ntsb is now at the scene. we begin with lowell melser of live at the scene. >> as you can imagine, this is an active scene, and will remain so for quite some time. to let you know where we are, this accident just happened off of main street. i am counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 coal cars on the side here. in the front, locomotives, where we saw engineers looking over those. 21 cars in all unfortunate. , there were two victims of the crash, and they have been identified as 19-year-old elizabeth nass, a student at jmu, and rose mayr, a student at the university of delaware did

invest a ghost don't know what they were doing by the tracks, and if they were -- investigators don't know what they were doing by the tracks, and if they were hit by the train. the train derailed as it came to an elected city in the main street area. 2130 cars came off the track and some of them fell 20 feet off of a bridge. one neighbor described the horrifying scene as it unfolded. >> i was sound asleep in my bedroom, which faces the railroad tracks but i heard this tremendous noise. it really frightened me. "oh, my gosh, the train has derailed." i hear the train go by four or five times a day. >> something we found interesting -- with this accident occurred, if you remember the last tropical storm we had in this area, there is a

retaining wall in main street. ironically, the train derailment is near where we saw this wall collapsed last year. there will be a news conference in the next hour to update us on what is going on here. in the meantime, we are learning more about the victims in this case. let's go back to the newsroom. jayne miller has that part of the story. >> autopsy results are not complete. according to a source familiar with the investigation, there is no indication to suggest that the two girls who died in the incident were hit by the train. instead, we are told they were buried in the coal that spelled out during the derailment. it is clear that the girls were sitting on the railroad bridge before the incident, tweeting pictures. did their presence on that

bridge contribute to the derailment if the train tried to avoid them? or was it a coincidence that they were there at the very spot at the same time something else caused the derailment, and they were caught by the crush of the spelling coal? all of these questions will be the focus of investigators, the ntsb, which routinely investigates these incidents involving transportation, trends, etc. they will be in charge of t investigation. we will throw it back to our helicopter, and skycam, and roy, what i and thought about today when i saw the breaking news on the morning show is the last time we had such a serious incident and elegance it was back in the 1980's, -- serious incident in ellicott city was back in the 1980's with that major fire. this probably more serious in terms of the damage and fatalities. >> csx will waste no time in

trying to get this accident investigation cleanup on the town back open. we're looking at the baltimore to decide. -- baltimore county side. they a shutdown frederick road. unless you live down here, he will not be able to get down here. there are numerous trucks and equipment here in the process of trying to remove the coal or some of the railway cars. if you go to the ellicott city aside, howard county police have shut it down right at the heart of downtown ellicott city paid some of the jobs is still open, but they blocked off probably about two blocks away from the crash site. you are trying to get to some businesses, but right now, it is going to be somewhat of an unusual occurrence in trying to

among the 11 casualties and the last week's crash of a military helicopter in afghanistan he was assigned to a west coast base and naval warfare unit. fuel accounts and have not been made public. -- funeral arrangements have not been made public. investigators tell at 11 news that a 23-year-old officer and his partner were chasing a suspect shortly before 1:00 monday afternoon on southbound 95 near the powder mill road exit. police say that he lost control of his car and ran off the interstate and spread into a ditch. both were taken to hospital. morris was pronounced dead. the other officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. police are still looking for the suspect and the vehicle. no word on a suspect or possible motive behind a deadly shooting last night in southwest baltimore. investigators say a 36-year-old man was shot just before 9:00 monday night on the 3200 block of walbrook ave. his identity has not been
