this is 11:00 news. >> with a dash of royalty and a punch of rock music, britain opened the 2012 olympics. more coverage in just a minute. first, late-breaking developments in the maryland shooting plot. a man threatened to shoot up his former workplace. this is particularly unsettling, especily coming off the massacre inside the colorado movie theater. >> he was arrested after a two- day investigation. police say he called his work supervisor and threatened to go on a shooting spree. dozens of firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition all taken from neil press got's home in crofton. >> if you call anybody and threatened to do harm, kill people, we are going to believe you. and we did.

>> the investigation started with a phone call that press got made to his supervisor. -- prescott made it to his supervisor. >> he said he was a joker and he was going to blow everyone up. >> he repeated the threats several top -- separate times. >> he knew he -- he knew was not a good idea to be saying these things, but he was saying them anyway. >> police say he was wearing a t-shirt that said, "guns do not kill people, i do." >> it is important for the community to know that we take all threats seriously. if you're going to make a threat, we will take action. >> he was arrested without incident and transported to a hospital for mental health treatment.

investigators uncovered a large and diverse collection of weapons. >> several thousand rounds of ammunition. the firearms were semi-automatic rifles, semi-automatic pistols. >> he had been working as a subcontractor for the company. he is still undergoing medical treatment tonight. investigators expect to file charges in the coming days. >> as we mentioned, this terrorist threat comes on the heels of the colorado movie theater shooting. the former grad student accused of the massacre was being treated by a psychiatrist at the university where he studied. james holmes was behind the attack that killed 12 people and wounded many more. he is scheduled to be formally charged this monday. it is expected that murder will be among the charges he will be facing. the maryland attorney general is asking the federal appeals court to block a judge's ruling that

the gun permit what is unconstitutional. -- law is unconstitutional. earlier this week, a judge lifted a stay, making it easier for maryland residents to acquire a handgun. we asked a prominent maryland attorney why the next step in the legal process is so important. >> unless the fourth circuit issues a stake, his ruling holding the permit law unconstitutional will go into effect immediately and anyone who wants to will be able to carry a handgun in public regardless of whether they have a permit or not. >> right now, in addition to demonstrating a reason why you should carry a gun, you need to submit a criminal background check and demonstrate stable mental history to the police.

now the latest in the abduction case. authorities say despite numerous calls to the tip line, the suspect remains on the run. investigators are looking for this man, who believe they took the mother of cal ripken jr. from her home at gunpoint. they drove her around for abandoning her car in her own backyard. anyone with information is asked to call the police. the baltimore city police officer is recovering after an accident. this was the view around 11:00 friday morning. the multi-vehicle crash. minor injuries but no word on what caused the collision. a maryland state trooper was flown to shock trauma after his car was forced off the road and hit a fire hydrant. it happened late thursday in

mount berry. -- mount airy. he was responding to a call when a vehicle steered into his lane. he is being treated for a possible head injury. east money mystery just got a little more complicated. a six-inch water main broke inside the sinkhole. the department of public works says that 50 units will be without water until sunday. officials are working to get the area back up and running as soon as possible, but until then, the roadway will remain closed. bge officials have asked state legislators for a rate increase. the hike is needed to make improvements that would comply with the reliability and public safety requirements. on average, rake-payers will receive a $12 increase in their gas and electric bill. if it is approved, rates are expected to go up sometimes --

>> a routine call for a baltimore city paramedic turned out to be anything but routine when a porch collapsed and sent the paramedic and the victim tumbling. they reportedly fell inside the home. as the paramedic was removing the victim, the porch gave way and both fell 6 feet, ending up in the basement. >> i am looking at him coming down and they are gone. i just started yelling. i get up on the steps and i can see them down on the floor. i see that he is ok so i am relieved. it is still scary and shocking. it is crazy. >> the paramedic and the victim were not hurt but they are expected to be ok. the man was living in a home that has since been condemned.

discussing legislation on expanding gambling. the government made the announcement official. the senate is on board. the house speaker says there are enough votes in his chamber for passage. the session may be completed in three days. >> it will not only allow us to move forward with the creation of additional, needed jobs in our state, it will also allow us to realize approximately $100 million in additional revenues for maryland's #1-ranked public schools. >> the legislation would allow a casino to operate in prince george's county. along with live table games at all maryland casinos. there are hoping the city of baltimore and other counties will see some relief as a

result. college has now become an option for some high school graduates with intellectual disabilities. at least eight students to function with mental limitations will attend the university of maryland baltimore county. there will be part of a pilot program called success. there will get to demonstrate their independence, and problem- solving skills. we are told that 6 to 8 students will take place in the first year with current students. they will then be paid in the final two years of the program. some exciting news for theatre fans. the hit broadway musical "book of mormon" is coming to baltimore. as of now, no specific dates

overnight and into the morning, some of the suburbs might reach the upper 60s. most areas will stay and the '70s. this front to the north of loss is triggering showers in pennsylvania and back into ohio. it should slowly make its way south of baltimore. eventually, you get on the north side and the temperatures come down a little bit. with the front moving through, the risk will still be there tomorrow afternoon. probably into the middle afternoon and lingering into the evening hours. it does look like some slightly drier, more stable air on sunday. sunday will be the better day of the weekend. temperatures may cool off a couple of degrees for the end of the weekend. tomorrow, another muggy day with some thunderstorms.
