>> live, local, late breaking -- this is wbal-tv 11 news at noon. >> good afternoon, everyone. i am sarah caldwell. our big story, the u.s. supreme court blocks a ruling by maryland's highest court. the decision will have a huge impact on the way police officers conduct investigations. jennifer has details on the ongoing court battle over the dna testing. >> for now, law enforcement are considering this a victory. >> in april, the maryland court of appeals ruled police could no longer collect dna samples from suspects after an arrest without a warrant.

but now a supreme court chief justice has reversed that ruling, at least temporarily. a baltimore defense attorney explains it is a victory for maryland law enforcement. >> it means they're free to collect dna upon arrest. >> the change was sparked by the state's request for the supreme court to look at a case where a man was convicted on a 2003 rate based on dna evidence taken after his arrest in 2010. the court of appeals root -- ruled that his fourth amendment rights had been violated. >> it wasn't a we had a chance to take a look at this, we're going to put the brakes on the maryland court of appeals decision. >> the order allowing dna collection to resume will remain in effect at least until king of response to the state's petition to the supreme court. as he explains, the case still has a long way to go. >> we start collecting dna again tomorrow. the case is overturned -- that

is to say if the supreme court decides not to continue with the state, cannot be used. if they agree with maryland's in court of appeals, it can be used, simple as that. they can collect it, but they are still going to have to really wait to see with the ultimate decision is before it is going to be of any value to them. >> king has until july 25 to respond to the state's petition, so we will have to wait until then to find out what happened. wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. police in anne arundel county make a prostitution arrest after a successful undercover sting operation. officers arrested a 19-year-old oakland, california at a hotel. she is charged with prostitution and possession of marijuana. they conducted the sting operation of several who tells in the area after receiving complaints of prostitution from residents.

from heat-related deaths to widespread power outages, the extreme weather has taken its toll on such a maryland. it is now planned for two house fires in anne arundel county. the first one happened around 6:00 wednesday night at this house in arnold. the couple that lives there says lightning hit near the electric breaker for the house. then they lost power and smelled smoke. edward thomas says he and his wife got out safely, but their house was destroyed by water damage. >> the clothes i have is what is on my back. i cannot get in the house it is if we can salvage anything. but, again, we are alive. >> not long after the fire, crews responded to another fire in annapolis. lightning may have traveled through a metal conductor in the home and sparked a fire in the basement. the heat and humidity have not slowed down efforts to repair the broken water main break downtown. crews continue working to repair the 20-inch water main break. workers also replaced in nearby 10-ins line after an assessment

>> in today's medical alert, a possible breakthrough in detecting alzheimer's disease center. a new study looked at nearly 100 women over age 70 who did not have dementia. researchers monitored the women for several years and on those with the highest levels of a certain type of fat for 10 times more likely to develop alzheimer's. more studies are needed, but researchers hope this can eventually lead to preventing the disease. a new study shows adhd director not affect the developing brains of young children. researchers at wake forest university looked at 16 young primates that or the age equivalent of six to 10-year-old humans. half were given a standard dose of medication for more than a year, four years for children,

some clouds in the next few hours as this system moves east. it is lined up along a front. these clouds in pennsylvania are on the dry side of the front, so to speak. but this is the delineation line with this front is sitting. this will be a trigger. it could be a trigger for thunderstorm activity to develop, along with this system moving in. so we have several things that will help to generate a thunderstorm activity or at least provide the potential for it. we will be watching. the hottest weather is in the plains states. easily into the 100's this afternoon. still an hour away from lunch hour. fairly cloudy today. thunderstorms quite likely. 90 to 95, the high. about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday but still very humid. not a very comfortable in an. insta-weather futurecast. here is the storm complex in ohio. we get some rain first before the cops comes in, according to

shoppers find the average person with school-age children will spend $688. up about $85 from last year, for a total of more than $30 billion in retail sales. >> when you think about how much people are spending, a lot of them have tried to make do with what they had over the last couple of years. and they want to make sure that their kids have everything they need to go back to school. >> the bulk of back-to-school money will be spend on clothing. followed by electronics. then shoes. and about $95 on supplies. retailers hope the robust back- to-school season can snap a three-month streak of declines in sales as consumers remain cautious. half of those surveyed said they will be looking for discounts. retailers say they will find plenty in-store and online. still, back-to-school and back to campus shoppers are expected to spend a combined $83.8 billion this year.

ones are that you're fed is getting. but there are a lot of diseases out there and parasites. it is a valid concern. you need to make sure your animals are up-to-date on all the vaccines. you can generally go online and use the internet as a library for the appropriate vaccinations. with free rodents, there is a disease that is serious, so make sure you get vaccinated against it because it is not a core vaccine. >> ok, last question from jessica. mosquitos love my dog. they're all over her wherever we go. are there any protectants i can use like doggy bug spray? is there such a thing? >> yeah, sort of. the vector -- mosquito is a vector for heartworm disease. we want to prevent that. make sure your animal is on a hard word preventative -- heartworm preventative. there are a lot of them.
