>> the furies started after lunch time and we are still feeling the effects. the destruction of left in the wake of these damaging storms. >> one of the hardest-hit areas is harford county. motorists had to navigate around downed power lines. baltimore county also suffered damage in some parts a massive tree -- in some parts. here is a huge tree that destroyed part of the hon. we have complete team coverage of the devastations. you probably have been watching the radar all day long. let's go to tom tasselmyer. >> we can see from the lightning strikes that the worst of the weather continues to make its way east of the coast and out over the head lentic. all good news for the storm

ravaged area of maryland. the northeastern corner of your state, at numerous lightning strikes, as well as ocean city. that is a good indication that the storm is now reaching ocean city. they are associated with some pretty heavy downpours coming from south to north. in cecil county, we are dealing with a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for the next few minutes. the rough weather is hanging on in parts of the upper eastern shore. that warning goes until 11:15. the flooding rains that come with the system have been with us the past several hours. on the western shore, the heavy rains are about to taper off. we have had over 3 inches of rain in northwest baltimore. it is still coming down. it is beginning to dry out and

skies are beginning to clear as more stable air filters and behind this nasty line of thunderstorms. slowly improving weather on the way. the weekend forecast, which i think you're going to like, is coming up. >> the heaviest concentration of damage is centered in harford county. areas suffered extensive damage. bring us up-to-date. >> i can also tell you about the very strong rains that just came through over the past five minutes. it is absolutely pouring. that heavy rain is supposed to fall for the next hour or so. we are standing near rte. 1 and 152. you can see emergency crews are

still working behind me. we caught the worst of the storm as it rolled through here around 6:00. damage to buildings, we even saw some reports of cars overturned. the auto auction showcase had a lot of damage. emergency officials say that four people were injured, one person was transported to shock trauma. the great news is all of these are non-life-threatening injuries. what we are hearing is about 20 buildings damaged, six of them severely damaged. we have about 2700 people without power. officials are asking residents to stay out of the storm zone for the rest of the night. >> whatever -- it is very

important, these storms have a history of being dangerous. we need to be prepared, he the warnings, take cover if it is warranted. before you venture out, be very careful. >> we have county executive joining us. we were just hearing an interview about what people should do for the night, stay out of this area. what other things? >> we are encouraging people if you have a generator in your house -- if you have any problems with your help, call 9/11. -- 911. power lines that may be down, bge has been very helpful. they have several crews that will be here all night.

one truck just went by. we encourage people to stay home. we will have teams going around to inspect houses tomorrow. >> considering the extent of the damage, do you know anything about the injuries? >> the one that was the most severe has internal injuries, a broken leg. he was the gentleman who had the building that collapsed. he went to shock trauma. not life-threatening at this point. the other entries are smaller. >> that is great news. we also want to tell you about some road closures. whitaker mills, bellaire road, and joppa road. if you can stay out of this entire area, let workers do their job. we'll have more information as

it becomes available. >> one of the areas for stitch by storms was carroll county. -- was hit by storms was carroll county. what is going on? >> heavy rain continued to pour out here in its burk -- in a vicksburg. here is part of the 90-foot tree that crashed to the roof during the first storm system, resulting in immediate destruction. turning this family's life upside down. when the first storm system hit carroll county friday afternoon, they hunker down in their home. all of a sudden, they heard a noise they will never forget. >> i hear the crash. it was the most horrific sound. >> a 90-foot tree came crashing

down on the roof. a building this -- a building inspector declared the home unlivable. >> it is a mess. it is a total mess. >> it was so loud around here, it was almost like a helicopter was 100 yards above my house. >> homeowners were picking up branches in dealing with power outages. he considers himself lucky after seeing what his neighbor had to deal with. >> they have lived here a little bit longer than we have. they have always been so nice, it is a shame. >> he hopes to be back in his home, but is grateful everyone is able to walk away in one piece. >> and thank god we are all still alive. >> [no audio]

to howard county, where the damage was pretty extensive tonight. the storm tore through the area, causing trees to split and fall on to the roadways. the heavy rains were a nightmare for drivers. one resident said it happened so fast. >> the wind was not in a single direction. it was a deluge. >> we heard that from a lot of people. the damage in this neighborhood. >> at least two homes were severely damaged after large trees collapsed on them. david collins has that story. >> one storm south announced itself with heavy rain, neighbors described eight loud wind swirl. they say it but like a white ghost coming up the street.

a huge tree in the backyard split, crashing on top of their roof. pat said she thought it was a loud crack of lightning. neighbors cleared a path so she could exit her front door. the storm uprooted an even bigger retreat. it smashed a big section of the second floor of this two-story wood frame house. >> it sounded like a big pop, we thought it was a transformer. >> what did you find? >> we did not look. >> at the tree smashed two cars. binkley, no one was hurt. -- thankfully, no one was hurt. >> it is not just the flooding and the damage we are dealing with. strong winds ripped out trees, sending them across power lines. about 18,500 power outages, most

south chester street. just down the block was a high school that was placed on locked down. police confronted two suspects. one officer discharged her gun. no word on the whereabouts of the second suspect. is standing room only crowd today for the first meeting of the governor's commission on expanding gaming. the panel will look into the impact of six -- a sixth casino may have on the other five locations. martin o'malley says he will include the information in his decision to hold a special session on expanding gambling the week of july 9. >> two baltimore city administrators accused of cheating could begin their jobs back. that is the recognition of the hearing -- that is the recommendation of the hearing

pretty likely that severe storms are going to break out. in the mid-atlantic region, more than a dozen of reports of possible tornadoes. they will not be confirmed until teams can go out and inspect the damage. about 100 reports of wind damage. the good news is you can see the storms are winding down in the baltimore metro area. still some heavy downpours up there are around bellaire. also some decent rain moving out of the upper eastern shore into delaware. the storms are now reaching ocean city. checkout western maryland, that is what we are looking forward to. the almanac to date does show more than an inch of rain at the airport. high temperatures were above normal for this first day of gen.

that -- for the first day of june. that sets the stage for the strong thunderstorms that developed in the afternoon. while these numbers look fairly impressive, in your backyard may have had a whole lot more than that. we have had over 3.1 inches of rain today on tv hill. the yellow stripes, that is over 2 inches of rain. that stretches from central harford to eastern howard. the orange areas, that is where you top 3 inches of rain. george backyard could add two, three, even more inches -- your backyard could've had 2, 3, even more inches of rain. these areas have ongoing

flooding of low-lying areas. coastal flooding advisory on the coast for anne arundel county. all of on the region, as you have to be on the lookout for flooding conditions. look how cold it is getting out west. down into the low 60's around baltimore, holding onto some 70's along the coast. the cool air will be your by the morning. expect to see some sunshine in the area saturday morning. a more comfortable day to start. the main low pressure is over the legs, but it is driving that front for the mid-atlantic. only in the 50's and 60's over the lakes. that is where the front is triggering the storm. tomorrow, we enjoyed a sunny day.
