night after midnight. the suspect broke into his ex- girlfriend house. he assaulted her and took off with her child. she was able to escape and call police. baltimore city fountain last night at the residence in columbia. >> the officers arrived here, baltimore city and howard county police. they were confronted by the suspect in the back of the house, outside, and asked him to show his hands. they knew he had had a weapon overnight and had just assaulted this woman. ultimately the suspect was shot in a confrontation. >> that suspect was shot and killed. no word on his identity. police were able to locate the child. reporting live, jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. 95 northbound is opened after police shut down all lanes in harford county because of a

fatal accident. the accident happened just before 9:00 p.m. at aberdeen. police are trying to determine what caused the accident. >> it was a preseason game but the ravens have a solid first show went on the field against the falcons. the ravens were down 10 at halftime. curtis painter led the reserves to 24 points in the second half, throwing for three touchdowns. keith mills will have more later in sports. >> usain bolt out sprinted his competition in the 100-meter dash lawyer this week. >> brian hickey has that race and a look at the rest of our olympic highlights.

>> welcome back to 11 news today. 6:10. 81 degrees downtown. still i humid start to the day. rain advancing from the west. i am finishing my olympic adventures. i've been going through all the different sports. we'll recap them for you in case you missed the highlights. my olympic adventures have come to an end. what an exciting two weeks it has been. >> i'm not going to mess with the meterology department anymore. >> the journey began with a splash with synchronized swimming. my next adventure took me to the trampoline, where i felt like a kid again. i got a great workout. then i was back in the pool trying my best to keep up with the aggressive sport of water polo. [whistle]

[panting] my toughness was put to the test again in taekwondo, where i managed to break a board with my bare hand. what kind of wood is this? by the start of week two, i'd face my biggest hurdle yet. i narrowly escaped track and field without injury. >> oh! >> the following day, i was at the mercy at the wind, -- of the wind, navigating a sailboat in the harbor. next came fencing. it is ok and encouraged to hit people with swords. in my final adventure, i was a threat to no one. i struggled to hit the birdie on the badminton court. eight olympic adventures full of laughs, a few falls, and experiences to last a lifetime. >> that must have been a lot of

more rain is on the rain. look at the rain pushing through virginia. you can see a counterclockwise circulation. that is an enhanced area of rain. that front back in ohio and kentucky is the front moving in. threat for severe weather bank this afternoon. >> this is a complicated situation as to whether we will get any severe weather. we have one system. the main part is coming through ohio right now. what happens in between them will determine whether we get any severe weather. if it stays cloudy after the middle of the day, will not see any severe weather. if the sun comes out and cooks the atmosphere, there's a chance for some severe weather.

showers and thunderstorms likely this boarding. some could be heavy. more showers later today. a high of 86 or 87. we have some better news in the seven-day forecast. ava will take a look at the radar in just a few minutes. >> howard county police shoot and kill a man while assisting baltimore city police on a search. >> the suspect broke into his ex-girlfriend's home after midnight and said she woke up with a gun to our head. jennifer franciotti has the details. >> he awoke her while she was sleeping by putting a gun to her head and telling her that she was going to die. he kept her there all night. he assaulted her repeatedly. she was able to escape and call 911. baltimore city police responded. >> the suspect had taken off with the coupl'e 2-year-old child.

police were led to a residence in columbia. police executed a search warrant. >> the officers arrived here, baltimore city and howard county police. they were confronted by the suspect in the back of the house, outside, and asked him to show his hands. they knew he had had a weapon overnight and had just assaulted this woman. ultimately the suspect was shot in a confrontation. >> police have not released details of the shooting. there is no word if the suspect pointed a weapon at the officers. the shooting is still under investigation. he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. neighbors were surprised by the whole event. >> i mean, to have a shooting in a neighborhood is not something you expect to happen. not here in columbia, not here in howard county. maybe some other places, but not here. >> police have learned that the child was not at the columbia location at the time of the shooting. the child has been located, safe, with family members.

the shooting is under investigation. remains were found in the woods in pasadena. somebody found remains of a white female along the 8100 block of ritchie highway. the victim suffered trauma to the upper body. police have no idea who she is. anyone with information should call police. >> 11 news has obtained depositions in a harassment case against john leopold. the employee filed the lawsuit, accusing him of retaliatory termination. one of the officers said he was with leopold's said he continuously talk about the size of her breast. was hired back in 2008. alleges leopold made unwanted

sexual advances toward her and had transferred to the police department and fired after she filed an official complaint. he discussed her complaint and told him to call james tear and that she was coming to the police department and that she was taking a position that she would have to be interviewed for. when it was time to interview for the job, she was to be told she would not be getting the job. a spokesman said the office has no comment. leopold has denied any wrongdoing. >> now insta-weather plus and traffic pulse 11 together. >> good morning. sarah caldwell checking on your morning commute. we are tracking some problems and many are related to the rain. we have some delays at route 26. all lanes are shut down in both directions because of an

>> have a good one. >> this is a wbal-tv 11 editorial from president and general manager dan joerres. >> in the most hotly contested bidding process in the history of the international olympic committee, the washington- baltimore region lost its bid for the 2012 olympics. however, the dream is still alive, especially for dan knise, who is ceo of the 2012 coalition, and appears to be up for the task again. knise is now setting his sights on the 2024 games, and testing the waters to see if civic and financial support is as

optimistic as he is. with the belief that the region still has what made it attractive in the previous bid, including the largest sports infrastructure in a 40-mile radius, some supporters believe a bid is possible. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake sees the olympic games as a phenomenal opportunity to showcase the region. the dollar signs are big on both sides. a 2000 study projected it would cost $2 billion to build and run, but would return more than $5 billion and create about 70,000 jobs between concept and the games. the united states olympic committee has indicated they are willing to bid again, despite losing to london this year. the 2016 games are scheduled for brazil, and the finalists are already decided for the 2020 games. the ioc will choose the host city for the 2024 games in 2017. the bid process is a marathon that starts with a five-year proposal period, and concludes with a seven-year building and preparation time for the host city. the decision to bid will be made locally over the next year. the exposure the olympics would bring to baltimore and washington would be a win-win
