5:27 pm
>> segolene advising those that have not headed out to not do so. with high winds and hail, we want everybody to stay as safe as they possibly can. certainly for those that are driving, please remember the rule of the ro by buckling up and driving at an appropriate speed for the weather conditions. >> other than that accident on i-95, are there any others reported that you know about? >> today, we do not have any weather-related lane closures, but recognizing that we will be seeing torrential rain over the next few hours, we want motorists to drive it definitely a safe speed, but at this time, we are not seeing any significant incidents. if they want to plan ahead, definitely log onto md511.org to see any lane closures or traffic

5:29 pm
stopped their car ride on the beltway, late couple whatever, because they are afraid to move forward. that leads to a chain reaction and crashes, doesn't it? >> that is true. if they are able to get to the shoulders safely, we advise they disappeared if you see standing water, turn around it are able to. another attempt to drive through any standing water that you may see. >> all right. state highway administration. i will be a long night for you guys. thanks for calling in. >> probably the best advice kelly had was to stay inside and do not get outside on the freeways. >> let the storm passed. >> we will take you back over to tom. >> we are continuing to watch these severe storms, but in our area. the two main threats now, when the came across the city just north of hamdan in baltimore county. very heavy rain, and perhaps some hill associated with the storm as well. or the hamdan and baltimore county, moving up perhaps for
5:30 pm
long green and eventually on of into southwestern part of parcel caddy. perhaps more importantly, even as it was approaching this city toward the south, it is now centered in pg county moving north. it has prompted the weather system to issue a warning including the county and northwestern ann arundel county and the extreme eastern part of howard county. that is the warning area right there coming out of belief -- bowie. that is the forecast track for that particular strong sell. is this warning that just popped up in frederick county. still have some strong storms to our west, and it wanted a warning issued in frederick county until 6:00. some of thunderstorms around baltimore, with a tornado perhaps approaching from the south, and out in frederick county, and he is also a possible rotating thunderstorm with a tornado warning in effect there.
5:31 pm
this is what the rain looks like associated with some of these storms. starting to get a little more disorganized, but still showing signs of rotation according to the stand in the area here for us in the media baltimore metro area, the immediate -- the most dangerous storm is the one toward bowie. one more little scared of it, just to show you where the warning is in effect and the storm system it is impacting. the storms have been mowing -- moving from south west and northeast. it does not take long for the system to move in. it also is it through pretty quickly, and that is why we say take shelter and wait for the storm to pass by. i will not be too long and you'll be in the clear. right now, powerful thunderstorm perhaps producing a tornado. there is the information on it. it is strongly rotating stones
5:32 pm
as to the northwest of mitchell bill. it is popping up for the door, maybe as far north as baltimore city in the course of the next hour, hour-and-a-half or so. when it went until 6:00, just to the southwest of baltimore city, that we have to keep a very close eye on, with strong storms still all around the region. the debt continues theory the tornado watch itself is in effect until 9:00 tonight. we continue to monitor the radar, keep you posted as the storm's track through. let me get a quick scan on this one to show the movement. two miles north, moving north east of 27, gets it up to ridgway at five minutes before 6:00, and that warning goes until 6:00. >> thank you very much. one of the great things about social media is it gets us thousands and thousands more eyes and ears. >> we want to go now to kate, who has been tracking all of these for us, with your take on the damage. >> i hope that a lot of people
5:33 pm
will use facebook and twitter before their power goes out tonight to send us pictures. we want to know what you are seeing where you are. two interesting tidbits we got recently -- bob in manchester said all he got was a half inch of rain, while katie -- and this is just two minutes ago -- she said hailed as started. he said it is about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch. she said the rain is heavy and trees are swaying violently. interesting observation from a viewer, and this is the kind of question i had as well, and if tom is listening, maybe he could answer it. she said she lives at the top of the hill. her question is if she sees clouds moving quickly from the east and clouds moving quickly from the west and the clouds moving straight toward the sky, is that the beginning of something to worry about? i guess we will have to ask, if
5:34 pm
he can answer that question. he has been talking a lot about how these storms are just chaotic. i forget the exact add to it being used. what kind of rotation in the clouds and cloud movement that ec does it become something that you really need to worry about? >> all right, well, try to hang in there. >> we will try to ask tom that question. >> i do not have the answer for you. in any time, we have a representative from the city emergency management agency and the phone right now. bob, are you with us? i know we're taking up time, and you have it with us since we have been on the air, roughly about 40 minutes. what are you hearing right now? >> the one cell that came across -- we had a lot of rain come in a short time. we are in the process now of
5:35 pm
monitoring these flash flooding conditions. the only remarkable area we have to report is the usual suspect and the kelly avenue bridge. >> jones falls is always a problem, and a lot of rain falls quickly. that thing fills up so fast. >> it looks like on this particular cell, the middle of the city and the west side of the city got the brunt of it, but it was a lot of rain in a short time, that is for sure. >> also, in addition to jones falls, you get a lot of pounding because if it means too hard, you cannot get it off quickly enough -- a lot of ponding. we are monitoring traffic conditions now, and it looks like the floor traffic is pretty good, but there are puddles, and that is what we want people to watch out for, especially in areas where the storm drains might not be draining properly. just be careful as you get home.
5:36 pm
more importantly, that storm cell coming up from the south that looks like it will track across the city has that tornado warning with it. we are very concerned about that. >> isn't it interesting how timing is so important? if this had been a week ago before you guessed it is all that jfk construction, imagine what it would have been like tonight. >> you are right. my hat is off to transportation. i think they did a great job with getting that open, so you are dead right about that one. >> in addition to the falls road area heading into the mouth washington area, any other areas that motorists should be concerned about or trying to avoid at this hour? >> i would say no. we do not have anything, and if we do, it is very isolated intersections. everything seems to be moving nicely. i think tonight is people come back downtown into the city for various events, they just need
5:37 pm
to exercise due caution. this thing is far from over. what worries me is when the cells it downgraded from a tornado warning or watch to a severe thunderstorm, people tend to say that it is ok. it is far from ok. you still need to be aware and take precautions and be prepared. >> a little courtesy would go a long way at this hour, too. >> yes, you know, everyone wants to get home safe to their families, take it easy. you know, we do not need an accident right now to tie things up. >> we are looking at pictures right now. captain roy taylor, i think you are up there looking at this, are you not? >> thanks, bob, by the way. >> we are seeing flooding in the arts here. >> -- flooding in the yards here. >> we are getting reports of a couple of houses that have trees
5:38 pm
in them. >> there is it undersell getting ready to head to the city. i do not know how much longer we will be able to hang out here. we will probably start heading back towards the airport. behind the cell working its way up through bwi, nothing but heavy rain after that. we are hearing talk on the scanner's of trees. no injuries at the present time, but expect more as this weather comes on through. >> thank you very much. that looks unpleasant. >> it looked like a fire at -- pit. >> it has been coming down hard year for going on about an hour. >> it is not constant, but it will just found and then it stops, and then it comes back again. >> it may do that for another hour or two hours? what do you think?
5:39 pm
>> we are under the risk of severe storms until lease 9:00. probably until midnight. that is a safe, rough figure. the 20 the threat will diminish as the evening wears on, but we still have torn it warnings in effect right now in our area. baltimore city covered in some very heavy rain. it still shows some signs of rotation and some circulation in the atmosphere associated with it. very heavy rain moving northeast about now, continue to push up into hartford county as the next hour or so moves on. the storm cell that the weather service has issued a tornado warning for, the tornado warning includes most of northwestern ann arundel county until 6:00. the extreme eastern tip of howard county. i do not think howard county is that much demand of this except for the border area. as you can see, it is just now
5:40 pm
crossing the pg/ann arundel . if there's a circulation with this one, it would probably be sitting somewhere in here in the general vicinity of the storm system as it makes its way to the northeast very rapidly. that is the one the will be approaching baltimore city over the next hour, and the morning goes until 6:00 or so. these storms follow each other. one moving toward hartford county, and coming up behind it is one approachingodinton -- approaching odinton. the weather service included eastern howard county, but they are not as much under the gun here to the rest of us, there's also a warning out around frederick. it just shows you there is some volatile weather out to the west of us. that goes until 6:00, and the entire region is under a watch until 9:00 this evening. farther off to the mountains is
5:41 pm
where we find the last one of the storms, and you can see them crossing, and gusty winds will be associated with that line of storms as well. out ahead of it in the warm, muggy air, isolated storms, and the line, which is associated with the cold front. it is hard to believe right now, but tomorrow should be a beautiful saturday once we get past all this rough weather. we are right now on the stormy side of this whole thing and have to watch for isolated tornadoes to prop up. a tornado warning in ann arundel counted until 6:00. the storms in the area. we will keep an eye on the reader over the next few hours. m a keeping an eye on the weather center for sure. as we saw from captain roy taylor earlier this afternoon, a lot of damage has happened. we cannot get a live shot because it is too dangerous, but we are joined by telephone. what are you seeing?
5:42 pm
>> it is a little heart breaking right now. as we were approaching the 1900 block of swat away, we noticed a lot of downed trees and some residents out trying to clear that the area. again, branches on the floor, strewn all over the community. once you reach this home here on the 1900 law, we noticed 80-foot trees just slam, crashed right on the roof of this home. residents of this home have been here for about 16 years. fortunately, they are a-ok, thank goodness. they were on the other side of this house while the street, which was rotten through quite some time, just slammed down on to this home. as we speak, we have a building inspector here has ruled that this home is condemned for now, so they will have to find some arrangements for the rest of this evening, and as soon as we are able to clear up the scene, we are waiting for a construction crew to come down
5:43 pm
here with a crane to remove the street. they have been trying to figure out where they will stay tonight. it is really a heartbreaking scene out here. we will be out here all evening, but again, we're going to talk to a number of other residents in the community who are also dealing with the aftermath of the system. they are also cleaning up their yards with some branches and trees that have snapped. they also reported some power outages here as well, so they are hoping that the power will come back on, hopefully around 7:30 this evening, but again, that is not the way anyone would want to start a weekend, that is for sure. >> quick question for you. you may have answered this a few seconds ago. i was going to ask -- as far as that large, large tree that fell on the house, sometimes you get so much rain, which we have had in the area, and the ground gets so saturated that older, bigger trees simply toppled because the ground cannot support them anymore, or was this a wind- based tree going into the house?
5:44 pm
