some encouraging news in the battles against obesity and alzheimer's. the fda provided new diet drug and tools for early alzheimer's intervention. plus, the headaches continue as crews rushed to repair a broken water main. a breakthrough, a few inches of -- a breakthrough of a few inches of type causes massive repercussions. it ruptured yesterday afternoon just as the evening rush-hour got underway. like street will be closed for the next three weeks and east redwood street was also closed today. this is torn up pavement that continued to attack the patience of motorists around the heart of downtown baltimore. serious ripple effect for surrounding businesses. sheldon dutes leads 14 covered

with more on the financial fallout and details on how long it will take to get the area back to normal. >> we know it will take three weeks to repair the broken water main lines, but no telling how long it will take downtown businesses to officially bounceback from yesterday's water main break. it is too early to tell how big a financial hit will be for a lot of these businesses, but they have not come received too many complaints so far. -- have not received too many complaints so far. monica's hair salon is just around the corner from this construction site and she is already feeling the impact of the broken water main. >> i am waiting for 4:30 client and they are stuck in traffic. >> drivers have been forced to take alternate routes, creating gridlock traffic patterns in some parts of downtown.

>> normally it is fine, but this is ridiculous. >> it is a pain. >> officials say the water main that broke at the corner of light and lombard street was built in the late 1880. >> as an older eastern seaboard city, that is one of the things that we have to deal with on a regular basis. >> the department of public works things it will take about three weeks to replace the broken pipes and another aging one in the area. above-ground pipes are providing water to nearby businesses. seven businesses were impacted by the break, but so far the downtown business partnerships have not received too many complaints. monica worries about her clients. >> they are running late and we are trying to fit everybody in, knowing we are dealing with the

the trouble the city is trying to stay ahead of. there is always the potential of a disastrous water main break. >> basically the pipe is deteriorating rapidly. the whole project is replacing these three sections of pipe. yesterday a 20-inch water main broke at a key intersection. it was disruptive, but by no means unusual. cracking pipes are problems nationwide. a report published this year on the nation's aging infrastructure estimates of a trillion dollars will be required to update the country's drinking water system grew 2035. >> there is not likely to be a giant federal solution for the problem. what it comes down to is water rates. as we begin to reinvest in the

wbaltv.com. >> anyone traveling in eastern baltimore county this afternoon likely saw smoke billowing from a plant in essex. the black river wastewater treatment -- treatment plant was on fire. one firefighter had to be transferred to bayview for heat exhaustion. investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire. >> the search for a missing voter in harford county. investigators say he was swimming on the bush river with a friend sunday evening when he was swept away by the current. the friend was rescued by nearby residents. the murder over baltimore teenager is prompting community leaders to address what they are calling a double by s. homophobia in the black community. kerry cavanaugh is live with the latest.

change. final approval on the name change is expected in september. today governor martin o'malley says he believes there is a strong opportunity to resolve the issue of expanded gaming sooner than later. at issue is whether the tax on slot machine revenue should be lower. some house members have resisted the idea because lawmakers voted to raise the income tax on residents making more than $100,000 a year. the governors calling for a special session to push for a new casino in prince george's county and allow for the table games. sergeant james dixon was a member of the monfort marines on the first african-americans in the u.s. marine corps. today he brought his congressional gold medal back to the baltimore city police department to celebrate with his fellow officers and friends. >> i wanted to say something for

in the temperatures, a lot of time you get some bumpy weather and thunderstorms. about all that. by this weekend, you will be smiling. here is a look at high temperatures around the region today. 100 degrees again this afternoon. extending all the way from here back into the midwest, it was 103 in st. louis and 99 in chicago. 93 degrees in downtown baltimore at 11:00 at night. the dewpoints have come down a little bit from last night. that have settled back into the lower end of the 60's. this cold front has across

portions of southern canada and back into the new england states. it will not come racing through here and break the heat, it will take a couple of days to do it. you can see that thunderstorms lined up along that boundary right now. we will be in that zone by the evening hours tomorrow. we do not expect any thunderstorm activity. during the day tomorrow, the front gets a little closer and will drift into the northern part of pennsylvania. another line of thunderstorms will develop along that front and some of those could be strong or severe. the storm prediction senator thinks the best chance for severe weather is north of us, and pennsylvania and new jersey.

eventually they will make it into maryland. we will watch for the possibility of some bumpy weather at that time. during the day tomorrow, just hazy sunshine for the most part and another hot day. between 95-100 with another chance for thunderstorms late in the afternoon and during the evening. sunrise at 5:55. the southwest wind, waves that 1 foot and a water temperatures in the mid-80's. as we head into the weekend, things are going to change. the jet stream will take a little bit down to the south, and that is always good news for us. you will notice the difference as we go into the weekend. some of the computer models linder the rain into friday.
