wrap things up. i'm going to miss the weather. it's been gorgeous here over the last several days. but we'll talk olympics, but first, a bigger prize up for grabs at the white house. let's begin with the breaking news from overnight with nbc news republican presidential candidate mitt romney apparently poised to pick wisconsin congressman paul ryan to be his running mate. romney will make it official at a rally at 9:00 a.m. eastern. peter alexander is joining us by telephone from norfolk. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, lester. multiple sources tell nbc news that wisconsin congressman paul ryan will be mitt romney's running mate. as you noted that official word expected to come within the next two hours here. it's a dramatic back drop as people are filing are in to this sight. the back drop is the uss wisconsin, a retired military battle ship named for paul ryan's home state. >> i'm very disappointed in the president. >> reporter: mitt romney will end months of speculation this

morning by announcing wisconsin congressman paul ryan as his running mate. ryan is considered a bold vice presidential choice. mitt romney appeared to hint at late this week during an interview with nbc's chuck todd. >> i certainly expect to have a person that has a strength of character. vision for the country. that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country. >> reporter: a 42-year-old married father of three ryan is viewed as a rising republican star. popular with conservatives. chairman of the house budget committee, ryan has become a lightning rod for debate. after introducing an aggressive budget plan that calls for deep cuts in taxes and spending including changes to medicare. ryan who over the course of the campaign has shown a strong personal chemistry with romney, this week described the importance of this year's election. >> it's not a very good political climate right now but that's because we have enormously high stakes election. >> reporter: among the other names -- ohio senator rob

portman and tim pawlenty. >> i didn't enter this thinking i would be the vice presidential candidate so i'm not disappointed. >> reporter: with barely two weeks until the republican convention, mitt romney kicks off a bus tour by formally introducing his ticket to the nation. >> and the much talked about vp app has gone live overnight the romney/ryan.com website went live as well. it is and paul ryan, he is a former trainer of fitness guru who has led the exercise regimen p-90 x routines in the congressional gym. he'll get a big workout over the next 87 days leading up to the election. >> well put. peter alexander, thanks. david gregory is moderator of

"meet the press" and chuck todd is the political director. good to have you both this morning. david, let me start you. i think it's fair to say that a lot of people are saying paul who? 38% of the u.s. has not even heard of the congressman. tell us about him and tell us why he's regarded as a bold pick. >> well, he's young. he's 42 years old. he looks look younger than that. he's part of a conservative wave in the house of representatives who put his own name to the house budget blueprint which was pretty controversial. it didn't pass, talked about cutting spending and also changing the medicare program for seniors introducing the voucher program. made it very controversial from the start. even among some fellow republicans. newt gingrich notely called it right wing conservative engin r engineering. but conservatives have rallied around paul ryan. he talked about the debt and the
7:06 am
fiscal crisis and he'll be a powerful voice for mitt romney on dealing with both the economy and the fiscal crisis that the country faces. but there are downsides as well. >> and chuck, before i turn to you, we just learned that the -- that the app that the campaign has put together has formally confirmed paul ryan as the pick as the vp. the notion that this turns the conversation toward deficit cutting, towards the budget, does it cut both ways for republicans here? does it open them up for more criticism on this side? >> well, it could. i mean, it's gonna put this issue of medicare, the future of medicare, the future of social security, the medicare in particular, that's the centerpiece of paul ryan's budget reform plan that he put out both last year and this year. democrats politically have been able to successfully use this and some congress -- in some congressional races, we are seeing it get some traction,
7:07 am
basically running against the idea of what ryan wants to do to medicare. help democrats in senate races in some red states. so this has a lot of downside as well. but mitt romney needed some definition. okay, there was this sense -- you could feel it over the last three or four weeks that the campaign was becoming too much about mitt romney, the person. he was never going to win a personality contest with president obama. that he needed to relaunch the campaign and focus it on something else. focus it on issues if you will. the pick of ryan will do that. but there is downside and there's downside because of the issue of medicare. >> david, as you know, the polls have obama leading anywhere between seven and nine points. how important right now is it for romney to ignite that part of his base that hasn't really been excited about him, they have been lukewarm. the tea party, the fiscal conservatives. does this ignite that? >> i think so.
7:08 am
they're really opposed to president obama's re-election and mitt romney has that going for him, but there's a reservoir of suspicion about him. whether he's a true conservative has dogged him and continues even now. look, this is still a campaign. it is about mitt romney versus president obama and the economy is still the chief concern. even more than the budget deficit, and the debt that the country faces. but in paul ryan is somebody who can be a strong surrogate for mitt romney. he can help raise money. he can excite the base and he can take the criticism to president obama. those are things you want in a running mate and now mitt romney has that. >> all right, david gregory and chuck todd. confirming paul ryan is now officially the pick. that came across the iphone app that just came out from the romney campaign a few minutes ago. we'll cover mitt romney's running mate announcement live from norfolk, virginia, at 9:00 eastern time right here on nbc. now here's natalie.
