last year but instead of getting better, apparently it's only getting worse. something to think about as you sit down to feed your family this morning. more on that coming up. >> and as we mentioned, prince harry and those controversial photos. heap also did some swimming with u.s. sensation ryan lochte. what else he has planned. >> the arrows. >> and it's the undisputed hit of the summer, carly ray is here to perform live. let us begin on a thursday morning with tropical storm isaac. al's upstairs and he's tracking it. al, good morning. >> good morning, matt and savannah. this is a massive storm. it's not that strong yet but its diameter is about a thousand miles. that's the distance from atlanta to boston. right now 255 miles south,

southeast of san juan, puerto rico. 40 mile-an-hour wind, moving west at about 12 miles per hour. the system right now looking like the eye of the storm is just west of san juan, puerto rico. the path brings it across just south of puerto rico and friday across santa domingo, moves into cuba early sunday morning and then takes aim on to southern florida as probably a category 1 storm, hitting key west sometime early monday morning and continuing its way up the coast and may be making landfall somewhere again around tallahassee. now, we also are looking at a european model. this is all pretty much coming all together. but you can also see how this system starts to affect florida even before it makes landfall. sunday morning the rain starts to make its way into miami, key west, all the way up the coast, and then into the panhandle and continuing on into the middle of

next week on into the southeast and mid-atlantic coast. a lot of rain with this system. it could become a minimal hurricane at a category 1 but maybe even make a category 2 before it makes landfall. we continue to track it. >> al, thanks. now what's on track to become the worst year ever for the west nile virus in the united states. we go to houston, texas this morning where aerial spraying is now under way. janet, good morning. >> reporter: this is a full fledged public health emergency. because there is no vaccine by the west nile virus, people need to avoid getting bitten or we need to kill the infected mosquitoes. small planes were in the air spraying pesticides. it is an uphill battle because the west nile season is still very young. a new round of spraying to combat what is on track to be

the worst outbreak of the west nile virus ever seen across the u.s. across the country, an alarming increase in the cases of the west nile virus. officials didn't mince words. >> this is literally a matter of human life or death. >> 1,100 people have been sickened by the virus, 43 is died. that's more than double than just a week ago. more than half are in texas. >> we need to interrupt the transition system to try to save lives. >> domingo is weak, walking with a cane and he has blurry vision. he spent 11 days in the medical sen kerr with a furious case of the virus yet survived. >> i was feeling real drowsy, real weak. i started having trouble reading. i went to lay down to see if things would get better. >> reporter: in dallas and north

texas, the epicenter of the outbreak, they've launched dual assaults. planes are spraying insecticide at night and looking for pools of water. finish ewing fines for those who have tires filled with water. texas will need the help as the season doesn't end for at least another month. >> it's a late summer disease. the fact that we've got so many cases this early and it so widespread does not bode well for the future summer. >> and the cdc is warning that those numbers are very likely to rise and not just here in texas because there is some delay in getting the numbers to health officials. and also, savannah, it takes between 3 and 14 days after the bite to develop any symptoms of the west nile virus. back to you. >> dr. nancy snyderman is nbc's

issues that will bring us back to 20 years ago. >> now let's get a check at the other top stories this morning. natalie, good morning. >> three northern california counties are in a state of emergency this morning as the explosive ponderosa wildfire rages. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters have done a remarkable job keeping this fire in check. it is roughly 55% contained but it is still very much a threat as we found out on the front line. exploding across forest land, northern california's ponderosa fire blew up wednesday. even the most seasoned firefighters scrambled to safety. >> it's coming up hot and hard! >> reporter: at least 500 structures are threatened, 69 homes have already been lost, an erratic fire that today son the move.

city, maryland this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. they've got a big mess to clean up here. most of the rail cars are gone but they've still got a mountain of coal spread up and down the tracks here. it now appears that these two teen-age girls, these childhood friends, were quite simply sitting in exactly the wrong spot when this passing train derailed right on top of them. whatever caused this tragedy just after midnight tuesday morning, it came without warning. two 19-year-old friends were sitting on the bridge over main street with their backs to the tracks. they just tweeted a photo of their feet dangling from the bridge with a message "drinking on top of the ellicott city sign and looking down on old ec, a last night together before returning to college. minutes later a passing coal train derailed right where they sat, 21 of 80 cars off the track. they were killed, buried in

coal. >> can you imagine how horrible it was and how horrible it must be for, you know, their family, their parents. our hearts go out to them. >> reporter: it's now up to the ntsb to determine why the drain jumped the tracks. importantly the three-man crew insists they never applied the emergency brakes. investigators say the automatic emergency brakes were deployed as it was already derailing. >> there's a lot of forces of derailment. we have to look at the pieces of rail and examine each one of them. it's going to take some time. >> they had gone to high school together. elizabeth was studying the james madson university in virginia, rose studied nursing at the university of delaware. a youtube video captured rose innocent lif clowning around and singing an original song. ♪ referring is going to be all right ♪ >> through years the tracks have

attracted generations of young people looking to play and party. >> being on the tracks you have a nice view of the town below and the river so it just a really good sightseeing place. i'm not going to be up there anymore after that event happened. it's just dangerous. >> reporter: valerie's 17-year-old daughter recently said she and her friends climbed on that same bridge. >> i brought her here today to see how dangerous it is to walk on the train tracks and how fatal it can be. >> reporter: two local college kids home for the summer lost in a single, awful moment. investigators say it could take months to determine the cause of this accident. they're looking at the speed of the train. they're also got data from the black box reporter on board the train and the locomotive had a vid video camera on it. services for these two young women will be held this weekend. >> what a tragedy.

carrying unsafe food bound for your breakfast table. now police say it's actually getting worse. we're on patrol with the indiana state police. no radar gun. we're going to pull him over right now. >> yes. >> reporter: instead officer kelly is armed with a food thermometer. >> i'm getting an initial temperature of 53 degrees in your trailer. this summer's been particularly bad. >> reporter: indiana. if you eat it, it was likely hauled through here pu but if the units are off, food can turn foul. on our first stop, trouble. police athis truck's refrigerator isn't working properly. by law the food should be at a
