inside what used to be the unlikeliest of places, a public high school. >> i saw this kid coming out of the bathroom with a bright green shirt on and long black hair. he had something underneath his shirt. all of a sudden you hear the gun shirts -- a gunshot go off. >> this didn't is believed to be a sophomore at perry hall high. -- the student is believed to be a sophomore at perry hall high. sources describe the victim as a special needs a student. >> it was a random act of shooting. >> investigator said the gunman was subdued almost immediately after firing the first shot. >> as the individual began to pull back several inches, an instructor grabbed him and began to grapple and a second shot was

discharged. >> perry hall high school teacher said the person who interrupted the gunman is a guidance counselor. >> he is the one who stepped in and subdued the guy right away. thank god he was there. >> he was able to subdue the gunman and get him against a vending machine so that no one else got hurt. we are very, very fortunate. >> the suspect is now in police custody. sources tell us the teenager used a shotgun and was armed with 20 rounds of ammunition. according to witnesses, just prior to the shooting, the suspect and one or perhaps more students had an altercation that involve throwing food. sources say he left the school campus and returned about 10:15 with a gun. >> it is a difficult world we live in. had hoped that baltimore county would be immune from this type of activity, but apparently we are not. >> police are still working the

crime scene inside perry hall high school. detectives have not released the building. there is no word on whether there will be school tomorrow. >> we did hear a few minutes ago that there will be classes tomorrow. as soon as the news broke that a student had been shot, parents were frantically trying to get in touch with their children. lowell melser, i've seen you talking to parents and students for nearly six hours. >> it was quite a scene out here. we got here around 11:20 this morning when the story was breaking. ebenezer road was blocked off here by police. cars were lining the entire street and parents will lead running down the street -- were literally running down the street, trying to get to the school and their sons and daughters. here's a look back at some of

the more emotional sounds from the parents and from the kids who were inside the school. >> if your a bus driver, you may load your bust. otherwise, all students will be taken from the high school to the middle school. >> this is nine daughters first experience in high school. she is a ninth grader. -- my daughter's first experience in high school. >> i just ran out. i did not know what it was. >> they took all the kids from the cafeteria out on the front hill. the rest of the kids i think are still in the school. >> i have been here at least an hour, walking up and down the street, trying to find them. they were letting the classes go a little bit at a time.

there's not a whole lot i could do except keep a lookout for him. >> first i heard a pop and then i looked around and saw the gun. we jumped under the nearest table. someone got shot, and it was really horrifying. then they told us to leave, so we ran out. >> were just in class and ms. arnold came over the intercom and said code red. he was not joking. it was serious, and we were all scared. they made us go in the quarter and crouched down. we had to sit there for probably close to an hour and had to be quiet. no one knew what was going on. my friends heard a gunshot, and that was scary. once the cops came in to let us go, they were all dressed up in their uniforms and the had automatic guns and everything. it was weird.

suspected shooter and his family. she joins us live from baltimore county with more on what she has learned today. >> multiple sources have provided us with the name of the suspect. he is 15 years old, just turned 15 a couple of weeks ago. he lives with his mother on this secluded street in a community north of white marsh. a few minutes ago, police cleared out of here and took with them a man in handcuffs. as he drove by in a police car, he was laying in the back seat. we are not identifying the teenaged shooting suspect because he has not been charged. on this facebook page this morning where he uses the moniker suicide smile, he wrote, "first day of school, last day of my life."

>> 11 news has been monitoring the situation from the sky as police blocked off access to the school. captain roy taylor has been on hand since we broke into programming this morning. you saw firsthand all the police activity and the students streaming out of perry hall high school. >> that is correct. there is still a fair amount of police activity. you will see at least four crime lab vehicles here were the cafeterias, where this shooting took place at perry hall senior high school. when i worked in this district years ago, there was only one

police car that covered this school. today i bet i saw at least a dozen police cars at the scene itself, along with other cars in units that are used to block off the roads and tributaries trying to get in to the school. we saw assistance from high mold or county police who had their helicopter going around for quite awhile while they were assessing the situation -- from baltimore county police. moresure there'll be a lot going on with the upcoming investigation on how to try and prevent what took place today from other schools in baltimore county. >> switching gears now,the

sinkhole returned in much larger form and several homes around it were evacuated. the fear was that the road and the sidewalk in the area might be unstable. la jolla still just last month. a storm drain culvert dated back to the 1970's. >> people are boarding up and bailing out, getting ready for tropical storm isaac to strengthen back into a hurricane before it makes landfall in the next couple of days. jaygray is in new orleans with the latest. >> people here in new orleans and across the gulf right now or reviewing their evacuation plans and stocking up on supplies. preparations for isaac began here seven years ago in the wake of katrina. if the french quarter is the heart of new orleans, the canal system that runs through this city and levees that surrounded

are its arteries and veins. it was the catastrophic failure of that network that exposed newborns to katrina's. . the disaster led -- exposed new orleans to katrina's fury. the cornerstone of the $14.50 billion project that now stretches 350 miles around the city is this massive, two-mile barrier wall that extends the first line of storm defense 8 miles further outside the lower ninth ward, 12 miles from the superdome downtown. isaac could provide its first real test. >> we have absolute confidence in the perimeter system to defend us against this storm. >> the current forecast track shows isaac will be a strong category one or perhaps category two hurricane when it strikes, with new orleans

get into the labor day weekend. we are still dealing with some leftover shares from yesterday's torrential downpours. the looks like the showers will stay away from the immediate baltimore area. stretching down into kentucky, that is going to get here late tonight and tomorrow morning, too. the next front approaching us is a cool front, and temperatures will drop from 90 degrees, 76 now and pittsburg and 81 in detroit. there is a temperature drop their with the front as it moves through, bringing us the possibility of an overnight showers. once we get on the other side of it, the weather will be beautiful mid-week. strong high pressure coming out of canada will drop the humidity and produce a lot of sunshine as we go through the middle of the week. this will protect us from is it

in the gulf for a least a couple of days. -- protect us from isaac. tomorrow morning, just like little line of ragged, scattered showers. look at all that nice sunshine tomorrow afternoon and into wednesday and thursday. it looks like spectacular late summer weather here for the next couple of days once the front goes by. the risk of a storm mainly after midnight. tomorrow we will see a chance for showers early in the morning. sunshine returns early in the afternoon. northwesterly breeze will bring in some less humid, drier air and the middle of the week. a one-2 foot shop and a water temperatures right around 80 degrees. this is the latest satellite imagery of isaac down in the gulf. it looks little more organized but still ragged on the northeast side.

currently recording when gusts of 54 miles an hour, and the hurricane center thinks this system will head more on a northwesterly track. it could be a category 2 hurricane as it makes landfall around new orleans late tuesday night and early into wednesday morning. it may get closer to us over the labor day weekend. we have a computer model in our weather center and is taking it more towards mobile and pensacola. it is not set in stone that new orleans will take a direct hit. it could well go up for the florida panhandle or terps mobile, alabama. the more likely track toward louisiana, and that is not good news with the wins coming at 70 miles an hour. it is still a tropical storm. 20% chance of a shower lat tonight and tomorrow morning, then clearing out tomorrow afternoon. lots of sunshine for wednesday

>> a truly frightening first day of school a perry hall high school today as a state and opened fire inside the school's cafeteria, the gunfire hitting a 17-year-old student. >> that state and is listed in critical condition at shock trauma and another teenager is in police custody. david collins begins our coverage of this terrifying first day of classes. >> according to a source, issued a robber shot gun to school in pieces. he secured them in a backpack and we tried to assemble the gun, he drew attention to himself. >> at about 10:45 this morning, a young man we have identified as a student at this high school entered the cafeteria, where he removed from concealment a weapon he had brought into the school building. immediately, educators responded

after seeing this and as they responded, he discharged one round, striking another student who is 17 years of age. >> it was an isolated incident involving one particular individual. it was a random act of shooting. >> the individual has been taken to baltimore regional hospital, shock trauma, and being treated at this point in time. as the individual began to pull back from that shooting, several inches, an instructor grab him and they began to grapple, and a second shot was discharged. but he is the one that subdued the guy right away, and thank god he was there. >> he was able to subdue the gunman and get him against a vending machine so that no one else got hurt. we are very fortunate. >> it is a difficult world we live in today, and i kind of hoped baltimore county would be immune from this type of

activity, but apparently we are not. >> baltimore county police are still on the scene collecting evidence. detectives have yet to return to school to district custody, but we are told that school officials have announced that school will open tomorrow. >> lowell melser arrived on the scene not long after the shooting at perry hall high school. he has been reporting live from there all day, talking with students and parents. he joins us live with the very latest. >> as you can imagine, it was a very chaotic scene, just down the road on ebenezer road from perry hall high school where i am standing right now. this was packed bumper-to-bumper with cars. parents literally leaving their cars, some of them in the middle of the road, and then running down the street to try to get into perry hall high school, running past the police

barricade, doing anything they could to try to get to their children. as you can imagine, a very emotional time for these parents and for their children. we spoke to couple of them earlier. >> she called me and said debt he dropped his backpack and started running because he heard shots. i texted him and said or you said, and he said yes. he did not know what was going on. >> my daughter did not take her cellphone to school. once i got down here and started looking for her, and we heard that anybody that was involved, the parents were informed. i was a little bit less worried there. >> i turned around and everyone was running. my gym teacher took us [unintelligible]

and we sat there for an hour or so. >> i tell myself after a couple of minutes, i saw the person being taken away and i heard person was being taken care of. -- the hurt person was being taken care of. i don't want to go back. >> you can see emotions running very high there. a lot of folks are saying that cell phones are the root of all evil, and a lot of them have cracks with them, especially about texting. it turns out for a george -- majority of parents we spoke with today, they were lifesavers in terms of being a will to get in touch with their children. the kids were able to text their parents and let them know that they were ok. they were able to ease a little bit of the hearts of a number of these parents that we spoke to.

eye on is it all afternoon. >> it does look more organized over the central part of the gulf of mexico. the water temperature is over 86 degrees. the northern edge of the store looks like it is being torn apart by some wind shear. the latest report from the hurricane center is that the wins have come up to 70 miles an hour. it is just under the threshold of being a hurricane, which is at 74 miles an hour. a category one hurricane expected just on the shore of the outer reaches of the louisiana coast line by sometime tomorrow afternoon in pushing up towards norns by tomorrow night. by wednesday afternoon it is passed new orlin. -- pass new orleans.

it should bring some rain to that parched, drought-stricken area in the mississippi valley. the national weather service is indicating 15-20 inches of rain may come down on the golf course when that storm makes landfall over the course of the next few days. the florida panhandle is west be the east of the official track, but not out of the clear just yet. some of the models could take toward mobile or pensacola. it may eventually impact our labor day weekend. we will check out that seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> we had some pretty heavy rain in our area and it reopened a sinkhole downtown. homes have been evacuated in the 2300 block of east monument street. they fear that the road and sidewalks may be unstable in the region.

dax this weekend is the second annual grand prix of baltimore. that race comes closure. >> officials say this year thing should be a lot better. only one side street is closed and most of the work on the racetrack is being done at night. >>, says it all, and for many people who drove downtown last year before the race, there were problems. >> it took us at least three hours to get to work on thursday. that is why we decided to close the office on friday. >> it was a bad drive. it was not a good drive to come in on thursday. >> it was really bad, being to work at 5:00 in the morning, being late. >> some companies plan to close thursday and friday. >> our office decided to close. this year they are letting us work from home because the

are bracing for a tropical storm i said. they are filling up their gas tanks and stocking up on supplies -- tropical storm isaac. thousands in the projected path of the storm or leaving their homes as part of mandatory evacuation. >> today is the date for those folks living in those areas to get out of harm's way. >> ironically, right now the is it is following a path similar to hurricane katrina back in 2005. it will coincide with the seventh anniversary of that very devastating hurricane. >> thankfully, katrina was worse because it was stronger when it was barreling in there. >> i would like to believe they are better prepared than they were back in 2005. >> there are some things you

just cannot do. does look like it will hit the gulf coast. the main thing will be the storm surge in heavy rain. in the meantime, we had tropical-like downpours yester day and there is more on our doorstep. a band of showers dredging at a pennsylvania% from ohio and down toward louisville, ky. there are couple of spreckels on the eastern shore down around the coast. it is cool front, and behind it will feel great in the middle part of the weak ones that front gets passed. as far as rain fall today, nothing. the monthly total is 5.79 inches at bwi marshall. almost 3 inches above normal for this particular month, and 22.44 inches per year for the month. it was a warm day to day, 87 degrees at bwi marshall.

ninth that will take us right to the edge of the labor day weekend at least. sunset this evening at 7:44. tomorrow, a shower in the morning behind cloudy skies, and then in the afternoon it will turn sunny. a warm day but it will start to feel more comfortable in the afternoon. on the bay tomorrow, winds out of the northwest and waves at 1- 2 feet. high tide at fort mchenry at 4:36 in the morning. isaac with conditions pretty good for development. on the northeast corner is kind of ragged and not well organized as it is on the southwest side. not a perfect looking storm and it is not a hurricane yet. it is a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles an hour. he gets up to 74, it will become a caddie, -- a category one hurricane, which they do

expected to be by tomorrow afternoon. right on up to new orleans perhaps as a category 2 hurricane. up into the weekend, it starts to make that curve up into the ohio valley and it may bring us a chance for a shower over the labor day weekend. these are the computer model cracks. put them all on one avenue can see there is still wide range in play, even westbound for electrons and southwestern louisiana. they are concentrated in that area near new orleans, unfortunately. our forecast, the chance for sheriff tonight and tomorrow morning, then sunshine moves in and sticks around. wednesday through friday, temperatures comfortable. a slight chance for showers saturday afternoon and depending on isaac, the rain chance may linger into monday.

i talk to one student and he said the alleged shooter was being picked on by some other kids and they were throwing objects at him. in the alleged shooter said he was going to kill them. he laughed, and as david collins reported, he came back with a weapon and that is when he shot. from what i understand, it is unclear whether the shot went on when he was pinned up against a vending machine or if he got off that shot and then another shot went off while he was pinned against the vending machine. >> i think everyone is hailing jeffrey wasmer as a hero. >> we understand there was a school resource officer, described as a deputy. what eventually happened is once
