>> tonight our big story, tens of thousands of tourists, including 4000 sailors, are flocking to baltimore for the star-spangled sailabration. >> the festivities officially kicked off this morning. today is flag day. rob roblin was right in the heart of it all at the inner harbor and has this report. ♪ >> the u.s. navy band was playing as they began a welcome ceremonies here at star-spangled sailabration. ships from all over the world and folks from all over the country are here. >> everything is fantastic. the ships, the people, everybody has been more than friendly. thank you, we appreciate you coming. has been a great time down here.

days later. >> kim dacey is live at county police headquarters in towson. >> we have learned that the state medical examiner's office has ruled the cause of death as asphyxiation. a source close to the investigation tells us the officer put the teenager in a chokehold. >> i just want to know what happened. >> 17-year-old christopher brown's family has a lot of questions they want answered. she got a call early thursday morning informing her her son was dead after an altercation with an off-duty county police officer. >> he is a good kid. he is in rotc. he is an usher at church. >> can police said around 10:30 wednesday night the off-duty officer was at home in randallstown when he heard a crash from the front door. police say he opened it and saw several people running away.

he chased them through neighbors' yards and a cross the road. >> the officer here's the young man in the bushes and tells them to come out. the gunmen refused to come out, so the officer went into the bushes -- the young man refused to come out. the officer pulled him out and a physical fight ensued. at some point, the young man became unconscious. >> what are you doing, what is going on? can you pull him out and talk to him? it did not have to go to this. he is dead. >> christopher brown died at the hospital. police said there were no weapons used in the fight and they don't think the officer and brown knew each other before last night. >> we are angry. i did not plan to have to bury my child. >> police are conducting an

internal investigation. the officer is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of that investigation. the state's attorney's office will determine whether recharges will be filed. kim dacey, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a situation at a baltimore county home -- we were on the senior woodlawn high just before noon today. police said they were responding to domestic incident where man had barricaded himself inside with two women inside as well. authorities say the man was taken into custody about 3:00 this afternoon without incident or injury. his girlfriend and sister were able to escape without harm. >> an alleged bribery ring was busted. >> it all happened right here next to this abandoned

restaurant. things are pretty much back to normal after six people were arrested in a joint operation between the fed and the baltimore city police. >> these were very violent individuals who intended to do some serious harm today. >> about 11:40 thursday morning, a group of suspects was believed responsible for a string of armed robberies throughout the area. it had been in north baltimore. >> we had information that led us to believe they were going to commit an armed robbery today. >> as agents and officers moved in to try to make the rest, authorities say four of the six suspects tried to flee in his red car. two agents were on foot. >> one of the agency was in fear of his life and the other agents and officers around him fired one round from his weapon at the driver of the vehicle who was attempting to run him over, striking him once in the right

shoulder. >> the car rammed into police cruisers before it was stopped. authorities recovered five firearms and one ballistics tests. >> i thought it was a horrible accident. >> this woman who asked us not to reveal her identity not only was at the take down but try to take pictures as well. she said she is not shocked the bust went down in her community. >> this is the best place because it is very quiet. there's no one here. a lot of times, people will come from the other side of 83 and run through here to get away. >> federal charges are pending for those suspects. >> this week's fire alarm fire sent smoke billowing throughout baltimore city. tonight we are getting the first estimates of how much the damage will cost. >> michael phelps tweaks himself

doping. in the meantime he will not be able to compete in an international iron man triathlon contest while he is under investigation. he and his teammates were in bge claims he and his teammates were involved in a doping conspiracy. armstrong claims he has taken hundreds of drug test in his career and never tested positive. armstrong has been participating in triathlons since his retirement from cycling. michael phelps is causing some drama via twitter, asking how random drug testing really is. he goes on to say it is not bad that they test, but little

excessive. just wonder if the other athletes are getting the test that i get. he was caught in a picture with the marijuana pipe after his performance at the 2008 olympics. he was suspended from usa swimming because of that. we are finally getting a damage estimate on monday's spectacular fire alarm fire in fells point. the flames caused an estimated $1.5 million worth of damage. the massive believblazing huge s of smoke throughout the city. because of the fire remains under investigation. >> millions of bacteria use the human body as a home base. most live peacefully without making us sick.

for the first time, microbiologists have documented bacteria and other microbes that live on or in healthy people. bacteria are essential for us to digest food and metabolize vitamins and fine of bad bacteria. the refined to de -- surprised to find bacteria coexisted with good bacteria even in healthy people. an fda advisory panel is recommending expanding the number of patients that can use an artificial heart valve that can be implanted without open heart surgery. that make a small incision and cut out the damaged valve. it is already approved for people who are not healthy enough to get open-heart surgery. many factories -- manufactures hope it will expand to others.

one mother fight could soon make medical history. >> 13-year-old jordan is getting ready for a very special night. family and friends have gathered for benefit in honor of the eighth grader who has just learned she will need a bone marrow transplant. she has a genetic disorder that destroys bone marrow and increases the chance of cancer. this april, her condition took a turn for the worse. a transplant is our only hope for survival. >> you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. >> now she is fighting to make medical history. >> you have now found yourself in a very unusual spots. you also have become a very public face in a very public

this big swirl in the atmosphere. there is baltimore over on the left side of the screen. this will be a major player in that weather scenario. we just happen to be under a good spot, so the nice weather is going to stick around for a while. you can see the cloud cover coming off the water. that will be around again tomorrow and it looks like it will dissipate after sunset, but that set up will be with us tomorrow and for the beginning of the weekend. there are some thunderstorms down in florida and a few storms up in the great lakes. basically an area of low pressure offshore and high- pressure in new england, so things will remain pretty quiet for a period the east when will keep temperatures slightly below average for the next 24 hours at least.

ext. we want to take about a couple of updates. 5-year-old raven wyatt was hit by stray bullet and critically injured. it turns out the monitoring device was not functioning. raven's mother is now seeking a judgment against the company that was monitoring the device. it is estimated it the family will spent $7 million on her care in her lifetime. >> back in 2009, 3 baltimore police officers were accused of picking up some west baltimore teenagers and dropping one of them off more than 10 miles away from his home without his shoes.

we are now learning in the city is refusing to pay a fine. would continue to follow a developing story from west baltimore tonight. city police are calling the death of a 1-year-old girl suspicious. at this hour, detectives will not specify why. police and ems were dispatched about 10:00 yesterday morning and less than an hour-and-a-half later, the child was pronounced dead. an autopsy is now under way and so for note charges have been filed. >> the prosecution is laying out disturbing case against former penn state coach jerry sandusky. >> the historic event corecting the war of 1812 to

meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> right now, what a sight at the inner harbor. skyteam 11 is live over the bustling scene of sailabration. today is extra significant because it is flag day. >> the original star spangled banner flag is being used to honor veterans. >> in about an hour there will be a national call for the pledge of allegiance here at ford mchenry. a few people have already started gathering. that ceremonial pledge of allegiance will include patriotic music. there was a fitting tribute not far away from here at the star spangled banner flying museum. hundreds of people gathered for

an historic event. three threads of the original flag that flew above fort benning henry were sewn into the national 9/11 flag. the flight was destroyed during the 9/11 attacks and was restored over the years. sit today maryland history is united with all those stories. >> i just thought about everything that had gone into the flag, and everyone who had stitched it, and what an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime moment that i was here. >> i think it is incredible. all of the different stories that go into it, it is very incredible. >> the national 9/11 flag will be on display in new york city. you want to see a piece of maryland and the war of 1812 in that light, you'll have to travel up to new york city.

a meeting was a great boxer from the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. for suspects tried to take off in a car heading straight for to agents. that is when we are told one of the agents fired at the driver, striking him in the shoulder. the car rammed two cruiser's before it was stopped. late breaking details on the suspect in harford county. a grand jury has indicted alexander kinyua on a more serious charge of attempted murder. joshua caesar says kinyua him over the head with a baseball bat, knocking him out. he was left blind in one eye because of the attack. harford county police say kinyua killed and ate the heart and

brain of a family friend just days after that attack. >> breaking news right now. in northeast baltimore, this is video just back from the scene from skyteam 11 above the house fire in the 4200 block of arizona avenue. firefighters say they encountered heavy smoke on the first floor of a home but were able to quickly not down the flames. there is no word on the cause of the fire. another day of graphic and emotional testimony and a child sex abuse case against jerry sandusky. he is charged with 52 counts of abuse involving 10 miners over 15-year period. brian moore has the latest for us from ellicott city. >> an investigator testified that former penn state football coach jerry sandusky admitted to showering with young boys back in 1998 and has admitted to bad judgment, but denied sexual intent.

a former state police investigator recalled he was contacted by mother who said sandusky molesting her son at a shower -- in a shower. he said a conversation with sandusky where he said i would ask forgiveness from you but i know i would not get it. i wish i was dead. >> this is an 11-year-old boy at the time. he knew something was not right, and he gave his mother a hint to that effect by a comment that he made. knowing on one hand that she would want to know more about it, but on the other hand being conflicted that he did not want to say anything more about it. >> under cross-examination, the young men admitted he had been in regular contact with sandusky

until last year and sent him a 2009 thanksgiving card that said "i am glad god placed in my life. you are an awesome friend." he said my perception change, thinking about it as an adult instead of an 11-year-old. the court heard from a 25-year- old national guard soldier who said he was abused dozens of times, yet saw sandusky as a father figure. an address list with the number of stars and bite names of victims. >> last month we witnessed a tight rope walker across the inner harbor. >> he did it without a safety harness. now he is preparing for his next big feetat.

francis scott key's star spangled banner. one of the cool things about the festivities at the inner harbor this week, ships from all around the world. >> and it is free. jennifer franciotti is a navy brat and she went on board the uss portman henry. -- the uss fort mchenry. >> a little bit of history about the ship. among the military ships from around the world docked at the marine terminal in locust point is the uss fort mchenry. the navy's amphibious warfare vessel is named after baltimore's own fort mchenry. it is the destination most of the crew had never seen before, but are certainly looking forward to visiting. >> every day the ship has to name up to -- has to live up to its namesake.

to the high temperature at the airport 80 degrees, two degrees below the average of 82. it will stay in that neighborhood through the weekend. it got up to 84 at the inner harbor. the pollen count today, if you are sneezing, the pollen count is in a higher range. it is mostly tree pollen. the mold spore count is way up there because of the rain on tuesday. here is the weather set up, a big area of low pressure stalled out in the atlantic, blocking the flow in the atmosphere. we just happen to be in a good spot as far as the atmosphere set up is concerned. it has nowhere to go so it will stick around for a couple of days. you can see the low-level clouds coming in off the water. there is no precipitation in that cloud deck. some heavy thunderstorms down in

one. the wind will become an off the water so the temperatures will stay in the 70's at all the beaches over the weekend. the rip current risk is in the moderate range. the seven-day forecast, going through father's day, no humidity, temperature is below average. great stuff and then early next week things will change a little bit. we will get up close to 90 by wednesday and thursday. >> we begin tonight consumer alert with a look at wall street. in the report says central banks in europe are ready to pump some money into the system if needed. the dow jones gained 156 points, the nasdaq closed up 18 and the s&p closed 14 points up.

there could be a casino in national harbor in prince george's county. bush says he met with an executive from mgm and a harbor developer. bush ads not to read too much into this because officials still have a lot to weigh in on before allowing gaming in prince george's county. this should come as no surprise to parents of college-age students here it is causing more to send your son or daughter to college. according to reports by the department of education, the average tuition at a four-year public university increased between 2008 and 2010. one of the most important factors in the increase is the cut in higher education spending last year. the report also says college still remains one of the best

to help the wounded service members around the country. lowell melser has details. >> and all-american game for an all-american costcause. 24 sanaa nonstop lacrosse, all in part to try to help our wounded soldiers -- 24 hours of nonstop lacrosse. tyler and his fellow classmates came up with a great idea, to figure out how to do something they love all raising money for a great cause. shooed out for soldiers is a 24-shot lacrosse game to benefit the wounded warriors project which helps folks like ryan major, a towson high-school graduate who lost both his legs in iraq back in november 2006. >> it makes me proud to serve a country that has this much support for wounded veterans and
