>> good afternoon, everyone. our big story this afternoon -- a police-involved shooting in baltimore county leaving one man dead. various following the story and will be joining us from police headquarters later on. meanwhile, another shooting investigation is under way, this one in carroll county.

police say early this morning, one man was shot and killed while another was hurt. a 24-year-old is in police custody, accused of first-degree murder. we're told the incident happened in the 2000 block of liberty road. no word yet on the condition of the injured victim or a possible motive. police in prince george's county are looking for two masked men responsible for robbing a gas station attendant at gunpoint. authorities released this surveillance video, which shows the man jumping over the counter and demanding money. one of them and strikes the clerk over the head with a handgun and forces them to open the register. the pair was able to flee from the store with an unknown amount of cash. a baltimore city police detective is no longer on the force. this the latest piece of news we are following from the city police department. prosecutors claim an employee of the local grocery store rang up nearly $400 worth of groceries

for only $100 for her mother. a security guard saw the entire transaction. the 22-year-old veteran of the force was required to resign on thursday after admitting to sec charges. she and her daughter received probation before judgment. howard county police say an employee of a columbia nonprofit is under investigation for possible improper activity. authorities said police served a warrant at the housing cooperation. were told no one has been arrested or charged, but investigators are gathering evidence. >> wells fargo bank will take a number of major cities including baltimore millions of dollars in the settlement agreement. the companies accused of targeting minorities with predatory lending practices. under the terms of the agreement, baltimore will dismiss a 2008 lawsuit, and wells fargo will provide $4.5 million as part of a lending assistance program, and $3

million for foreclosure initiatives. the company will also lend $425 million for home buying in baltimore over the next five years. >> this is a case about real people -- african-american and latino -- who suffered real harm as a result of wells fargo's discriminatory lending practices. >> 34,000 victims nationwide were identified in the suit. 1000 from the baltimore area will receive a total of $2.5 million in restitution. >> we started the day today with clouds and a few sprinkles. the sun is trying to burn through, and most of these wrinkles and showers are to the west of is now showing up on radar. we have a live you here. it looked a little threatening, but i think a lot of that rate will stay to the west of us. we are not immune to a range and state and perhaps more so tomorrow. that is perhaps with the

forecast for the weekend was about. will talk about it in just a minute. stick around. >> thank you. a police-involved shooting in baltimore county leaving one man dead. we go live to city police headquarters to continue the story we broke this morning. what can you tell us? >> the man who was shot and killed has been identified as 48-year-old ronald cox jr. officers executed a search warrant in front area of the county, looking for evidence in connection with an investigation into an attempted murder. police said this was a tactical entry and officers were yelling as they moved through the house. they say ronald was armed with a large martial arts kind of sort and swung it so hard it damaged the shield that an officer was carrying -- a large martial arts kind of sword.

>> officers opened the bedroom door, and a man attacked them with a sword. the officer opened fire after his bunker was struck by the sword. >> two others were in the house when the tactical unit moved in. both of those people have been arrested, but police have not told us exactly what the charges are against the two people. the officer who fired the shot is a 17-year veteran. he is a sign to the tactical unit and was involved in the previous shooting, we are told. he is on administrative leave, and all of this is still under investigation. much more for you tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. >> thank you. members of congress are once again ramping up the fight over taxing and spending, but this time, it is more than rhetoric. if congress cannot reach some sort of agreement by the end of the year, taxes go up for

everyone and across the board spending cuts kick in. >> on capitol hill, the house is divided on extending the bush- arab tax cuts. >> you are prepared to hold hostage working americans by saying if the richest people in america might have a little bit of a tax increase, then everybody else is going to get a tax increase. >> holding hostage working families is denying them a job. it is about jobs. >> president obama says he will veto a bill that keeps the tax cuts for the wealthy, but an even bigger tax cut is looming. congress has until december 31 to agree on a budget or deep, automatic cuts kick in for the domestic and military budgets. >> chances are we are going over a fiscal cliff. i hate to say it, but i think that is probably right. >> for now, the senate is bubbling over plans to cut taxes for businesses. >> the rest of the country which

>> the bomb squad is investigating a suspicious device found on board a plane in new york city thursday. u.s. air marshal's discovered the device on board a delta plane at kennedy international. police say the plane was evacuated to look before it was scheduled to take off to madrid, prompting the bomb squad to be called. it is unknown how many people were on board that plane. >> president obama in virginia today, kicking off a two-day tour. the president will discuss taxes

and to urge congress to prevent a scheduled tax increase for those who earn less than $250,000 a year. he will be holding events in virginia beach, hampton, and roanoke. brace yourself -- or at least your electronics. radiation from a solar flare is expected tomorrow. nasa released this image from thursday. the flare is part of the son's regular 11-year cycle, which is anticipated to reach its peak next year -- part of the sun's 11-year cycle. this flare should have a minimal impact on communication systems and power grids. that is good news. still to come, a new perception of the dollar store. plus, a cancer virus? how researchers are turning it into a cancer-fighting machine. >> there is rain in these clouds. we will look at the radar and see if they are coming our way.

helped boost the housing market this year. if you are in the house-buying market, it seems there are plenty of new homes to choose from. new-home starts are up nearly 30% from a year ago. economists say the increase is encouraging because it puts contractors back to work and pumps money into local communities. but they say increased new home construction is in its early stage and still less than it was prior to the housing crash. a few years ago, some people would not think of going to dollar stores. there was even a stigma associated with shopping there, but with the shaky economy, that attitude has changed, and so have the stores. >> discount dollar stores. it was a refuge for the economically challenged during the recession. now become the story of choice. >> saving 37% on things like cereal and bathroom cleaner, oatmeal, cranberry juice cocktail. >> "shop smart" magazine says

the popularity of dollar stores is justified. it is part of the non-profit commuter -- consumer reports organization and just conducted a survey that found three out of four women shop dollar stores more often nowadays because they are more mainstream. >> they are not second run. they are the same products. when we're talking about the national brand, it is the same stuff. >> some had even launched their own brands like family dollar's family gourmet, which cost on average 25% less than name brands. >> there's no reason to think they are overruns, either. they are being made specially for the dollar store. >> she says all of this is by design, the dollar stores are making the most of an opportunity. >> they have revamped the store, trying to bust that perception of dollars for being this kind of junky made, secod-run

products. we just picked up some clouds. they are a little thicker this morning. there are a few sprinkles showing up on rate on now. a couple of sprinkles and a real quick shower. not enough to with the pavement. -- not enough to wet the pavement. scattered showers and sprinkles in parts of western virginia. the rains get a little heavier. we might talk more about that in a minute, but let's take a look. we have heard a lot of people sniffling, and the pollen count is not very extreme. the total pollen count is a moderate range of 10, so if you are sensitive to a couple of specific things, i suppose so.

the mold count is in the moderate range. temperature-wise -- we are warming up, but clouds are kind of inhibiting things a little bit. we mentioned the ocean city temperature, really nice on the beach. would there have been heavier clouds and a couple of showers here and there, it is only in the 60's. again, the clouds are thicker out there. they have had some rain showers in west virginia and in too far western maryland. the dew points -- there is the comfort value. we are in the green. a couple of locations have gotten into the 60's in the day. at least we have relatively dry air. we are dealing with a lot humidity.

clouds have thinned out. they are not gone, but enough to let the sun tried to eat us up a little bit. clouds are heavier out in west virginia. these clouds are producing rain showers. quite a few echoes and some moderate to heavy rain shower activity. a little weather disturbance moving through, and that may help to increase our range chances a bit this afternoon, but i think a lot of this rain will be up to the west of us. still, that stalled front to the south. a cool front of to the west. the most significant chance of rain is not coming until next week, but we will be bothered by a few little weak disturbances coming off the bottom of this area of high pressure. this is where our high works against us. a couple of these little waves will come through over the weekend. each brings a slight range of shower. mostly cloudy today. a chance for a shower, but it is small.

in many cases, it may only be a sprinkle. less than 1-foot shop on the open waters of the bay. our futurecast shows the range up to the west. it kind of dries up, although we could pick up a few sprinkles or a quick shower. that will even be hard to with the pavement. tomorrow, a different story. in the morning, we could see a few scattered showers around the area. by afternoon, much higher chance of rain. still scattered showers. we get into sunday, the range and is a bit more scattered. it looks like tomorrow has the highest range chance. for ocean city, today, dry. 82 the high. chance of thunderstorms that the beach on saturday -- saturday and sunday. the main chance by fellow but on saturday. sunday, goes down a bit, but we really hang onto it by next
