as he do d to fire up the crowd about mitt romney. but he served his role. these folks are fired up and i didn't think it was possible, but i think he topped ann romney's speech tonight. whether they meant that to be the case, i don't know. but that is certainly what happened here at the end of the night, brian. >> chuck todd, thanks. luke russert was also on the floor. during ann romney's speech, what was the reaction in the section where you were posted? >> i watched the speech with some women of the delegation. they said it was poetic, touching, humanizing. they want ann romney to show that she had faced adversity in her life. these women felt would help her husband's campaign. they felt she did that and put a great women's touch on this campaign. will it shrink the likability gap between mitt romney and president obama? that will be the big question coming out of ann romney's speech. every woman over here where i was standing, many of them had tears in their eyes.

delayed monday due to isaac. >> i would like to offer our thoughts and prayers for the safety of those in the pathway of the hurricane. >> mrs. romney also expressed empathy for those coping with the storm, she hopes and prays that no lives are lost. >> she did a nice job, nikole. thank you. students at perry hall high school in baltimore county returned to class one day after police say 15-year-old robert gladden jr. shot a 17-year-old classmate. he now faces charges as an adult. coverage of that shooting investigation -- we spoke with a local child psychologist who has recommendations on how educators and parents can help students traumatized by the event. we begin live in perry hall. i understand gladden's attorney is weighing in. >> they told the associated

press earlier today that his client did not intend to hurt anyone and they believe the gun went off accidentally. 15-year-old robert gladden jr. is being held at the baltimore county detention center without bail. he had been charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault after a shooting and the first day of school at perry hall haskell. police say he rode the bus to school and had a broken down shotgun in his backpack along with 21 rounds of ammunition. two shots were fired in the school cafeteria. one of them hit 17-year-old daniel, who remains in critical condition. >> he is so sweet. he was so nice. >> police have not commented on the motive, but they say he acted alone. his this -- attorney had told the associated press his client did not intend to hurt anyone and the gun went off accidentally when he was rushed by teachers. he went on to tell the

associated press that he may have brought the gun to school to intimidate and belize. police say there is no sign that gladden was bullied. students are trying to remain positive. >> it is important that we all stay together. just because one thing happened, it cannot ruin our whole perry hall community. you have to stick together and pray for daniel. >> the alumni association has set up an account to help daniel's family. >> it is a way for people to contribute. we have an account. we wanted to be able to use that accounts for people to send funds to the family. >> the victim's family has not publicly spoken, but released the following statement -- they wanted to thank the school personnel who quickly responded

to get daniel to the hospital safely. the family thanks all the first responders involved in the incident and is asking everyone to keep daniel in their thoughts and prayers. anybody interested in helping out in that account that has been set up by the perry hall alumni association, had to perryhallgrads.com. >> the school shooting may have only lasted four seconds, but the emotional effects on some students and faculty members there will likely last lifetime. we spoke to a child psychologist about the impact of this strategy. >> how you send a ninth grader back-to-school? >> it was the kind of day that leaves a lasting memories, but not good ones. >> i looked around and saw the gun. i ducked under a table. >> this child psychologist says that students, parents, and a

school faculty are likely dealing with a wave of a motion -- demotions and fears after the shooting at perry hall high school. >> they should look at -- for signs of changes, mood changes, easy irritability, sleet changes, appetite changes, not wanting to go to school. >> he warned that some will try to hide these emotions, and advise adults to get to students in special to open up about what they are feeling. >> the child does not say anything, but it does not mean there is nothing on his mind. it is good to have more family gatherings, more camaraderie in the family and extended family, the neighborhood, the school community. >> while he says that it is important to know the affects after tragedy, it is also important to focus as much energy on prevention it he is challenging school districts to make workshops about school violence part of the curriculum, as much of a priority as math

a recently released 91 walkup -- 911 call is shedding new light on the boating accident that injured state delegate don dwyer and others. >> i saw people in the water. i am not sure. one boat collided with the other. i am 100 feet away from the boat. the whole front is torn up. >> dwyer admitted that his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. he could face criminal charges. divers have called off the search for a missing boater in baltimore county.

investigators say to people slinging -- swimming in it frog mortar creek were separated from their boat when a 52-year-old man entered the water to rescue them. the swimmers arrested, but the other man remains missing. officials say the coast guard will resume their search tomorrow morning. >> 854-year-old man is lucky to be alive after he was shot during a carjacking. they were at a stoplight when tw men entered the car and held them at gunpoint. he managed to get away, but was shot in the leg. he is in stable condition. police are still looking for the car and the suspects. incidents like that are what the incoming police commissioner will have to face. >> dr. anthony batts took to the streets to see some of the google you will be protecting. more on the city's new top cop. >> dr. anthony batts was well

question. in the meantime, we are hoping for good weather. >> it all depends on isaac. the slower it gets, the better it will be for us. the problem is, the slower it gets, the more it beats down on the gulf coast. we will be able to join -- enjoy some nice weather meanwhile. the storms and drenching rain moved to virginia beach, with 6 inches of rain in some areas. there are still isolated thunderstorms in south and central virginia towards a rope. it is trending away from us-- roanoake. it is trending away from us. it only delivered a few hundredths of an inch at bwi. we have been a surplus for the month. we are still over 5 inches below normal for the year. outside, temperatures were warm ahead of the front. it will be comfortable in the next few days, but almost 90 degrees today at the airport.

high pressure system. the storm is expected to slowly move in our direction. it is slow enough, we might be able to squeeze in a chunk of the weekend. right now isaac is moving very slowly and pounding the the louisiana coast. for our area, for now we do not have to worry about storms. wind out of the north at 5 to 15 knots in the day. isaac is getting all the headlines, but we have a new tropical storm way out in the atlantic. this is a tropical storm kirk. is not threatening land areas. the track takes it into the north atlantic. it will probably not make the headlines at isaac is making. 72 mile an hour wind gusts in the southeastern portion of louisiana. 16 mile an hour gusts in new orleans. -- 60 mile an hour gusts in new orleans. it came on shore and then
