severe threat is over tonight, but many people are dealing with the damaging effects. sheldon dutes has details on some house fires that may of been triggered by lightning strikes. first we will check in with tony on what is in store for the coming days. our most of the storms behind us? >> core right now. -- for right now. sometimes we have to pay the price with severe weather, and that is what happened at earlier this afternoon. there is nothing around baltimore right now but there are some storms in the mountains. those will stay out around charleston, west virginia. the bigger story is, we have broken the heat wave. that will take it down to 92 tomorrow. still hot, but better than today when we hit 104. hopefully we will get some much- needed rain in the next few

days. >> from heat related deaths to widespread power outages, the extreme heat wave has taken a toll on maryland. now is being blamed for two house buyers in anne arundel county. sheldon dutes has the latest part. >> firefighter from the anne arundel county fire department were kept busy tonight. >> it struck right at the corner of my house. it was scary. >> edward thomas was at home making dinner with his wife when a thunderstorm passed brute arnold. >> i looked out the back door and a bolt of lightning came down and hit the corner of the house by the electrical breaker. >> edward lost power and smelled smoke, but he and his wife got out of their home safely.

anne arundel county firefighters were on the scene of another fire in annapolis. the cause of this fire is still under investigation but officials think it may have started after lightning hit a metal conductor in the home and sparked a fire in the basement. one firefighter fell for the first floor, but no injuries were reported from this fire as well. fire officials say it is safer to stay indoors during a severe weather event. >> it is the safest place to be, obviously. but nature just works in strange ways. we cannot predict it. >> edward is surveying the property and memories that were destroyed by water damage. >> i cannot get in the house yet to see if anything can be salvaged. plus, again, we are alive. >> the red cross is helping some of the victims of this evening's

fires. again, no injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. sheldon dutes, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the oppressive heat has not slowed down efforts to repair the broken water main downtown. crews continued working to repair a 20-inch main break at lights and lombard street. assessment three years ago determined both lines were at high risk for rupture. officials say they are now taking steps to prevent similar situations in the future. critics of this year we will go from much less than 5 miles in terms of rehabilitation and replacement to 20 miles. that will increase until in five years, we will be doing 40 miles a year. >> this is vintage video of of 40-inch main break that happened at that same intersection back in january 1980.

appeals ruling. a temporary change for now, but considered a victory for law enforcement. in april, the maryland court of appeals ruled that police could no longer collected dna samples from suspects after arrest without a warrant. now supreme court chief justice john roberts has reversed that ruling, at least temporarily. a victory for maryland law enforcement. >> it is back to business as usual. >> the change was sparked by it or request by the supreme court to take a look at the case of alonzo king jr. the court of appeals ruled that his rights had been violated. >> the supreme court in essence took the position that until we have a chance to take a look at this, we are going to put the brakes on the court of appeals

decision. >> the order will remain in effect at least until king response to the state's petition to the supreme court. police can start collecting immediately, but the case still has a long way to go. >> they start collecting dna again tomorrow. the cases overturned, that is to say if the supreme court decides not to continue, it can be used. if they agree with the maryland court of appeals, it can be used. simple as that. they can collect it but they will still have to wait and see what the ultimate decision is before it will be of any value to them. >> several local law enforcement agencies praised the ruling today and the attorney general issued a statement saying we are encouraged by the decision to enter a stay. it may result in identifying

perpetrators in some of maryland's most horrific cases where dna was left at the scene of the crime. the state will be in effect until at least that date. >> mayor stephanie rawlings lake today announced a partnership that will help baltimore city police fight crime. the city watch committee partnership inc. database a public and private security that allows quickly identifying surveillance tape in proximity to crime scenes. >> it will support the police department efforts to further reduce crime in our neighborhoods. >> authorities in queen anne's county say a half-dozen marijuana plants for found at the scene of that brush fire last month. the sheriff office says the plants, some of which were burned, were turned over to the

county drug task force. natural resources officials confirmed there was evidence of a pot growing operation at the fire scene, but so far no arrests have been made. it is unclear if the fire was somehow related to the plants. several residents were forced from their homes. a prominent drug counselor in the region says he is seeing a dramatic shift in the use of opiates. deborah winger found out it is taking a deadly toll on the young people of suburbia. >> these women are bound by grief, loss, and heroin. all three mothers lost children to heroin. >> is an epidemic. why are we not hearing more about it? i wish i knew. >> they were not losers are outcasts or unpopular, just regular kids, according to family.

the complicated and painful road of addiction lines straight through suburbia. >> we gave her anything she wanted and she could have had anything she wanted. >> the support group says it receives calls every month from families looking for a zero way to cope with a loss of loved one who died from an overdose. governor martin o'malley pledged to have gambling legislation ready for lawmakers to review this friday, following a meeting with the baltimore city delegation that opposes plans to add a sixth casino in prince george's county. the support of the delegation is needed to pass a gaming bill if a special session as col. the governor has proposed mechanisms to offset any revenue loss because of increased competition. >> we believe we can divide up the money into percentages where

anne arundel would get its full expectation of money and baltimore city would get its full expectation of money. >> the city delegation will meet in a week to scrutinize the proposed gaming bill. the governor is expected to decide if a special session should be called within 10 days. the man charged with second- degree murder in the death of trayvon martin appeared in his first linked the television interview. george zimmerman gave his account of what happened that night and spoke to the martin family. >> he started bashing my head into the concrete sidewalk. as soon as he broke my nose, i started yelling for help. i was disoriented at that point. i realized that it was not my gun, it was not his gun, it was begun. -- it was the gun.

>> his name is david levin, a perfectly good name, except that the shares it with someone who is wanted by federal authorities. that coincidence turned his life upside-down. has he been able to clear his name? lisa robinson spoke with him for an update. >> there has been some resolution. they figured out i am not that person, sort of. >> david levin knows what is like to be a wanted man. he is wanted, but by no fault of his own. it first discovered this when he was pulled over for routine traffic stop and then detained by police, who told him there was an outstanding federal warrant for him. >> i said what is it for, and they said counterfeiting and forgery. i said i have no idea what you are talking about. >> the local police did not have

enough information to hold him and told him to contact the secret service. all he got from them was confirmation that there was a warrant out for it david 11. that same week he got his passport in the mail and he thought everything was fine. he drove his family to canada. coming back into the u.s., the scare of his life at the border. >> i see officers running out and pulling their weapons. i said something is going down. >> i said yes, they are coming after me. >> while immigration checked him out, they were detained at the border for 2.5 hours. that planned a trip to the bahamas last year to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. again, they were detained. he contacted us and we contacted

the secret service. they confirmed there is an active federal warrant for david levin. but was starling is that he is most likely being confused with a russian national whom is alleged to have conspired with other international associates to produce and sell counterfeit $100 bills. he went to his elected leaders to help him clear his name. >> congressman sarbanes office or the only people who were willing to help me. i reached out to the other senators and they said since congressman sarbanes was working on it already, they did not want to get involved. >> congressman sarbanes office contacted the u.s. secret service and got their attention. >> when your name appears before them as they wanted person, they will update the text record that you were the good david 11 and not the person you are looking

we will keep a little humidity around and a chance for showers and thunderstorms, but the temperatures are not nearly as warm as they have been, which is good news. things are pretty quiet, there's nothing showing up from baltimore on the radar. thunderstorms in the mountains, and out around west virginia. maybe a thunderstorm will pop up before you wake up tomorrow but most of you will not see any precipitation until tomorrow afternoon. 78 at the airport. the temperatures will hold steady now into the morning hours because the dewpoints are still in the 70's. 71 at the airport. partly cloudy skies tonight with the possibility about thunderstorm or shower. most areas will stay dry.
