first governor in u.s. history to survive a recall attempt. walker's win is not only a defeat for milwaukee mayor tom barrett, but also for the union leaders who rallied against his controversial cuts. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: it was closer than many expected. but the win could make wisconsin's republican governor, scott walker a gop superstar. for taking on the unions in his state. and surviving their counter move to take him down. >> tomorrow, the election is over, it's time to move wisconsin forward. >> reporter: the recall was born last year when walker stripped public employee unions of the right to bargain. some saw the vote as a preview of the presidential election. conservatives had pumped $47 million in walker's campaign, a record. mitt romney backed walker and said voters rejected run away government costs and liberal

ideas. president obama backed the democrat, but fearful of alienating wisconsinites he stayed away. as the presidential preferences in exit polls, wisconsin voters backed obama over romney by nine points. the republican governor won but wisconsin could stay in president obama's column in the fall. steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. take a look at this, symbolic how high oh motions in wisconsin ran over this recall, last night, mayor barrett was slapped by one of his own supporters, who thought he conceded to walker too early. well, for the death of al qaeda secretary in command is being called the biggest victory in the war on terror since the death of osama bin laden. u.s. and pakistani officials confirm a drone strike in northwest pakistan killed abu yahya al-libi. the so-called media savvy general leader of al qaeda was

captured about a decade ago but later escaped in 2005. the white house called his death a "major blow" to the terror group. nine members of a jury have already been selected for the trial of former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky. he is facing 52 criminal counts for the alleged sexual abuse of ten boys over 15 years. some of those alleged victims are expected to testify. prosecutors reportedly have incriminating and bizarre letters that sandusky allegedly wrote one of his accusers. nbc news has learned prosecutors plan to start the case next week by reading copies of what are described as love letters to support the charges that sandusky repeat lid had improper sexual relations with the boy. elsewhere in england it was the finale of four days of the diamond jubilee celebration marking 60 years of the reign of queen elizabeth.

celebrations concluded with the royal family appearing on the balcony of buckingham palace with the fly by from modern and former royal air force aircraft. two minute taped tv broadcast the queen thanked her subjects for what she called the countless kindnesses shown to her. the queen's husband, prince phillip, was unable to attend ceremonies the last two days due to hospital treatment for a bladder infection. prince charles says his father is getting better and watched the festivities on tv. now here is a look at other stories making news "early today" in america. the violent arrest of a man in philadelphia is under investigation. cell phone video shows the 18-year-old suspect clearly resisting two police officers. but when two other officers arrived on the scene, they are shown punching him, kicking him and swinging their batons at him. police say he resisted arrest after a car crash. the family of the suspect says he has staples in his head as a result of the scuffle. the officers have been placed on

desk duty for now. to colorado, what is wrong with this picture? plenty, say police. it shows a child safety seat being used to hold a gas can instead of the toddler sitting right beside the seat. the mom at the wheel claimed the little boy constantly crawls out of the safety seat. she was cited for that and because she and her teenager weren't using their own seatbelts. in florida, fireworks used to celebrate high school graduation misfired. one of them blew up in the bleachers, six people suffered minor injuries. final lly from california t connecticut star gazer put on glasses and telescopes to look toward the sun to catch venus crossing between the sun and earth. what a sight it was. only been seen six times since the 17th century. if you missed it, bad news, it won't happen again for more than a century.

upstate new york. showers in the mountains of west virginia down to virginia and north carolina, as far as texas goes, a little cluster of thunderstorms by abilene, as we go throughout the afternoon, only one area of concern, we may get a few tornadoes out of this, too, talking northeast colorado and extreme western portions of nebraska, denver area the biggest threat should be possibility of large hail, maybe a little bit of damaging winds. the forecast for your wednesday, i think the summer temperatures beginning to return to the mid-atlantic and warmer and beautiful in the great lakes. that is a look at the wednesday forecast, here is a look at weather outside your window. nashville, tennessee, that is a gorgeous day you know summer heat and humidity will return sooner or later, low 80s and lower humidity levels just about perfect. atlanta, same for you, enjoy it while it lasts. it's too bad that you won't be able to see venus in our life time. i missed out.

treatments base the on a woman's likelihood of a cancer recurrence. the issue of same sex marriage is one step closer to being decided by the u.s. supreme court. the federal appeals court that struck down california's proposition 8 ban on gay unions has refused to reconsider the ruling, and supporters have 90 days to petition the supreme court. in mississippi, henry curtis jackson, jr., was executed by lethal injection for the 1990 murders of four young nieces and nephews. he was put to death despite the pleas of his two sisters to spare the brother who killed their children. miss pennsylvania, sheena monnin has resigned charging the miss usa pageant was fixed. she said someone told her the top five finishers before the show started. she called the pageant among other things, fraudulent and trashy. pageant officials deny the

charges and claimed she told them she was resigning due to the inclusion of trans-gender contestants. here is an early look how wall street will kick off the day. do you opens at 12,127 after adding 26 points yesterday. s&p up 7, the nasdaq gained 18. taking a look at overseas trading in tokyo the nikkei jumped 151 points, in hong kong the hang seng claimed 261. a little upbeat economic data helped stocks recover some lost ground wednesday. data showing the service sector improved in may outweighed worries about the euro zone's fiscal crisis. financial stocks got the biggest boost. bank of america rose 3%. jp morgan added 3. investors hoping for signs of action from the european central bank meeting today after yesterday's emergency g-7 talks offer nod new solutions.

good morning if you're just waking up this is "early today." in sports last night in the nba's eastern finals, the celtics had an answer to every miami move. taking them one win away from the finals. here's fred roggin with an early look at all sports headlines. good morning, chris bosh returned for the heat but that wasn't enough to stop the celtics. he received a standing ovation when he entered the game in the first quarter. play 14 minutes, had nine points. boston never led in the first half but capped off a 15-1 run. miami answered back with a run of their own. took back the lead with nine points dwyane wade had 27. boston wanted it more. blocked by wade, rajon rondo
