getting busy. coming up, the golden girl with the golden smile. >> who are we talking about? the golden gabby. gabby douglas last night winning gold in the individual all-around. that will go nicely with her team gold medal she got with her teammates earlier in the week. she now joins the other three women who have managed that feat. we'll talk to gabby in a few moments. >> then ryan lochte will be going home with a lot of hardware. we got to see it last night. >> we did. >> very, very cool. he is already looking ahead to rio. today's his birthday. we'll talk with him in just a little bit. >> first time as an olympic sport women's boxing gets under way, our five-time national champ queen underwood is going for gold. she also had a chance to catch up with jenna bush hagar and jenna will be here with that interview. >> all right. before we get to that we'll go over to natalie morales for a check on the day's top stories. >> good morning, everyone. well, team usa had the midas touch on thursday capturing

eight medals and making history. gabby douglas, the power house known as the flying squirrel, now known as olympic gold medalist in the all-around. >> it feels amazing. my coaches, a lot of hard work and effort put into the gym. i'm speechless right now. >> the 16-year-old is the first african-american woman to win the individual title with explosive performances in all four events. teammate aly raisman tied for third with aliya mustafina of russia, but under olympic tiebreaker rules, it was the russian who took home the bronze medal. another duel in the pool for u.s. champions michael phelps and ryan lochte. this time phelps the gold. >> and michael phelps is going

they showed their coach how to celebrate. in judo kala harrison takes a place in olympic history with america's first ever gold medal. >> what to watch for today. phelps' final individual olympic swim. and again, track and field begins including medals in the men's shot putt and the women's 10,000 meter race. now to the rest of today's top headlines. the u.s. jobless rate increased in july despite an uptick in hiring. the labor department says this morning employers added 163,000 jobs last month. that was the most since february. however, the july unemployment rate rose 0.1 from last month to 8.3%. new information this morning suggests there may have been warning signs that colorado shooting suspect james holmes was dangerous. unconfirmed reports now show that holmes' psychiatrist at his university alerted the school's behavioral threat team. no action was taken by the threat team at the time and

holmes then withdrew from the university of colorado before the july 20th shooting. federal aviation officials are disputing reports that three us airways commuter jets nearly collided in the skies near washington, d.c. on tuesday. faa administrator michael ware said thursday that two outbound planes and one incoming flight were not on a collision course. however, the faa said it is investigating the incident. same sex marriage supporters plan a kiss-in at chick-fil-a restaurants around the country today to protest the fast food chain owner's comments against gay marriage. this after wednesday's demonstration to support chick-fil-a's stance on same sex marriage set a one-day sales record for the company. the widow of an atlanta businessman gunned down outside their son's daycare is now being charged in his murder. >> reporter: andrea sneiderman in handcuffs, a widow now accused of malice murder in the

2010 daycare shooting death of her husband rusty. >> i didn't know what happened to rusty until i got to the emergency room. >> reporter: the indictment comes five months after she took the stand in the trial of henny newman convicted of gunning down rusty sneiderman after he dropped off his son at the daycare. henny newman was andrea sneiderm sneiderman's boss at general electric. prosecutors accused the two of having an illicit affair and conspiring to kill rusty so the two could be together and cash in on a $2 million life insurance policy. sneiderman's attorney issued a statement saying in part we categorically deny each and every one of the charges that were filed against andrea. we are looking forward to a vigorous and complete defense to ensure that andrea is fully exonerated of these false accusations. next time sneiderman appears in court will be for her arraignment. for today, nbc news, atlanta. michael jackson's mother katherine regained partial custody of michael's three

even hotter than the mid 90's. that's your latest weather. savannah? >> all right. al. thanks. 16-year-old gabby douglas is the new olympic all-around champion in gymnastics and we had a chance to talk with her earlier this morning. i asked gabby if she stopped smiling since she won gold. >> thank you. no, i haven't stopped smiling. i could barely sleep last night. >> i bet you couldn't. you know, two gold medals in one week. can you even describe what it was like to be standing on that podium and hearing our national anthem? >> hearing the national anthem and, you know, the flag raised up is definitely such an honor. you feel so proud to represent usa and yourself and your coaches and you just want to go out and perform and do the best

that you can and standing on the podium is an amazing feeling. >> you are the first african-american woman to get this individual all-around gold. i know that's something that is really meaningful to you. >> it's so meaningful to be the first african-american to win the all-around gold medal in the individual and making the history books is definitely one of the perks and it just feels amazing. >> i heard that president obama called you and your teammates a couple days all after you won team gold. what did he say to you? >> he was telling us that he was so proud of us and keep up the good work and we should come visit him at the white house sometime. >> that could probably be arranged. >> yeah. >> let's talk about last night. we were all nervous watching. you didn't seem nervous at all. how did you feel inside? >> i felt very, very good. and i just want to go out there and perform as best as i could and show everyone what i was capable of doing. and i remember coach telling me to stay calm, remain focused.

the results will come out by themselves. >> that is something that early in your career i know you've talked about focus was kind of hard in the beginning. >> focus was definitely hard. >> you have to drain yourself mentally to look away when you need to and you don't want to waste your energy just looking at the scoreboard. okay. what is she doing? just focus on yourself and what you're doing at that time. >> were you aware of the score as you were going along and what you needed to do? >> i was definitely aware. chao told me not to keep track but once in a while just peek up and see what i was staying in the first place and at the top of the leaderboard. it was definitely an amazing feeling to know that i was at the top the whole time. >> after the floor routine you kind of bounced off the floor. you knew you had nailed it. then there are the excruciating moments when you have to wait for the score. was it in doubt in your mind? were you thinking anything can happen, i may not win gold right now? >> that was going through my

mind. after the floor routine i was, okay, do i have the gold, the silver? what do i have? it was a crucial moment. my heart was just pounding. it was definitely nerve-racking. i was like, okay. do i have it? do i not? when the score popped up and i was still first, definitely one of the moments that i have to cherish. >> talk about moments to cherish. i mean, this is something that you have worked so hard for and sacrificed for. you moved away from home, from your family at age 14. a lot of people see this moment of glory but they don't know about all those days you poured into it. what would you want people to know about what it took to get to this place? >> i want people to know it took a lot. it took a lot of hard days in the gym and determination and passion and drive. gold medals are made out of your sweat, blood, and tears and effort in the gym every day. sacrificing a lot that you have to do and i moved away to get better coaching from coach chao. and sacrifice was not in vain.

women's boxing is making its olympic debut here in london and one woman in particular is taking over the ring. today correspondent jenna bush hagar paid her a visit. >> that's right. move over, elizabeth. there is a new queen in town. and this queen has been fighting for her entire life. known simply as queen, 28-year-old quinita underwood is a fighter, survivor, and ground breaker and a five-time national champion currently ranked fourth in the world in the female boxing lightweight division.

she's tough but also has a great sense of humor. >> this is my baby. >> reporter: what's his name? >> his name is king. king underwood. >> reporter: all smiles now, queen's path to these games has been challenging. though experts say she is a medal favorite, back in may she failed to qualify at olympic trials held in china. tell me about what happened in china. >> the day of my third fight i just felt, you know, a little off. just got in the ring and started off way too slow. honestly i thought i let down everybody that supported me and i didn't want it to end right there. >> reporter: a last-minute call from the international boxing federation changed her destiny. after an olympic spot went unfilled the federation was able to award another berth and they chose queen. that must have been the best call of your life. tell me about that day. >> i heard, welcome to the team. congratulations. and i just lost it. >> reporter: queen's real fight

started far from the boxing ring many years ago. at the age of 10 she was witness to unspeakable abuse. her father was sexually abusing her 12-year-old sister hosanna and eventually the abuse turned toward her. >> when i was a kid i wanted to be something else far beyond what i was going through. >> reporter: reeling from the pain in her childhood, the lost teenager found an outlet. when you were 19, a friend told you about a boxing gym. >> i geared up in the sharpest athletic gear i had and i went in there and i was like, i want to be a champ. when do i start? >> reporter: and that day changed your life. >> it changed everything for me. i never left. what gave me a home away from home, it gave me people that supported me. >> reporter: bonded by their past, it's her sister whose support has meant the most. you also had to watch your older sister go through a lot of

abuse. and do you think in some ways that created the fighter in you? >> oh, definitely. i felt helpless like i couldn't do anything at the time. she is protective of me. i'm protective of her, even now. still, to this day, we have this strong bond. you've seen her in the audience in the stands. she is the loudest one. i am so proud of her sticking through, beating adversity, and i believe that she is setting a positive example. she's been a positive role model. >> reporter: earlier this year, in an effort to help others, queen first spoke of the secret that she and her sister harbored for almost two decades. >> i didn't want to be that person that's looked at and mocked and made fun of. but i didn't get any of that. i've gotten a lot of positives and i feel that i can actually, you know, be somebody that can help people later on down the road. >> you could be angry, though. i haven't met an angry person here today at all. i mean you're resilient for sure. >> yeah. >> reporter: why have you been

goal like that, you become an olympic champion, you become the best in the world, you reflect and you look back and i sort of -- my life flashed before my eyes a little bit. i remembered everything that not only i sacrificed but my family, my friends, my teammates, you know? my coaches. everyone who's been a part of this journey. i'm just so grateful for them and for this opportunity. >> it takes a lot to be an olympian. also, though, you not only get the gold but you had to face off your last match against a british competitor. >> yes. >> the whole country was rooting for her and there you are, the british prime minister was there as well. tell me about your confidence during the match. >> honestly, you know, i would not have expected her to be in the finals. the crowd that day was amazing. she fought her heart out. she fought like a lion. she was a fierce competitor. she beat the current world champion. she had a great day. and i knew -- i knew that morning when i woke up that it was my day and that if anyone was going to beat me they'd have

to take it from me. so i went out there with one job and that was to win. >> after the match you ran into the arms of your coach who as i understand it you idolized growing up. >> yes. yeah. i mean, i remember when i was 9 years old jimmy signed my gee. when i was 16 i moved to train with him and i couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe it. i'm training with jimmy pedro. and now, you know, i've helped his legacy live on. he came so close in '04 and in '96 with two bronze medals and to be part of the pedro legacy is to be able to finish the job and it's great for me. >> you brought a lot of great attention to the sport especially for women as well. thank you for that. we are so proud of you. >> thank you. >> good job. >> mr. roker with a check of the weather. >> well, luckily, our set is

event, a former college swimmer. one thing he kept talking about and i realized also, you were almost always the biggest guy in the pool in terms of muscle. and you and i talked about this a couple months before the games. you really bulked up going to these games. do you think that was exactly the right move or is it possible you bulked up too much? >> i don't think i bulked up too much. i think it was perfect. just because i've gotten a lot faster since '08 and a lot bigger. and it's just all the training, actually the training i've been doing. i know it helped me out a lot so i'm just going to stay hopefully the same. >> keep up that kind of training regimen? >> oh, yeah. >> you said to me a couple months ago, i said to you, write the headline, ryan, for what the papers will say when these games are over. you said, i hope it says ryan lochte takes over. what's the headline? >> that's hard to say. just because, i mean, i had some ups and down swims at this

olympics. so i don't know. it's hard to say. i'm just going to have to wait and see what the actual media says. >> and when you look at rio four years from now you just said to me before we went on, this has been a really long four years. can you gear up mentally and physically and think about putting four more years in to get to the games in rio? >> you know, it has been a long four years, but i'm having a blast. i love just getting up on the blocks and racing the top people in the world. and i get excited for that. and by all means i'm going another four years. >> no question. >> there is no question about it. i'm going another four. >> two things finally. we had your family on here the other day. i just want you to talk a little bit about what they've meant through this process, these long years. >> you know what? they're my biggest fans and supporters. they've been through everything with me. and they've been there every big national meet that i've -- or international meet that i've ever swam. so having them supporting me, i think there's like 40 plus

our viewers, faster, higher, stronger is the official motto of the olympics. for two special athletes you can add three more words -- determination, courage, and luck. no one is calling them the dream team but for these runners from somalia just making it to the london olympics is a dream come true. >> it's very enjoyable for us. >> reporter: you're enjoying it. >> yes. >> reporter: in their hometown of mogadishu they dodge bullets, bombs, and cross fire to train for olympic glory. the ruins of the stadium where they run laps was until recently a staging area for islamic extremists. >> we are very proud to get here and show people where we've come from. >> reporter: mohamed husband an will be competing in the 1500 meter and his teammate runs the 400. they call getting here unbelievable. the somalia olympic committee budget is just $2,000 a month.
