experience of high school. >> a day of new beginnings turns into a night of haunting memories after baltimore county police say a student open fire on another inside the cafeteria. the first day of the 2012 school year at perry hall high is forever marred by today's shooting. >> the largest public high school in baltimore county. tonight, the perry hall students are trying to comfort one another after a shooting. a male victim remains in critical condition at this hour. we have team coverage from the perry hall high school shooting. the families are coping in trying to make sense of it. we have late breaking information from the family of today's shooter. sheldon dutes is at perry hall high, where classes are set to resume in the morning. >> superintendent dallas dance said classes will be in session

tomorrow morning, but when parents and students arrive here at perry hall high school, they can expect to see increase security as well as support services for both students and faculty. all this happen because a student brought a gun to school today and started shooting. student at perry hall high school were eating lunch in the cafeteria of around 10:45 this morning when police say one of their schoolmates fired off two gunshot. >> a young man we have identified as a student at this high school injured the cafeteria where he removed from concealment a weapon he had brought into the school building. >> i saw a kid come out of the bathroom with a bright green shirt on, long black hair, and something under his shirt. then all of a sudden you hear the gunshots, often the cafeteria. >> ninth grader sarah was inside the cafeteria during the

shooting and is still shaken up by what she witnessed. >> i just ran out. i did not know what it was. >> a 17-year-old special need student was injured during the shooting. police did not thinking the boy was targeted by the suspect. police say he acted alone. perry hall faculty and staff including guidance counselor jesse wasmer have been credited with grabbing mystique in and preventing the situation from getting any worse. by early afternoon, students had been dismissed from class. parents immediately rushed to the campus to meet their children and hold them a little tighter. carroll is grateful that her daughter is ok. >> how do you send a ninth grader back-to-school after something like that? >> there is a lot of information

a swirling around on twitter and facebook, but the baltimore county police department has not confirmed any of that information. they say it is still too early in the investigation. earlier this evening, jayne miller broke exclusive news on the shooter. kai reed has more details. >> the sheriff just had his 15th birthday. according to police, he walked into the lunchroom armed with a shotgun and 20 rounds of ammunition. on his facebook page, he uses the name suicidal smile. his at date posted before school this morning said, "first day of school, last day of my life."

sources say he was assembling the gun just before the first shots were fired. >> i saw a kid coming out othe bathroom with a bright green shirt on and long black hair. he had something underneath his shirt. all of a sudden you hear the gunshots co-op in the cafeteria. >> we are not reporting his name, pending charges. a sign on the door of his family home says "we don't call 911." someone was home but did not answer the door. the parents divorced two years ago. friends of the family tell us the team is very smart and is believed often. >> we hung out when we read under -- he was bullied often. >> they were always good people. >> the father spoke with the

associated press tonight and said that his son has been bullied. of woman who is not related issue this statement on behalf of the family. they said we are horrified and did not see this coming. our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and the victim's family. >> dozens of students and parents saw relief at st. michael's lutheran evangelical church on bellaire road. some of the families are absolutely rocked. >> they are. between talking in texting about it and using social media all day, many students say they have been inundated by information pouring in about the shooting. they chose to take time out tonight to reflect about what happened and to come together to pray for the community.

school tomorrow to try to establish some sense of normalcy that will make them feel better. they said they are trying to overcome it by focusing on the positive, including the actions of that-counsel, jesse wasmer. he is being hailed as a hero by many because he tackled the attacker. he holds a master's of education. he said the student body impresses him daily with their drive and resilience. any kid who has to walk back into that school and the lunch in the cafeteria, they are preparing for that tonight. >> educators really stepped up in the wake of today's violence. baltimore county superintendent dr. dallas dance spent the day

helping coordinate with perry hall officials during the aftermath. >> when i came on board in july, i met with the fire marshal and police chief and looking at what our crisis manual looked like in general. we were well-prepared for this situation. the perry hall faculty and staff did a great job in following the crisis plan to a t. >> this was also the first day on the job for dr. dallas dance. >> what a difficult day. baltimore county police say a 15-year-old student at perry hall high walked into the cafeteria, brandished a firearm, and shot a 17-year-old classmate. sources tell us the weapon used was a shotgun, and the victim is a special needs didn't. police said the victim -- a special need student. the father of the student who

police say pull the trigger says his son was bullied at school. he says his family is horrified and offered their condolences to the victim and his family. classes will resume tomorrow morning. you can see more pictures and video on wbaltv.com. >> after a nationwide search, baltimore has picked up a new top cop to lead the city police department. anthony batts will replace former commissioner fred bealefeld, who retired earlier this month. batts served with the police in long beach, california, for eight years. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake is expected to introduce him sometime tomorrow. >> tropical storm isaac has decided to mostly bypassed florida and possibly pay a visit to new orleans instead. cities all along the gulf coast are getting ready for isaac, which could be a category 2 hurricane by the time it makes

landfall. president obama has already declared a state of emergency in louisiana at a isaac. that slow-moving storm could be a massive brain machine. >> hope for the best, even as repair began even as sheriff -- even as you prepare for the worst. >> officials say that the storm is unpredictable and should not be taken lightly. tonight, airport officials in new orleans say airlines have canceled all arriving and departing flights tomorrow and many gulf coast schools and businesses are already closed through wednesday. it's the rnc convention will start tomorrow. a sinkhole opened up in downtown baltimore city.

national convention today in tampa were canceled because of tropical storm isaac, but tomorrow, it is on with the show. >> nikole killion is in tampa with our commitment 2012 coverage. >> we have learned that mitt romney will be here in tampa tomorrow as the convention kicks off its first full day. planners say we will try to get back to nicole in just a moment. a sinkhole downtown has reopened. the problem forced residents to evacuate several homes on the east monument street. officials fear the road and the sidewalk near the area might be unstable. the storm washed away the gravel and recycle concrete that city crews used to fill in the hole. it first appeared after heavy rains last month and exposed a

20-inch storm drain culvert that dates back to the 1930's. there is no word when officials will reopen that section on monument street. with the second annual grand prix approaching this friday, a few more down st. -- a few more downtown streets are expected to close. city officials say they have made several improvements to this year's race track, especially involving road closings. a promise that getting to downtown should be much easier for motorists. >> thursday is the most challenging. we know that people have a little more expanding -- a little more understanding of what to expect. once the businessweek was over, and we got into friday afternoon, things opened up a great deal. >> we are told that a number of downtown companies are planning ahead and will be closing for business on thursday and friday. for a full list of street closures and the best way to get

weather, warm but not humid and comfortable at night. a scattering of thunderstorms perhaps before morning and then after a morning shower, skies will turn sunday in the afternoon. the sun will set under mostly clear skies in the evening. 84-89 for the high tomorrow. waves around 1 foot tomorrow. down in the gulf of mexico, the northern side of the storm is not all that organized. it kind of falls apart on the no. 5. it looks a little more organized than the last couple of minutes and is still drifting toward the central gulf coast. it looks like the worst of it -- it is expected to be a category one. not category to like it was forecast earlier, but tomorrow evening it comes onshore in

louisiana. landfall tomorrow night, slowly working its way up to the mississippi river valley as we get into thursday. this is a dry, parched area and it may get some beneficial rain from it. getting into friday and saturday, whatever is left of that, the moisture could come our way for the upcoming weekend. right now is a strong tropical storm, likely to be a category one hurricane when it hits louisiana tomorrow night. sunshine for wednesday through friday. the labor day weekend could turn a little wet. >> the orioles go after a burst in franchise history and try to move into first place in the wild-card race. that is next in sports.

tomorrow as the convention kicks off its first full day. romney is coming to tampa, his campaign making the announcement he will fly down from boston on tuesday. his son craig is already in florida, looking forward to both his parents speeches, in spite of isaac. >> i am concerned for those who live in the path of isaac, but we will carry on with business as usual. >> a small group of delegates were on hand despite the postponement. >> i just want to be here to watch. we paid to be here so we wanted to be here. >> convention officials stressed that from here on out, it is full speed ahead. they are not making any changes to an already abbreviated schedule. >> we look forward to kicking things off. >> it is still a delicate
