all pailed $40,000 each to attend the exclusive get-together. earlier in the day the president and challenger mitt romney were both in ohio and both a little more down to earth talking about the economy and the middle class. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: for the first time on the same day the president and the challenger went to ohio for dueling speeches. barack obama with students, worried about the economy on his watch. >> we're all just trying to get a job. we're all just trying to get a future. >> let's put some folks to work right here at home. >> reporter: no major new initiatives but a passionate repeat of famed obama themes, taxing the rich, not cutting, spending. >> in an age where we know high skills. now's not the time to scale back our commitment to education. >> reporter: he warned a romney win would mean more gridlock. >> this election is your chance to break that stalemate.

if you want to give the policies of the last decade another try, then you should vote for mr. romney. >> reporter: with the president in democratic-leaning cleveland, mitt romney was in conservative cincinnati, mocking the obama claim of economic progress. >> oh, really. go check on that and talk is cheap. action speaks very loud. and if you want to see the results of his economic policies, look around ohio, look around the country, and you'll see that a lot of people are hurting. >> reporter: boosting by $10 million from one las vegas billionaire, team mitt romney's advertising campaign is bigger than team obama. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. now for the trial of former penn state coach jerry sandusky charged with 52 counts is moving faster than expected.

the prosecution is now expected to rest its case on monday. nbc's brian mooar reports. >> reporter: the last of eight young men accusing former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky took the witness stand to deliver the most graphic allegations of sexual abuse yet. known as victim number nine he said he was 11 when he was abused many times in the family sandusky home. he said he screamed for help and later wanted to tell someone but feared no one would listen. the boy's name was on an address list later found on a list of sandusky's findings. >> given the compelling testimony given this week, the defense will be hard-pressed to overcome the case r also on day four investigators said sandusky admit back in 1998 that he had showered with young boys but he denied it was sexual.

former state police investigator ronald schrepler said he was contacted by a moe who said sandusky touched her 11-year-old son in a penn state shower. that victim is now 25-year-old bible college graduate. he told the court sandusky tickle and bear hugged him in the shower and told him, quote, i'm going to squeeze your guts out. the jury also heard from a 25-year-old national guard soldier he was abused dozens of times yet still saw sandusky as a father figure. brian mooar, nbc news, bellefonte, pennsylvania. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. faulty brakes on garbage truck created one giant mess. he lost control when he was unable to stop a truck from rolling down a hilly street. it sent one car careening into a home. no one inside the vehicle or the home suffered any injuries. a four-alarm fire forced

houston residents in a five-mile raid yum to stay indoors. flames ripped through a warehouse contained chemicals to clean up oil spills. more than 50 screws battled for hours before putting it out. a moving job caused quite a commotion. drivers thought they were watching an alien invasion when they spotted what seemed to be a ufo being towed. they found it was an unmanned vehicle. the u.s. army thought of a sweet way to celebrate its 230th birthday at the pentagon. made up of a wooden frame and 5,000 cupcakes. the army's top brass were impressed but one joked tanks and cupcakes don't belong in the same sentence in the army. probably true.

and now for a look at your national and regional weather, here's nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. bill, good morning. happy father's day. >> are you going to watch my kids? >> just ship them. >> we first have to get there. we still have some problems out there this morning that we're dealing with as you're heading out the door and on your way to work. thunderstorms have rolled last night from minnesota to iowa and they also dyed off around omaha. most of the heavy rains have been toward topeka and lawrence. to the south, though, still some very tissue weather south of wichita. tulsa and around oklahoma city, thunderstorms have been plaguing you for about the half hour or so. that's where we could have travel delays, especially on interstate 95. high pressure protects the eastern seaboard. really from atlanta northward up through new england, great weather. it's going to get steamy and hot

good morning and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines this morning. united nations observers were finally able to reach a desertded syrian town where they found smouldering buildings, looted shops and smashed cars, but a death toll is unclear because the bodies have either been removed or buried. in egypt protesters took to the streets after that country's highest court dissolved parliament, saying it was elected illegally. the court also ruled that a former official under official hosni mubarak can compete in this weekend's presidential election. a government report

estimates the cost of raising a child up until last year to age 17 will be $235,000 including housing, food, expenses and education. actor kevin costner won his court fight in a lawsuit filed by actor stephen baldwin over his investment in a oil clean-up system ee veltually purchased by bp. baldwin claimed he was duped out of millions from that deal. in northwest china a sand storm caused big problems on the road with visit bltd down to a few feet. the sand knocked down trees and did major damage to farms. and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opened at 12, 651 after zooming 155. the s&p rose 14. the nikkei was up a fraction

in the postseason. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. the heat made some changes, chris bosh got the start, and miami evened the series. here we go, game two nba finals started out like game one. dwyane wade with one of his four. like tuesday, the heat held the lead the entire game. cashed in at the bank, got the jumper to fall. he had 30. forced a turnover. russell westbrook found kevin durant. knocked down the three. oklahoma city under two. under a minute to play. could durant bring them all the way back? no. lebron was all over him. questionable noncall. no whistle. he held on to win it, 100-96. after being swept by the yankees the mets did some spring cleaning of their own. they swept the rays in tampa. kirk knew enheight ripped one to north. they won with a 9-6 win.
