the team has surprised a lot of people this season. he is here to stay. he joins us with the details. >> the orioles have signed big

when word of the delete, more than 11,000 bought tickets and walked up in tribute. >> i think it is great for the city. we need a franchise player. >> we are telling orioles fans we are committed to this player. we are committed to putting a winning team on the field. we are committed to providing hope to rebuilding our fan base. >> this is now my town. >> that kind of sweater combined with talent is what the orioles want and need to compete. >> thank you, pete. tonight, police are looking for three men who walked away from a halfway house in west baltimore. these are the individuals on your screen. we are told the security guard heard the alarm of the front door opening. when they did a head count, the men were missing. all three were serving sentences for drug distribution.

anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call police. a woman in northeast baltimore was rushed to hospital after police say her boyfriend hit her on the head with a gun. it happened this afternoon on the 700 block of frederick avenue. the police are not sure if she was also hit by a bullet or just the gun. she is at shock trauma right now. just before 6:00, the suspect turned the gun on himself. police found him dead in the basement. earlier this morning, fire crews rushed to the scene of an rv up in flames. we are told it took 20 minutes to put out the flames. six people are at the home where the camper was parked. none were hurt. still no word on a cause. in commitment 2012, the memorial day holiday provides a chance for the presidential candidates to reach out to a key group of voters.

president obama will be laying a wreath at arlington national cemetery and then marking the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war. mitt romney is spending the holiday with former candidate and war prisoner john mccain who lost the 2008 election but one big with veterans. >> because of their leadership and their love for us, we did come home with honor. >> the military vote has traditionally skewed sharply toward republicans, but recent polling suggests it might be up for grabs. a butler arrested at the vatican, arrest -- accused of leaking some of the po's documents. but now -- some of the pope's documents. >> pope benedict has been searching for whoever betrayed his secrets. all along, it might have been the man closest to him. yesterday, the pope's personal butler was charged. the 46-year-old was always right

there with the pontiff, but what was he doing behind his back? >> this is a pious, quiet young man, who has worked in the holy city for 15 years. >> the scandal took a new twist last week with the publication of a book by a journalist. in confidential -- in it, confidential letters and memos to and from pope benedict. many are aimed at undermining the secretary of state. it is onlyars that di one man. senior officials at the vatican are following a line of underlying opposition to the secretary of state. >> the investigation is still continuing into whether other people were involved. as for the other, if he is found guilty, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

>> still more questions this weekend after a confession in one of the most famous missing persons cases ever. this week and then confessed to the 1979 murder of etan patz. he was the first missing child to be put on the side of a milk carton. pedro hernandez now says he killed patz. his lawyer says he has a history of mental health problems. >> we do not have physical evidence or anything that links him to the crime scene other than his proximity in new york at the time that etan went missing. >> legal investigators -- experts say investigators will need more information. penn state just released a report outlining how much its fired football coach and former president earned last year. former coach joe paterno earned slightly more than $1 million in

salary and benefits. the university president earned just under $1 million in salary and $170,000 in benefits. both were fired in the wake of a sex abuse scandal involving a former coach. but turner died in january. a scary scene this weekend. a house explodes in a suburb of milwaukee. seven people were hurt. two homes on either side also caught fire. other homes were damaged in the blast. investigators are waiting for several feet of water to drain out before they can determine the cause of the explosion. we know memorial day is a great time to fire up the grill. but let's have a reminder about what the holiday is really about. brave ♪e home of the [applause] celebrating the song, we caught up with a group of veterans and

honoring our veterans. a group of veterans has been touring the capital and attended an all-american feast. they arrived by bus after visiting memorial's designed and created for them. ranging in age from 85-101, on a tour of honor, this group of 22 world war ii veterans traveled all the way from bakersfield, california. >> bakersfield, calif., where the sun shines and love never dies. >> they stopped for lunch at mission bar-b-que for a complementary feast. >> this is an honor and a privilege for us in some small way to say thank you and give back to what we believe are american heroes. >> a non-profit called the honor flight network transports veterans free of charge to visit the nation's memorials, no small feat for this particular group. >> i give them a lot of credit to travel all that distance to come here to the east coast.

they are not young fellows. i think they look pretty good and i am happy to see them. >> everybody has a story. you try to tell them all. >> while the stories may include history book battles, their patriotism and serve the scene as young as the day they first signed up, even at 101. >> glad to be here. i would serve again if we had to. i would go again in a minute if we had to. >> the honor flight network has transported more than 81,000 veterans free of charge all over the -- from all over the country. as we mentioned, the weather of memorial day weekend is shaping up to be memorable in several parts of the country. people out west are praying for rain. in new mexico, a fire that began in the national forest has burned more than 150,000 square

miles and it is nowhere near under control. although extreme heat is something most of the nation is dealing with, that is not the case in northern california. >> it is freezing. we are going up to the snow in tahoe. >> the snowfall up there has residence checking the date on their calendars. all mixed up. >> that is right. we managed to get two fires out here, barbecue fires. the came in close to sunset. last night, a similar situation, but the rain died before it got here. tomorrow night, we're going to have another set up just like this. we will see what happens. let's take a look at the radar right now. the rain is diminishing rather rapidly. that storm system is falling apart. the heaviest of the rains are long gone now. when the storm came through here, the weather was severe up in pennsylvania and out in

frederick and montgomery county, but not here in the baltimore area. the rain totals are not significant here in baltimore. a little more to the west and down in d.c. let's take a look at the numbers we did collect here today. sunshine, 89 the high at the airport. 90 at the inner harbor. no records, the record is 95. 77 the typical high. only 100th of an inch of rain downtown. six hundredths of an inch fell here on tv hill. you can see the effects of the rain. still in the 70's on the eastern shore where the rain has not fallen yet. still somewhat clear skies. where the rain fell, about 10 degrees cooler. a drop into the 60's, and that reaches all the way out to garrett county. take a look at the satellite imagery. we are watching with interest some strong thunderstorms in southwest pennsylvania. that is moving to the southwest.

more than likely that will pass to our west and die in the mountain sometime later this evening. here is a front snaking through the northern portion of the mid- atlantic region. here is the high pressure giving us the good, hot, steamy weather we have had. tomorrow, some more storms could develop right along that front. we will see how far south they can drift. then here is the barrel, almost but not quite a hurricane. moving west at 7 miles per hour, just coming on to the jacksonville area. it is going to make a u-turned once against to florida and georgia and become a topical -- tropical depression. an interesting footnote to all this crazy whether we have been having. along with rainshowers tonight, a clear, showers by debris. 88-92 tomorrow.

a slight chance for an afternoon or evening thunderstorm. southwest winds at 10-12 miles per hour. the extended forecast, a higher range chance on tuesday, ending wednesday, and another rain chance on friday. >> we are still talking about the wonderful world war ii veterans earlier in the news cast. >> it is what the day is about. let's not forget.
