hit 100 degrees in downtown baltimore this afternoon. we are kaline back little in the city -- we are cooling back a little in the city. it is hot out there, it feels like 106 in downtown baltimore. the heat advisory goes until 9:00. thunderstorms have been popping up. isolated storms in parts of frederick and carroll county. the most severe storms expected to be out to the west of us in garrett county. we love to keep a close eye on the radar. i will be back in a few minutes with the forecast. >> plenty of people will be packing the inner harbor tonight for fourth of july festivities, and city police will have a prominent presence.

jayne miller joins us live with details on the stepped up security. >> you can really see it right now. in the past 20 minutes or so, we started seeing all these extra police officers arriving. they are all in uniform tonight. there are detectives on patrol tonight. all the police who are here are in uniform. joining me is the acting police commissioner, anthony barksdale. we were with you yesterday when you announced your said the plan. do you feel some pressure? >> no, no pressure. i believe the men and women of the borrowing to come through. -- the men and women are going to come through.

>> what is the key to having a successful night? >> the key to us is to be there and be visible and be alert. look for any problems and get on those problems because review before they become anything big, and just be there for the public. >> it will be a large crowd. you are using the fencing this year for the fourth of july. >> it helps set boundaries, so you don't have citizens going into the streets. we can control the movement of the crowd. >> how can people help maintain order when the fireworks are over? >> try to be our eyes and ears. the department is not asking you to take any action, but if you see something, say something. get on your cellphone or whatever. there are plenty of crops down

pavilion this afternoon performing for the people who were out here. right around 7:00, the u.s. naval academy band will take the stage, and the fireworks began at 9:30 and are expected to last about 18 minutes from that point. if you are headed to downtown, you want to leave with plenty of time. officials are encouraging people to take public transportation. >> public transportation is a great option. the light rail will remain open one hour after the fireworks show. just think about it before you come, so you can have fun. parking will be the least of your worries when you get here. >> there are plenty of parking garages in the area. we would love to see pictures of your celebration on our website, wbaltv.com.

sheldon dutes, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the number of households and businesses without power does continue to shrink, but not fast enough for those who are still suffering. >> bge report 75,000 customers still in the dark, but authorities are now providing what they call an estimated time when power is expected to be restored. there is the number on your screen. david collins joins us live from towson with an update. i know lot of folks have probably already started calling at. >> there is a lot of this going on, but also help the

skepticism. neighbors are helping each other here, but being power deprived is getting on everyone's last an hour. they are hot, uncomfortable, and irritated. many are looking for distraction's either at a pool, mall, or parade. politicians on parade. it is an annual tradition for gop candidates. governor martin o'malley canceled his public appearances to deal with the power outage emergency. he is monitoring recovery and pushing for quicker results from the state's emergency operations center. but for those without power, patients, like electricity, has run out. >> we have a problem with the tree down here that has taken out all our lines.

>> the level of frustration. the power outage problem is obvious, yet so far she and her neighbors are the only ones who seem to have noticed it. rebecca is tired of being power deprived. >> i am having to go to my knees's house to shampoo my hair. i am going to charge my phone over there and use her computer for a few minutes to see what has been going on on my computer, and i am running out of batteries. >> the heat wave makes the power outage unbearable. >> she has no power, hot water, or food. all had to be thrown out. >> it is hard to endure at night. all of us have been feeling sick and having lightheaded

this, just feeling nauseated. >> generator noises and other constant reminder that things are not back to normal. power cord still snake from house to house. frank borrowed one from a friend whose lights did come back on. he said keeping it going cost about $30 a day. >> neighbors here are a little skeptical about the hot line providing an estimate about when the power will come back on. they'll have their fingers crossed it will be around 8:30 this evening. >> many residents are also wondering when they will get their power back in their homes. for some in anne arundel county, a good portion of the storm damage has not yet been cleared by cleanup crews.

>> we have a tree down on a line, which is still hanging on the line. it is preventing people -- it is getting to the point where they cannot drive up the road now with their vehicle because they cannot take it under the tree. >> i have been on the generator since saturday morning. it is costing me about $80 a day in fuel. >> this is making it tough to go forward with their original july forth plans. they say the entire community has been helping each other to get through this outage. >> a man is in serious condition after it the bucket truck he was driving overturned. it happened this morning in annapolis. the crash remains under

county. from the politicians to the fans, it is a great way to show patriotism. catonsville residence planted themselves in the chairs they set up weeks ago for today's parade there. it started at montrose avenue and frederick road. catonsville has held this parade for the last 66 years. in towson, this parade kicked off at 10:30 this morning and ended when it reached york road. >> it would not be the fourth of july without a nauseating display of gluttony. the country's top competitive peter's carried out the traditional hot dog eating competition and this year, once again, joey chaz not did not

dropping down towards frostburg and parts of western maryland, it looks like that is where the most severe weather will be. this line of storms has the chance of producing damaging winds and heavy downpours. there is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect from garrett county west into west virginia and the extreme southwestern corner of pennsylvania. the orange boxes are severe thunderstorm warnings up in the mountains to our north and west. not too much as far as that goes around here. 100 degrees in downtown baltimore. the 100-degree record stands. right now, 94 in parkville,

colombia in the mid-90's. 91 degrees on the beach town of ocean city. it feels like 107 in frederick and 106 in downtown baltimore. the heat advisory remains in effect until about an hour or so after sunset. watch out, there may be a few isolated thunderstorms tracking through, but looks like skies will clear out nicely by tomorrow morning. scattered storms for the fireworks displays. the sunsets at 8:36 this evening. high pressure on the gulf coast pushing that pressure in. detroit hit 100 degrees today.
