and suppressing thunderstorm activity. a good idea for outdoor activities. these are up in the mountains to the west. the same pressure system is producing the heat. 95 degrees. 90's in westminster. court in some areas. the hottest we have been since the first week of august last summer. when you add in the dew points near 70, the heat index running very close to 100 in the city, and off to the west of us in frederick, 96, all of that combines to a heat advisory. there is an excessive heat warning around metro philadelphia. we combine this with the actual atmosphere. it is tough out there. there is a little bit of heat relief later this week. this is a couple days away. in the meantime, you've got to cope with it. lowell melser is with us.

it feels almost 100 where you are standing right now. >> it certainly does. the only benefit we have is being close to the water. we get a little bit of a breeze, but temperatures in an almost like there are 100 degrees. the normal temperature is 79 degrees. that is way over where we should be right now, but surprisingly, even though it is hot out here, we found all kinds of folks who were enjoying themselves at the inner harbor or just enjoying outdoor activities this memorial day. keeping cool with some cool tunes over at the park. >> a kind of place where you can be cruel. find a cool spot. if you are on the porch in the sun, get out of the sun. >> despite a heat advisory monday, the heat index values in the mid 90's, folks were still out in full force, but the shade was definitely the place to be. >> it is a beautiful day.

>> a rare and a tropical storm sounded a wake-up call along the southeast coast. hurricane season, which officially starts june 1, is already here. the tropical storm came through just after midnight, with sustained winds as the strongest tropical storm on record. on a georgia islands, high winds brought an experienced a young girl would never forget. >> it was like the roof was going to come off. >> the memorial day weekend proved more nerve-racking than relaxing for those who chose to ride out the storm. >> it was scary. >> this was the scene on jekyll island before it came ashore. a rare double rainbow before the weather turned ugly. now, they are flooding low-lying areas, putting a damper on memorial day plans as crews worked to restore the power and

clean up the debris left behind by this preseasons storm. wbal tv 11 news. and it has been busy for law enforcement authorities. they have suspended the search for a missing swimmer, but they did recover the body of a boater reported missing last night. the boat crashed into a jedi. two other people on board are being treated at shock trauma, and that is where david collins joins us with more. >> sadly, they found the missing boater deceased near the crash site, and they say if he had been wearing a light jacket, the outcome may have been different. sadly, the search and rescue mission turned into a recovery operation. police and died units all teamed up. the charles county crew found the 42-year-old male after he was reported missing. >> they located him and went out

to get him. >> the 42-year-old man fell into the water after they struck a jedi around 11:15 sunday night. they say two passengers were seriously injured. a 50-year-old man and a woman were mad backed -- were medevaced. there is new equipment that held charles can find the body. >> 10 years ago, we would died and died and died. now, with the technology, we can narrow it down. two minutes. it is a huge help with the technology. >> they believe this death many of been prevented if the victim had been wearing a light jacket. drowning is the cause of 75 to 80% of boating deaths. they say 24 people died in boating accidents last year alone, nearly double the average. safety experts advise wearing a

>> a tragic end for one family after a truck driver struck another this morning as matthey was trying to cross coastal highway near 54th street. officials say the driver had been speeding and did not stop after the accident. witnesses followed the vehicle, not stopping until police arrived to make an arrest. the person is charged with homicide with a vehicle while intoxicated and other offenses. that person is from wharton, virginia. >> all across the greater baltimore region, it was time to take a moment to honor those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. the route the evening, we will be taking you to services around our area that commemorate our fallen it heroes. each branch paid tribute to trees killed and all of our

nation's wars. since memorial day was first observed back in the 1800's, thousands of servicemen and women have died in war. meanwhile, ben cardin is reflecting on the true meaning of a holiday with local be a nom veterans. he stopped by chapter 451, meeting and greeting servicemen and women. today marks an anniversary of the vietnam war. and one of the biggest observances took place in timonium. the traditional ceremonies since the men and women in the armed services who have paid the highest price. rob roblin takes us there. >> honoring those who served and those who paid the ultimate price. that is what memorial day is all about. as they do every year, people came here to the memorial

maybe not quite as beautiful of the next couple of days, but at least we have the memorial day weekend, which is nice. some thunderstorms have popped up 3 allegany and other counties. this is drenching some locations. they have had a warning and part of allegany county this afternoon because of a heavy slimming thunderstorm out west, but in the east, it is not the flooding rains. it is the heat that we are talking about. 91 at bwi-marshall. you can notice that it is a bit cooler appear. cambridge. annapolis. it is not dramatically cooler, but you do get some relief up in the day or in the mountains, where the temperatures are in the 80's. upper 60's and other spots. not much moisture produces a the heat index which is close to 100.

>> covering the nation and the world tonight, massacre of nearly 100 people in syria is being measured as a preventive turning point. a staunch syrian ally, russia, is taking an unusual hard-line against the regime of bashar al assad, saying they bear responsibility. it is said both sides obviously had a hand in it. he said the killings happened in an area patrolled by the rebels but one that is surrounded by government troops. meanwhile, a deadly day in afghanistan. two coalition service members were killed, and a third died in an insurgent attacks in the south. this brings the number killed in afghanistan up to 172. they are looking to withdraw combat forces by 2014 and to return a responsibility to the afghans. >> pop star justin bieber is being investigated for

athletes one last chance to play before the lacrosse season ends. this is still with constant action and lots of food and blocks of vendors. >> it includes both male and female athletes. one of the most perfect examples of how quickly across is gaining momentum around the country. >> and they are looking into why girls do not have to wear the home runs for the very same sport. we take a closer look at that debate. >> i was really tired. my head was pounding. >> the 18-year-old senior loves the sport. last year during a tournament, she took a hit to the head with a lacrosse stick. >> one girl knocked my goggles off, and another slashed me across the temple.

i remember falling, but i did not blacked out. i kept playing. so i knew when i got home something was wrong. i just did not feel right. >> she had a concussion. that took her out of the high school and out of the game, for 2.5 months. wendy remembers her daughter having a tough time. >> initially, not even being able to carry on a regular conversation. >> after a lot of research, they made a decision that once she healed, she would wear this moment when she played. she wore it for ball, and when the season started, she was not alone on the field. the varsity coach made a decision. if the girls wanted to play lacrosse, they would wear soft hellmann. equipment allowed under lacrosse rules do not have a standard for head gear for women. >> we had nine total, but not

all of them were from across. last year, we had multiple per cart -- concussions. we decided we would have our varsity and junior varsity wear them just to see if it would help in cutting it down. >> i am not sure -- so sure a soft, it will be protected. why did the men's game not adopt it? they went to a hard helmet to protect against the stick and ball. i do not see how soft, it will make a difference. >> the doctor works with the sports concussion program at sinai hospital. he sees athletes, both professional and others for serious injuries, and he has seen a number of female lacrosse players. >> the more serious injuries that make it to my clinic are stick to head or ball to head. crèche she knows it is not

foolproof and that so far this season, they have had only two concussions. >> opponents of the girls lacrosse argue the helmets would change the game. this was based in baltimore. >> what is the position of the u.s. lacrosse? >> changing the culture, changing the nature of the game. it is increasing the physicality of the game. that is a concern. people play with a greater sense of invincibility when they have protection. >> they want to find a balance and is working to establish a standard regarding women's lacrosse and head gear. >> we are focused on not compromising player safety. >> she and her parents are happy with their decision. >> we saw it as sort of a prophylactic thing to do as a parent, so we felt that if it

would give her more self- confidence, and add a little bit of protectiveness to her, we feel it was a better thing to do. >> it helped me with rebuilding my confidence. >> she says she will wear the helmet even next year in college. the doctor says he wants to see women's lacrosse could to helmets like the men's. >> i do not think they're going to play rougher game because they have the helmet on. >> in the meantime, the u.s. lacrosse is in agreement with dr. crutchfield about this. any player suspected of a concussion should be removed from the game and not allowed to play until they have been cleared. the doctor says it should be a doctor trained to deal with traumatic brain injury.

i am lisa robinson. >> now, your 11 insta-weather plus forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> a couple of isolated thunderstorms mainly up in the mountains to the west. not all whole lot going on, but just a plain old heat and humidity and summerlike weather. you can see on the radar that the storm is popping up. the mountains have kind of focus to help to get the storms generated. around here, it is unstable because there is nothing to get this upwards. this is stifling pressure. 98 at the inner harbor. that would have been a record that we kept that location, but now, all of the climate statistics are measured down at bwi-marshall. they fell short of the record which was forced established back in 1941. nothing in town today. these are all up in the mountains. 95 downtown, 90 in westminster,

and easton checks in at 90. some showers and storms out there, and the elevation helps out a lot. the heat advisory around baltimore continues. there is an excessive heat warning around philadelphia. the city probably will not get much above 65. this is about 5 miles per hour. there is a cold front that will bring some, but it will take some days. meantime, high pressure holding strong. that front brings a risk of a thunderstorm tonight and tomorrow night. i center front may kick up a shower on wednesday. this will help to zero -- steerer the remnants away from the mid-atlantic coast. strong storms are likely. maybe a few severe storms. again, with the front moving through, as beryl movs.

>> and u.s. senator is urging airlines to allow families to sit together without paying extra fees. chuck schumer is asking the transportation department to deal with rules that would prevent them for charging parents more to sit next to their children. they are pushing airlines to waive those fees for families. unnecessary fees should not merely serve as a barrier between mother and child. the largest casino in the state is just about ready to open its doors. they are hosting a preview tomorrow. getting a sneak peek on what to expect when it does open on june 6. we know there will be about 4700 slot machines, more than any other casino is currently authorized to have, and tomorrow's preview will also give a look on how that money is spent, including then used for
