from natalie at the news desk. >> good morning, you guys, once again. in the news this morning, testimony winding down in a child sex abuse trial of former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. on tuesday sandusky's wife took to the stand in his defense. dottie sandusky said she remembered most of the eight men who accused her husband as abusing them as children but did not see him have any inappropriate contact with them. the case could go to the jury as early as tomorrow. you heard summer arrive today with searing temperatures in much of the country. forecasters say it will be in the mid to upper 90s from washington up to boston, but the humidity will make it feel more like 100. the heat extends from the midwest to the northeast. republican mitt romney says florida senator marco rubio is being thoroughly vetted for vice president saying reports he isn't being vetted are false. romney made the comment as he prapd up a five-day six-state bus tour.

meantime president obama is back at the white house after attending it is g-20 summit in mexico, a meeting that focused largely on europe's financial crisis. former egyptian president hosni mubarak is said to be clinging to life in a coma but off life support. he suffered a stroke in prison. he's serving life in prison for failing to stop the killing of protesters during last year's uprising. a new york photographer has filed an assault complaint against actor alec baldwin claiming baldwin punched him in the face and threatened to knock his teeth out. it happened after the actor and his bride-to-be picked up their marriage license and were met by photographers outside. baldwin later claimed no one punched anyone. new research suggests growing up with dogs may help protect a child's health. researchers from university of san francisco found houses with dogs may protect against a common childhood respiratory virus called rsv. other studies suggest it may

a second question would be, what is to stop me from opening up an online business and qualifying for the self-employed rate? >> sharon? >> sandy, well, you live in new york. like those of us that live in new york know, everything is more expensive. the thing i need to tell you about health insurance coverage. it's cheaper in new york but may not be the same in illinois or california. you may get lower premiums in the state and different for individuals versus self-employment coverage. that's something to consider. in fact, you're talking about trying to become an entrepreneur to get a lower premium on your health insurance. that may not be the reason. they are going to want to see you've been doing this peribusi for a period of time. the thing to consider if you're looking around, get a high deductible, get hsa, health

school right away? i say this, because in my view grad school is to forward your career and make potentially more money. you said yourself you're not quite sure at the end of this program you're going to end up with a job. consider an alternative solution which is potentially go work one or two years, some savings you can apply to additional loan payments. at the end if you don't end up with a job, have you a job to fall back on. take your grants, apply to college debt, wipe it out and that feels fantastic. if you're intent on going back to school right now. do two things. look at fellowship programs and additionally public service loans for the program potentially get some money. make sure you secure that part-time job so you can cover your living expenses. good luck with all that. >> good luck. we want to thank jean, sharon, and alexa for helping us out this morning. appreciate it. still to come, we've got a baby boom in our studio.

barbecue. good morning la la. >> good morning. >> they are healthy. >> yes, they are. when i go to a barbecue, they are delicious but they start packing on chips, ribs, all that other stuff. my secret, i usually take a salad with me and pack it with a bunch of good, healthy stuff. make it easy and simple obviously because i'm always in a hurry. i start on that first and do have -- >> hamburger. >> let's get started. you have a brown rice salad. it's warm. >> brown rice. tomatoes, red onion. i like to use red onion because it's not as strong. some lime juice. i'm going to add garlic salt, cilantro and have you tier that up. serrano peppers, if you don't want to make it spicy, remove this inner lining with the seeds and all that other stuff or put it on the side for somebody who wants to spice it up a little

bit. >> good. >> i cook the brown rice. brown rice is just basically white rice that hasn't been polished. extra fiber, you're going to fill up so you're not going to nosh so much. >> right. canned lentils and canned corn. >> when you do buy for a party you have 20 different things. i like to recycle. >> quinoa. >> fills you up, fiber, great for you. cucumbers. >> chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions. >> empty calories. this is vinegar for flavor, cilantro, anti-inflammatory. >> a little lemon juice. >> smoked paprika and then the quinoa and we're done. >> that's it. >> this is one of those things even if you did the quinoa the night before you toss it. >> it keeps for a while. >> you get that nice little softness of the quinoa, the crunchiness of the cucumber and freshness and tomato, wonderful, beautiful colors. >> side salads here with avocado. tell me about this salad. that looks amazing. >> this is another way to incorporate what you did

barbecue but make it healthy but making it part of a meal. this is a big meal platter. some chicken i marinaded with lime and cilantro, black beans, grilled corn, tomatoes, radish, just anything you want to add. then keep the dressing light. >> you've got dressing, it's a yogurt, what's in it. >> just a little greek yogurt with chipotle and some onions and garlic. >> garnish it on top. >> thank you so much. we've got some animals going wild here. we're going to get to that. a face apparently only a mother could love. more baby animals live in the studio. don't worry, ronnie, doesn't bite. first today on nbc.

basically they are anteaters. they eat termites. >> the two worlds collide, who wins? >> the aardvark. >> that's the mama kangaroo. >> we're hoping the joey inside might stick its head out. the joey inside is about five-month-old. it's developed from the size -- do you guys know the story when a kangaroo is firstborn, they are actually underdeveloped. they are the size of like a jelly bean. >> that's crazy. they have to climb on their own into the pouch. >> are you sure it's in there. >> i saw it suckle. i looked. >> if she'll stand up a little bit, i'm not sure if she'll be interested in this milk here. >> not after the aardvark. >> you can see the joey kicking around in there oftentimes. then the joey will stick its head out when it wants. about this age is when it starts

popping in and out of the pouch. >> how often? how many other babies can fit in the pouch? >> you know what's really cool about kangeroos, they can have one in dia pod, not yet developing. one in the pouch and one out of the pouch. >> screech owls here. >> look how adorable. >> that's the surrogate mom right there. she's helping to take care of these two little rescues. these are screech owls. they are found in northern america here. >> they live up to their name? >> actually they don't screech. it's a weird kind of name for that. surrogate parents help rescue the animals too little to be released into the wild. we did that with one of the sea otters. came in as an orphan, raised it up, now back into a program to be a surrogate mom for others to be released into the wild. >> this one we're afraid of,
