fatalities as a result of the storm. three of them are heat related, two of those three involving seniors. >> this is the primary reason why the power is still out. traffic lights are not working and people are hard pressed to find a place to cool off. but the major issues for us right now, medical facilities are owned generator power. we have 34 medical facilities, nursing homes and assisted living centers, dialysis centers that are running on generator power. >> would probably have 500 intersections across the state without power. now that number has been cut in half, but there is still a significant number in montgomery county.

power going to come back on? lowell melser joins us and i hope you have a couple of answers for us. >> i wish i had a magic want and could make it all better for folks, but unfortunately, that is not the case. as we speak, according to the b g e website, more than 213,000 people are without power in the area, but progress is being made. an example here in waverly within the last hour, a crew from upstate new york finish the majority of its work here. you can see debris left behind from a tree that was resting on a power line. the still appears to be some work to be done, as power has not been restored to this neighborhood, despite the progress that was made. workers told us earlier people just have to be patient. >> it is what we do. it is like a doctor gets out of bed in the middle of the warning to go deliver a baby because that is what he does.

when there is a power problem, we respond. >> dave is one of 1400 utility members from their -- from 15 different states and canada it came to baltimore to help with an epic project, along with an additional 1200 bge staff members. they had the exhausting task of turning on the lights for more than 14,000 people. >> most people don't know what is involved in getting the power back on. of course they are anxious to get it on as soon as possible, but we have to do it in a very safe manner to ensure that everyone gets to go back home. >> he said he and his fellow crew members are up to the task, and that the market's key. >> a good crew, we are working together to get this power back on. we have good guys who work long

hours, and we work hard. >> sometimes they travel with tree removal crews in tow. it ranges from very easy to very difficult. workers say they are working as fast as they can, but safety has got to be a priority. >> they may think we are going to slow. you have to, because the voltage that we have to work with will kill us in a heartbeat, so we just have to be careful. >> as far as some of the hardest-hit areas, anne arundel county, about 40,000 people are without power. baltimore county, about 69,000. baltimore city, 61,000 people, and over in howard county, about 16,000 customers are without power this evening. b g e says that as far as the like -- as when the lights will come back on, it could take a couple days until next weekend. lowell melser, wbal-tv 11 news.

>> during a press conference today, mayor stephanie rawlings- blake reported that 20 by% of the city is without power right now, and with the next few days expected to still be hot, she urges checking with those in your neighborhood who are most at risk for heat stroke. >> we know it is annoying, frustrated, and hot as heck. we need to get over that and take care are vulnerable citizens. i really need people to work with us to check on vulnerable residents. >> the mayor said it is likely that the city will open up some overnight shelters and that more information should be released soon. >> we also received an update from baltimore county police calling for local drivers to be patient during this time on the road. the focus for police is the

status of the roadways. >> we are looking at possibly 24 roads and intersections that are either closed or without power, red lights for example, and officers are covering these locations as we speak. >> moeller county police officers talked about the cooling centers in the area, including senior centers and libraries. water is available at our departments, but remember to bring your own containers to transport it. >> keep in mind when there are no lights working at intersections, it is supposed to be treated like a four way stop. >> a vast amount of damage has been reported throughout the state. >> captain roy taylor and skyteam 11 have been tracking the damage all day and they have some interesting and heartbreaking videos.

>> we talked about how crews from out of state are coming into the state of maryland to assist with getting the power back on. this area here, which is then middle river, is the staging area for crews from out of state. it is also an area for resupply as. we have been watching the bring in new electrical poles that are set up and going out into the field. the crews that are coming in here right now, the ge has set up a facility for making sure they are supplied and fed, plus the fact that they actually make arrangements for hotels for them to sleep. they cannot work until they drop, that would be too dangerous. they were a certain number of hours and then take a break, continue working, and then have to have a certain number of hours of sleep and rest before

they are allowed to come back and deal with the power lines. as you can imagine, just pushing the wrong button or switch could be devastating an extremely dangerous for somebody to ended early get killed trying to resupply power back to the neighborhood. we have been watching drugs work their way into this facility here in middle river and we will continue to find more as we continue. >> if you have the opportunity and the power to do so, we would love for you to show us what you are seeing out there. there is just so much damage across the area, including huge trees down. if you don't have power or know someone who doesn't, track updates on your smart phone with the wbal app.

>> temperatures are still warm, no doubt about that. another hot day across the region. a lot of sunshine, but as far as getting some of the moisture out of the atmosphere, 95 downtown, 92 officially at bwi marshall. the relative humidity is only 29%, and that makes a huge difference as far as the heat goes. 70 and 80 out in the allegany in garrett county. the least we are not talking about heat advisory and he warned for this evening. the futurecast shows clear skies overnight and heading early into tomorrow morning. the threat of severe thunderstorms is not with us tonight. he and humidity and more thunderstorm activity in the seven-day forecast. more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> right now is the time to take some important steps to protect your property. lisa robinson has some tips for you.

their risk for basal cell carcinoma. it has also been linked to a low risk for diabetes and parkinson's disease. experts say caffeine appears to be the agent lowering the risk for carcinoma. other foods hiring caffeine lowered the risk for skin cancer, but decaffeinated drinks did not. babies born just a few weeks early are more likely to test poorly in grade school. a new study looked at over 100,000 babies born between 37 and 41 weeks' gestation period of birth records were matched up -- with their third grade math and reading scores later in life. those found born at 37 and 38 weeks or more likely to have reading impairment and score lower on math tests. experts say the fetal brain is rapidly developing during the last weeks of pregnancy, and an early delivery could disrupt that process. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer.

>> satellite imagery and radar imagery shows big storms again early this morning rumbling through. this is what the radar and satellite looked like at 5:00 a.m. this morning. rolling down toward ocean city, they went through quickly. another hot day for sure. the good news is behind that weather disturbance this morning, drier air came pushing down 10. the relative humidity has not been as severe today as the last few days. 92 degrees at the airport but the relative humidity is only about 29%. temperatures are still above normal for most areas in the state, but it is drier, at least. 82 uncomfortable down at the beach, 79 in the garrett county mountains, but everybody east of the mounds are west of the

shoreline, another sizzling day with temperatures in the ninth of the. it looks like the next six days or so will continue to have highs at least in the 90's. the good news for the overnight and into early tuesday morning, the future cash showing clear skies. it looks like we don't have to worry about thunderstorms in the area. tonight will be relatively pleasant with temperatures about normal. 63 in the suburbs, 73 in downtown baltimore for the overnight low. hot, humid weather is not going away anytime soon. denver is 99, kansas city, 97. that is where the air will be coming from as we go into the fourth of july holiday. a pretty good chance for some storms around the region on the fourth of july. enjoy tomorrow, it should be mostly sunny day until a couple isolated storms pop-up at the ended the day.

the next surge of hot air comes rolling through tomorrow. a line of storms dropping down through the area wednesday evening. fireworks displays might be complicated by some hit and miss thunderstorms in the area. that line of storms passes out of us and we may be able to drop the mid-level a little bit of others that. tomorrow, 91-96 degrees. the second consecutive day with temperatures in the 90's. out on the bay, light winds and waves about 1 foot for most of the day, but watch out for the storms developing throughout the day. if you are going up in amounts for the fourth of july we can, you have cooler temperatures but a 40% chance of hit and miss thunderstorms each day. scattered storms on wednesday and a little less humid on thursday. the seven-day, there you see that string of nine's continues.

phelps was scratching the 200 meter freestyle from the olympics, leaving him with seven events to swim at the london banks. phelps called a smart move. it qualified for a total of five individual events in london and he is expected to race in all three relays. however, with preliminaries' for the 200 freestyle falling on the same day as a hotly contested four hundred meter freestyle relay, the coach was concern that else would not be fresh for that event. last night, phelps explain why these trials have been crucial to his preparation. >> i was able to see that i could handle this kind of pressure at this level in multiples. this gives us a lot of confidence, and we have a couple of weeks to improve. >> in london, in addition to

a man suffers serious, life- threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle along ridge road in anne arundel county. that incident happened early sunday morning. police say it appears the 64- year-old named stephen eugene shenefiel was struck by a creek 1993 nissan that is believed to have a damaged passenger side of her. >> many are still without power, slammed by powerful storms and then tormented by monday, hot weather. they are waiting while crews worked to fix the mess.

>> fire crew slowly gaining control of the that although canyon fire in colorado. last week it was ranked as the state's worst in history. today it is reported to be 55% contained. state authorities said the main concern now, forecasters calling for thunderstorms with winds up to 40 miles per hour. they do expect some problems -- has been burning since last weekend and there is no word yet of the exact cause.

>> good news for the door to a woman diagnosed with the rare flesh eating disease. after a two-month long struggle, she was released from the hospital this morning and is headed for an inpatient rehabilitation clinic. she sustained injuries from a zibeline fall -- a zipline falll. she will spend the next couple of months learning to maneuver with a wheelchair before moving on to prosthetic limbs. doctors are amazed with her spirit and speedy recovery, which has defied their initial prognosis. >> today marks the 70th anniversary of the day a million earhart disappeared during a flight around the world. her journey was supposed to make history, but instead became a historic mystery when she vanished. the executive director took off

way above the normal high of 87, but at least is not quite as hot. the record high goes back to 1901 when we hit 103 degrees on july 2. the 16th time this year we have topped 90 degrees at the airport. the normal is eight, so we are well ahead of last year and have doubled but not reviewed the normal number of 90-degree days so far as we ventured into july. much more comfortable on the coast or up in the mountains. roanoke is at 94 degrees, charlottesville at 93, and cleveland at 90 degrees. expected 90's to continue for the next several days. if you get up toward deep creek lake, they have some nice weather up there, 77 degrees. skies are clear as we head toward tuesday morning, no big

foxgloves plants from home depot. local home depot had a warning that said not for human or animal consumption, but the ones that loews did not have a warning. we went straight to home depot to ask what they are doing to alert consumers to the dangers of the plant. home depot says they are rolling out new labels with similar warnings to the one we found. on the close as they are not required to label like plants. >> be prepared, know what is toxic and what is indoors and out. it is best to do your homework before you decide to fill your barden derek texted and todd u.d. hit the road for the july 4 holiday comes word that a couple of things you have heard are simply not true. some of you may have heard that by built -- by filling up your car when it is khalilzad, you

from the south baltimore learning center with high-school diplomas last week. for 52-year-old robert burgess, it was especially sweet. >> it is like a dream came true, something i always was destined for. it was just an amazing feeling. >> robert dropped out of high school in 1976 and got caught up in a life of drugs. once he straightened out, got a job, got married, joined a church, and wanted to get his life on a different track. >> i believe this was the stepping stones of getting a better job and a better career. >> robert's story is a common one. the nonprofit of results of any age a second chance at an education for classes, training, and one-on-one tutoring.

trees were toppled, homes were damaged, some people are even burying loved ones. this is a live look from north baltimore, one example of the extensive damage in our neighborhood. lowell melser has a check on when the lights may be back on for residents and business owners. we begin with david collins with the state's emergency response. >> sadly, the death toll in maryland from the storm and heat wave has risen to six. the latest fatalities are all adults from baltimore city, wicomico, and under county. >> we have now -- and montgomery county. >> we have now had six fatalities as a result of this storm. three of them are he related, two of those three involved seniors. >> this is the primary reason why the power is still out. why the power is still out.
