areas, it was déjà vu all over again for those who lost power for about a week in the last storm, and again tuesday night. >> our trees behind our house came down and took out the power. the transformer literally blew up. a huge flash, pop, explosion. >> and within a month. what are the odds? >> residents were trying to do nothing -- to take things in stride, but were assured by barker's that their power would be restored by the end of the day -- by power crews that their power would be restored by the end of the day. >> it is aggravating. it is mother nature, so what can you do? but at least we got the power crews are here first. -- out here first. >> i was told by residents that a number of the neighborhoods have already had restored power. we are 8 inches below normal

when it comes to rain fall out at b.w.i. airport. and we get rain my guest today, it is not actually good for crops because it falls so quickly that it rolls off the soil. let's head back inside to tom tasselmyer to have a look at the forecast. it was quite a lightning show yesterday. >> lot of lightning, as you mentioned. and some heavy downpours. but the threat today is further to our east. from dorchester down to ocean city and in parts of southern maryland in st. mary's county, a severe thunderstorm watch. around here, the radar is clear. nothing in the immediate baltimore area. thunderstorms in virginia are strong, but not living in our direction. some storms moving across the southern part of the bay. that storm continues to drift away. this severe threat is down to the south on the lower eastern shore.

while we are dealing with some heavy showers and storms in the area and the potential for some flooding, more than half of the countries dealing with a rather severe drought. the nation's heartland is dealing with the worst of it. jay gray is in missouri where some of the farmers are struggling the worst and hoping for rain. >> new climate data shows last month was not only the hottest july ever, but the warmest month of all time. and that is since they started keeping records in 1895. here on missouri farmland and across the midwest, folks will tell you they did not need that data to tell you how extreme conditions have been. it is not the water the area desperately need got instead, the waves of orange and yellow, revealing crumbling earth and burn down remnants of a desperate summer. all 114 counties in missouri have been declared disaster

areas. the state is suffering through extreme drought conditions. for the first time ever, the city of oliver has restricted water use because the wells are too low. >> everybody has gone down. we are seeing it stabilize, but it has gone low enough that we have concern. >> concern is about the only thing that seems to be growing in this area where most make their living from the land. this family has been dairy farming for more than 50 years and has never seen conditions quite as bad. the pond have dried up. they have hauled as much as 8,000 gallons of water to their heard every day. farmers are being forced to pay for speed and hay and it costs more than the milk they are producing. -- pay for feed and hay and it costs more than the milk they

if you remember governor o'malley announced last week the low rate of infant mortality for the second year in row. now there is more positive development underage hospital program called the maryland patient safety center. in the last four years there has been a 67% reduction in induction. and 18% in decline in nicu admissions. wes knile is spreading faster than it had in previous summers and -- west knile virus is spreading faster than it had in previous summers. the highest number of cases are being seen since 2004. the mild spring and hot summer has been the perfect breeding ground. the drought has added to the

>> a security guard has been shot at the headquarters of the family research council. a security guard was struck in the arm, but its condition is not known. the suspect was immediately taken into custody. according to reports, the shooter enter the building displaying a gun and was confronted by security guards before he fired. it is not known if any guards fired back. the family research council is a christian conservative organization that promotes traditional marriage and lobbies against gay rights and other same-sex issues. it appears that gerry sandusky is spending his time in prison writing a book. he has already published a memoir called attached, and now there is where he is working on a second of from behind bars.

he is no longer on suicide watch and spend ayers behind bars in his cell. he will not be allowed to profit from his books behind bars. >> a woman used ingenuity to save herself from being trapped under a riding lawnmower. late last month, the riding lawnmower started malfunctioning when going uphill. when she tried to turn around, it rolled over and fell on top of her, pinning her leg between the mower and some rocks. >> the tractor was smoking and i was sure it was going to burst into flames any minute. i thought, i don't want to die like this. >> she tried to call for help, but nobody heard her. she used the handle of a bucket to release her leg from being trapped. it took her five hours. she said she has no plans to cut

today, the answer was a resounding yes. >> despite what many believed at the beginning of the year, despite what so many statistics say about the quality of the 2012 orioles, the record does the talking. they tied up the wild card spot seven weeks to go. the orioles are not going away and the fans rejoice. >> i always love seeing the orioles. seems to be toward a much quieter and nicer weather pattern overnight and during the day tomorrow. a severe thunderstorm watch for our area is even further south than the bay bridge. you've got to get down in dorchester and somerset counties. these are the areas that have the best chance for a powerful thunderstorm to pop up. even there, but activity has been scattered. thankfully, a lot cooler today that the record high, which was 103 on this 15th day of august in 1988. 49 degrees is the record low in 1964. cooler and drier air coming in from the north and west as we speak. oakland, a cool 70 degrees. that is behind the front.

it will move off the coast tonight and allow high pressure to settle in. a clearing trend as this hite gets a little closer. friday, the next five will be rolling in it with possibly another round of thunderstorms. tomorrow afternoon and evening, storms in the great lakes push through the mounds by early friday. -- the mountains by early friday. tonight, 60-68. a little bit cooler and eventually turning a little less humid. tomorrow, the northwest wind continues and with lots of sunshine and breezy air compressing of the mountains. we may hit 90 degrees in a few locations, but noticeably less humid. northwest winds on the bay, weighs about a foot. a water temperatures in the low 80's.

they have all created a cop -- a company called merchant exchange. it is an application that would beilable from most any smart phones. it would compete with google's wali payment app. the federal trade commission is cracking down on check scams and people who send things online. we are talking about using sites like e-bay and craigslist.com. potential buyers at sending sellers checks that are nearly twice the cost of the product, and then asking the victims to send them the difference. >> it will -- very likely will not be able to tell a counterfeit check when you see it. nor will eurobank be able to tell. >> it can take up to four weeks for the check to clear, but banks require -- but banks are required to make that funding
