we have had a little bit of cloud cover, dramatically helping things out. we may have a thunderstorm over night and maybe even in the early parts of tomorrow. we will get back to end up in the forecast for the weekend in a couple of minutes. >> state highway officials spent the afternoon diverting traffic from highways 70 after one vehicle burst into flames. investigators tell us the fire broke out in the truck's brakes. amazingly, the driver was able to separate the truck from the trailer where the explosives were. it is pretty much completely burned out now. the eastbound lanes remain close. the west down lanes are open. >> about last night's deadly shooting in howard county, police and fire on a man after learning that he had held a woman at gunpoint after

kidnapping their child. the texas -- detectives tell us that there were led to a home. according to charging documents, he had been turning to shoot police and himself, claiming that he had a gun. a 12-year veteran of the force opened fire. that is under investigation. but no gun was found at the crime scene. last night, after the olympics, we found the sworn deposition of the 3 anne arundel police officers that said that john leopold ordered the firing of a county employee that complained about his behavior. those statements are part of new allegations coming out about leopold. >> they took an oath to serve and protect. now three officers are going to tell the truth.

in the deposition, they talk about a vindictive john leopold did whatever he wanted. and other county officials were involved. >> troubling, deeply troubling. >> new serious allegations made against john leopold by three officers of. >> i have never heard of a county executive intentionally reading and employees bringing board to make sure it produced results against someone he no longer held in high regard. that is outrageous. >> but the allegations have to be examined carefully. >> i know they didn't as any personal favor to me. i know they did it because it was the right thing to do. >> de have a nickname for leopold, crazy uncle jack.

the county executive seemed to like carla and hired her as his public information officer. "one thing he really liked about her was the size of her breasts. he spoke about the that." after she complained about harassment, leopold wanted her transfer to the police department and then let go. one officer spoke with chief tear after a conversation with leopold. the officers also indicate jonathan hodgkin and the county human resources director knew what was going on. >> everyone knew. every gun -- everyone was talking about me. i knew from the day that i got there that i would not be hired for this position. and that is really humiliating. >> the councilman or is that the

county may face a huge payout. if anything, the burden should be leopold. >> if the county is made to pay the plaintiff in this case, i think it is reasonable to look to mr. leopold himself for financial redress that he would have to pay back the county. >> along with the civil case, leopold faces criminal charges, accusing him of misusing his security detail. leopold has denied any wrongdoing. >> police say a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with a gun he found in a parking lot just after 11:00 a.m. this morning in hagerstown investigators say he was playing with his 7-year-old sister when they found a handgun and started playing with it.

at some point, the gun discharged and struck the boy in the chest. the investigation is ongoing. >> a man is -- james farmstead was referenced in last month's mass shooting when he called the office of child support of services. he threatened to bring his ak-47 to the office and killed employees and himself. police did not find weapons, but it is not clear what connection he had with the child support office. it is less than a week after a gunman opened fire against worshippers in milwaukee. family, friends and community pay their respects to the six people gunned down while mourning their loss of those shot by wad marke -- by wade

>> state health officials have confirmed the first case of west nile virus for maryland this year. an adult in central maryland has been infected and they found it in a pool of mosquitoes in montgomery county. officials are asking you to take extra precautions with outside activity. symptoms can occur for up to two weeks following the mosquito bite. now to an amazing reunion for doctors at greater baltimore medical center. it began with a pair of twins born 54 days apart. years later, their story is still pretty inspiring. kimber williams was going into premature labor for baby number one, calais. but the second twin was not quite ready for the world. charlie wasn't born until two months later on august 10. -- august 12.

so for their 10th birthday, they got to me to the doctors who performed that miraculously. >> we have some that are born a few minutes apart, a few hours apart, maybe a day or two apart. but this was almost two months apart. to be borne so far apart and survive, the 24-week survival is not that high. >> doctors say that the fact the twins survived is extraordinary in itself. but infants born as early as 24 weeks have a mortality rate of 54%. it has been days of watching great talent competition and sportsmanship during the month it -- during the london olympics. americans are staying up late to watch the programs and many people are nine getting enough

it does not have a lot of lightning, but a potential of wind gusts up to 60 m.p.h. over the last couple of hours, the potential for some large hail associated with the core of this storm. that is about it as far as the worst weather in the mid atlantic at the time being. we will keep an eye on it. there is the warning, it just to the west of hagerstown, covering washington county. so far, we have had some shower whether overnight and early this morning. the good news is that in the rain fell in some of the driest parts of maryland. those yellow spots indicate to inches or more of rain. that thunderstorm west of hagerstown is starting to produce some measurable precipitation by radar estimates. warm and muggy is the forecast

for this afternoon. you noticed the swirl in the clouds over the great lakes, an area of low pressure. this will push through baltimore, but it is pushing through slowly. it will take the rest of tonight and tomorrow morning to move past. that keeps the tender thought -- the thunderstorm threat going for overnight and into scattered storms tonight. sunset and 8:08 p.m. tomorrow, showers chances will linger into the morning. highs again in the mid-80's. sunrise on saturday morning at 6:16 a.m. there is a small crafted by azeri -- small craft advisory in

place. western maryland stores to clear out after the showers taper off. partly cloudy skies. look at the highs. down on the eastern shore, the thunderstorm threat. but it will see mostly clearing skies for sunday. that is moving so slow. thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and maybe a shower into sunday morning before it clears up later in the day. we are keeping an eye on the tropics. we have this seventh tropical depression of the season. the current forecast takes that system south to the caribbean. it could get a little bit stronger. the next name on the list is boarded -- is gordon.

security detail. and howard county police have released the man shot and killed by a county officer. percy holland of baltimore was shot last night outside a home in columbia. he had threatened to shoot officers were trying to arrest him. he was wanted in baltimore for an assault on his girlfriend. he broke into the woman's home early thursday morning and held a gun to her head. and police tell us of that one of the victims in an early- morning double shooting has died of his injuries. two suspects remained at large pinhead happened at 4:00 a.m. this morning -- at large. it happened at 4:00 a.m. this morning. the deceased victim is a 41- year-old man. 856-year-old man remains in critical condition at the hospital. >> annmarie is about to get -- i

rain and a dangerous lightning as well. perhaps some gusting winds up to 60 m.p.h. not an immediate threat to the immediate baltimore area appeared it is sold to our north west. it looks like it is drifting off to the northeast. the warning is primarily for northern frederick county and back into northern washington county. there are no watches or warnings in effect anywhere else. at the airport, we picked up almost a third of an inch of rain. it brings the monthly total up to more than half an inch. but we're still eight and a half inches below normal precipitation for the year.

triple digit, when hundred degrees backing in 1900. there is a contrasting air masses triggering these thunderstorms. it is only in the 60's and the low-70's to the west. where these two masses are colliding, that is where we see the thunderstorms. that front will be driven right to baltimore tonight and tomorrow. it is a slow-moving front. we are likely to see showers generating ahead of it, right into tomorrow morning, perhaps into the early afternoon on the bay and even the eastern shore. we expect a good deal of sunshine in the area on sunday, probably even into monday as well. the forecast for tonight calls

for a chance of thunderstorms under mainly cloudy skies. when that 5 miles per hour to 10 m.p.h. some sun breaking through in the afternoon and sunrise is at 6:16 a.m. possibly some rough waves with the isolated thunderstorms crossing the bay. western maryland, temperatures will get a little cooler. highs only in the 60's tomorrow and low-70's on sunday. sunday looks like a beautiful day on the eastern shore. ocean city, the front is moving slow, so that believes the show or risk. a rip current risk.

the government is slashing its corn production forecast to 10.8 billion bushels. it appears the rate of new foreclosures seen maryland will be higher than any other state. the national -- there is a flood of new cases, one is dealing with robosignings. almost 20 of every 1000 home loans in maryland went into foreclosure during april, may and june this year, twice the national average. meanwhile, the government is pitching some new rules to help homeowners. it includes clear statements which breakdown mortgage payments and rulings on interest-rate hikes. and correcting errors quickly. the rules come from the consumer
