12:06 pm
emotion around the fact that it would be happening today, the first day. water you learning? >> alright. while we're hearing at this point is everything has to be confirmed by david collins. i am trying to get my bearings here. we continue to see a flow of parents getting their students. excuse me, folks. to you mind if we talk to you for a second? do you know anyone at the school? >> and our daughter. >> what do you know? what they are taking them down to the shopping center one by one. >> are you having a hard time getting in touch with your daughter? >> we are still trying to contact your. >> school standout word? >> we heard about it on the news. >> really? you heard it from us. what is it like with the parents? 12:08 pm
another has been one student shot. he was taken to shock trauma. the suspect is in custody. they are no longer worrying about the fact there might be a suspect on the loose. we have confirmed there is a suspect in custody. this happened around 10:30. we are looking at more details into this shooting. that is what i think is the big question. how did that happen? lowell? >> and you know, we have to be cautious about what students are saying. we heard from one student, and i believe him because he seemed really distraught, he was sitting in the cafeteria. he said students were "blwoing things at him," so you can take that as some kind of bullying. he leaves the cafeteria.
12:09 pm
he comes back with the shotgun and opens fire. a very troubling situation in the cafeteria. he did say there was a deputy in the cafeteria of the time, but obviously there's not much the deputy could do at that point. again, a very disturbing situation unfolded in the cafeteria. luckily, all the students who were there were able to get out unharmed. as the student described it, it was a chaotic scene. >> and i think we want to reiterate for parents who are watching and wondering if their child is safe, again, there was one victim, airlifted to shock trauma. the students were immediately taken out of the school and are at the corner of ebenezer and belair road. they are safe. but they are waiting parents transport or word from the

12:15 pm
following this breaking story. lowell melser joins us live from perry hall high school. >> as we have been reporting all afternoon, a steady flow of parents, some with their students, some without. uc way out in the distance, there are a number of students walking in this wooded area from this lower parking lot, where there seems to be emergency activity going on as well. the good news, if we can report any from the story at this point, is the situation is under control. we have heard that from police and elected officials. everything is under control. parents may have concerns about picking up their children, the situation here is secure. it is a matter of finally meeting up with your particular student, either outside of the school or in the parking lot we have been talking about earlier,
12:16 pm
the shopping center that is very near here. i am hearing from officials that the cat executives and police officers are scheduling some kind of -- county executives and police officers are scheduling some kind of news conference in 30 minutes to 45 minutes. we will try to get more information about when that might happen and what we might learn at that point. at the intersection of ebenezer road and kilkenny circle. some parents have their students. some do not. the situation is under control. and it is just a matter of getting these students reunited with their parents. >> alright, we are seeing students, perhaps teachers coming out of the school as we speak. are you aware of anyone still
12:17 pm
inside the school? >> i understand they are trying to evacuate the school in an orderly fashion. i think we are seeing at a steady stream of people walking basically to my left through this wooded area and on ebenezer, down to the parking lot where we are standing. that is another part of this process of evacuation. >> we want to reiterate for parents who are watching, all of the students who were not involved in the shooting -- again, there was one student taken to shock trauma was shot and has been flown to shop trauma, and there is a suspect in custody -- just to let you know the students have been taken across the street to ebenezer road and belair road,
12:18 pm
right where the parking lot is. everyone is safe, everyone who was not involved in this shooting. right now, we have danielle who lives right nearby. she joins us live by phone with more information. daniel, what did you see or hear? >> i live right across from the high school. i saw 20 cop cars flyby, not including fire trucks come up ambulances, -- fire trucks, ambulances, additional vehicles fly by the house. 10 minutes later, the court filled up with at least 100 parents, all frightened and scared. >> as a parent, i know i would be out of my mind right now. >> absolutely. >> it is good to know the students who were not involved are safe at the corner of ebenezer road and belair road. are you a parent, many -- are

12:20 pm
who was able to maybe bring him down. and one shot was fired and maybe another shot was fired in the process. they labeled this a troubled student. perry hall high school, by the way, as baltimore county's largest high-school. we understand that parents are being told to go to the perry hall shopping center, just down the road from the main campus. officials from the police department, the superintendent's office, the county executive's office are trying to pull together a press conference to tell us more about this perry hall shooting. again, perry hall high school, located just off avenues are road. >> i think we are still unclear, tim, trying to ascertain -- are
12:21 pm
there students being bused to perry hall middle school and if so, how are they going to be reconnected with their parents? >> they are pretty much connected. perry hall middle school is across the street from the perry hall shopping center. it is not unusual to have students evaluated from the school and brought to the shopping center. it is a large parking area and can probably handle a lot of students. it is my understanding it is down the street. it is the closest location to the high school itself. the shopping center is also at ebenezer. i think anyone who gets to that location, that is the location where most of the schools are in that area. >> this is lisa robinson in the news from. each school is supposed to have some kind of emergency response management plan in place.
12:22 pm
that calls for some sort of plan to get the kids were they need to go. what can you tell us about the procedures? >> i do not know about the plan for the school. i am sure you remember after columbine, some of the other national shootings that there are pieces in place. i can tell you that moving the kids to perry hall was part of the plan. it is an area that is large and has access, and is in the same area as the middle school. i would dare to say each of the schools as some kind of plan that would involve getting students from the location of the incident to a location that is near their. in -- near there. i am sure these are the kinds of
12:23 pm
plants you would get in first day book? . -- first day bookbags. >> parents have to be told where to pick up their children. they cannot just show what. and there are some procedures. they have to prove they are the parent, have it. >> absolutely. you have to sign a card in the event of an incident, who can we get a hold of? is there someone who has the authority to pick up your job? so come -- pick-up your child? so, those forms are usually filed out on the first day of school. they have to be turned back into the administration. >> so, there will be a lot of
12:24 pm
figuring out where to go and what to do to make sure the parents and the people picking the students up our -- are picking up the students they are responsible for? >> lisa, these things are usually spelled out the first week of school. it is a 2-mile area. this perry hall shopping center would be a likely staging area parents would know about. >> our kids are arriving at school and passing through any metal detectors or any procedures to make sure they do not have weapons on them? >> what is evident at perry hall and at other schools, you have a card, it is a sort of i.d. card. once you enter the building, you
12:25 pm
have to slide that card. it indicates to you are. and then you are in the system. it shows that you are at campus. you are on campus. i am not sure if that system could in any way detect if you were carrying a weapon. again, this is the largest tires cool in the county. about 2200 students. >> one more thing, tim, before you go -- the first day of school for parents and kids. the first big deal, crisis. have you seen him around? he has a challenge in the first day of school dealing with this crisis. >> it is my understanding that is working with the
12:26 pm
police chief and they are going to try to sort out information for parents. they are working together. at every baltimore county high school and middle school, there are at least one police officer at that particular school. case, there is an officer stationed at the school. you'll find that at schools throughout the county. >> alright. very insightful. thank you very much. we are going to go back to the studio. >> all rights. thank you, lisa and tim. as information becomes available, we will pass on details. there will be a press conference shortly. we are going to go to sky team
12:27 pm
11. capt. roy, what can you tell us? >> we have counted 24 buses that have arrived at the perry hall shopping center area. it looks like they are trying to make some means of carrying the children from perry hall senior high school, as far as finding out what bus belongs to what student, so they can get on that bus and go home. we also notice that the school itself, one by one, students are exiting the classroom and working their way up towards the shopping center. police still have a large presence at the high school. an enormous amount of children working their way up ebenezer road toward the shopping center. people are trying to transfer in the area. people have this road block of so they cannot get into the
12:28 pm
neighborhoods of perry hall senior high school. police have ebenezer road at belair road block of. they have a block of about a block east of the high-school a ebenezer road. it is shut down some nobody can get in and they are trying to get people out. so, ongoing, buses are coming in, trying to work out an arrangement to get the students on the bus. everything we can see is very, very orderly. as far as knowing what to do, maybe they got it in that respect, but as far as the students, extremely orderly. there has been no jumping around, acting up were goofing off per se.
12:29 pm
it looks like all the students are taking this extremely seriously, just from the demeanor we are able to see from the aircraft. we will try to monitor this. we will have more from sky team 11. i am capt. roy taylor. >> we will get back to you once you have more to tell us. of course, we have lowell melser on the scene at perry hall high school. just to recap, a shooting at 10:30. a student was shot. best it has been flown to shock trauma. the -- that student has been fun to shop trauma. -- shock trauma. the shooter is in custody. they are evacuating students to ebenezer road and belair road. ebenezer road and belair road.
