>> the first family of baltimore baseball is coping tonight with a bizarre and frightening crime. aberdeen police a 74-year-old violet ripken was abducted at gunpoint and driven through central maryland in her own vehicle. she is back safely home tonight and the search is on for the kidnapper. never winner has reaction from the orioles family. we began with sheldon dutes and a live update on the investigation. >> the search continues tonight for that suspect who is still on the run. police say the gunman is believed to still be armed and dangerous. cal ripken jr.'s 74-year-old mother has been safely reunited with her family after she was abducted from her aberdeen home at gunpoint. little is known about the suspect, including his motive. >> we are looking at the investigation, looking at every witness, every clue. for us to speculate on a motive

would be unfair. >> there are still a lot of questions around the case, but here is what we know so far. police said gunmen showed up at violet ripken's home between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and then forced to enter -- forced her into our own car. a neighbor says he has spoken to her about her ordeal. he accosted her in the garage, tied her up and put a mask on her and daughter in the backseat of the car and drove off. >> it was not until sometime tuesday evening that her car was spotted in baltimore county. that is when she was officially reported missing. not long after that, something called eric schneider's attention. >> i saw all something like

being laid out side of a car. she informed me she was left there and that her feet were bound. >> she was located this morning and harm, in her vehicle, in close proximity to verbeek -- in close proximity to her residence. >> mrs. lincoln's neighbors are still trying to make sense of what happened. ripken's neighbors are ca trying to make sense of what happened. >> the family has released the following statement. as you now know, of our mother was abducted from one. -- at gunpoint from her home yesterday afternoon. we are grateful and relieved that she is back with us safe and healthy. we want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially although law enforcement agencies that work so hard and quickly.

injuries. a startling discovery by a hiker in carroll park in baltimore. investigators say that hiker found a human skull a short time after entering the park yesterday afternoon. we are told that no other remains were found at that location and has since taken in for forensic testing. house speaker michael bush says he expects governor o'malley to call a special session early next month to expand gambling in maryland. it followed a late afternoon meeting today with his leadership team. members of the house and senate are being asked if they can be available august 8. david collins has that story from annapolis. >> falling a private meeting with his leadership team, house speaker michael bush declared governor martin o'malley is likely to call a special session early next month to expand gambling in maryland. >> i believe the governor has made that determination to go forward. >> under consideration, a casino for prince george's county.

national harbor has emerged as a preferred site, but the competitive bidding process will be open to other locations. the proposal provide some tax relief to facilities impacted by the additional competition. the option of creating a special gaming commission did not hold up. >> the vast majority of people feel more comfortable with the legislature making the decision on tax rates rather than a commission. >> know what has confirmed the 71 votes needed for passage in the house are there. >> i think it is an irresponsible thing to do to call a special session if you do not know the votes are there. >> delegations may submit separate wish list bills. baltimore city wants to raise its debt limit to borrow more school construction money. >> the governor was put on notice this week. they vow to fight against any gaming plan.

david collins, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a sinkhole and east baltimore st. forces dozens of businesses out of their buildings and it could take weeks to fix. have been around 1:30 this afternoon -- happened around 1:30 this afternoon. it backed up traffic for miles. kai reed is live in east baltimore with the latest. >> that sinkhole shutdown east monument street between patterson park and milton avenue. according to city officials, this will not be a quick fix. witnesses to call 911 said the road in the 2300 block of east monument street was caving in and they smelled gas. >> you could smell the gas really strong. now it has died off a little bit. >> the sinkhole was 10 feet in diameter and caused by old infrastructure, according to

officials who said that a brick tunnel or colewort collapsed underneath the street. it was built in 1930. >> with all the bad storms we have had lately, you have had a lot of activity in that kohlberg right there. -- in that culvert. with traffic over the top of that, it week ended . >> at least 40 businesses were forced to evacuate while crews worked to identify and repair a gas line damaged by the sinkhole. >> now people can come down this way. >> it certainly hurts, but it is something you have to deal with. tomorrow is another day and hopefully the sidewalks will open up and it will be easier. >> parts of east monument street
