without power and crews have restored power to 9,300 customers. take a look at this picture of a water spout on the chesapeake sent to us by a viewer. we are told that one police officer at sandy point state park spotted a funnel cloud. his police cruiser was damaged. northern virginia and d.c. were hit with strong storms. trees and power lines were toppled. nearly 150 customers lost power. the national weather service says it checked out a sighting of a tornado in fairfax county. and now for the very latest on the forecast, let's check in with our meteorologist. >> this afternoon and this evening, watching the storms coming in, the strongest storms were either in pennsylvania or down closest to the district of

columbia and southern maryland. here on tv hill, we got gusts up to 29 miles an hour. b.m.w., gusts were up to 35. this evening, the rain is mostly east of us. we have a couple of sprinkles in our area. clouds are beginning to break up in western maryland. and at the moment, the strongest storms are in eastern north carolina and this cool front went through a while back. almost all of this rain activity that you see on radar right now is behind the cool front, which has gotten out over the ocean now. here's a radar depiction and estimate of how much rain fell in the area and the areas that you see in green are areas that got around or up to half an inch of rain. blue shade is less than a tenth of an inch of rain. seems like we should have gotten more, the storms moved through so quickly, 30 to 40 miles an

hour forward movement and didn't have the chance to drop the amount of rain you thought they would have given the tropical moisture. the cold front has moved through and the clouds are going to disappear. more on the weather for the rest of the weekend and next week coming up. >> all right, john. we will see you in a bit and you can track the storms. try our new apps in full screen. in northwest baltimore, police are investigating a shooting that happened early this morning. officers were called to the 2500 block of edgecomb circle and found an adult male shot multiple times. he is expected to survive. >> before 2:30 a.m. western district officers heard gunshots coming from gold street. officers found two adult males who had been shot. both victims were taken to area hospitals. one of the victims mccoy, died

from his injuries. the other victim is expected to survive. firefighters were out in full force to educate the public about the importance of working smoke detectors. two city residents died within a week in homes without working smoke alarm. residents can call 3-1-1 to have a smoke detector installed. more awareness made on drug and alcohol addiction. the theme of this year's event was join the voices for recovery. in maryland, more than 400,000 people are estimated to be addicted to alcohol and other drugs, but only one in 10 will receive treatment. the goal was to improve access to treatment and advocate for greater understanding. >> a wreath-laying ceremony was laid today to honor members killed on the war on terror. it took place at camp frederick.

department. we have the latest. >> the cause of the officer's death is still under investigation, but earlier reports indicate it may have been a tragic accident. the abderdeen police department is mourning the loss of one of their own. 29-year-old chahares armetta wa killed by a freak accident, a freak accident that has rocked this community. >> he should be remembered as a really good guy. >> according to the maryland transportation authority police who is ill uestigating, the off-duty officer was traveling with 10 or 11 family members in a bus. a person said, the bus was returning from washington, d.c., and pulled over on the shoulder of i-95 near the russell street exit in downtown baltimore. >> i can't believe it. >> joy scott lived next dor to the family for two years before

the family moved out two weeks ago. ->> ott's four children adored e police officer. >> a great, great neighbor. there are other people in this neighborhood that are very upset by the news. >> armetta who has been with the department since 2007 was assigned to the deparrtengo.s dg unit program. he and his partner graduated following a 24-wetwo training program over the summer with the new castle, delaware police depaparment. he is the second police officer to die this week. another died in a car accident on his way home from work. armetta was a husband and father of a young girl who turns one on monday. >> he loved that little girl. everyone can help her understand in the future how much he loved

eaharier. radar is showing most of the activity on the eastern shore, a few little sprinkles in harford and back around the city, but that's agreaut it. farther west, the clouds are beginning to thin and skies are clearing out in far western maryland, and let's switch to a wider view. these storms are moving at a pretty good clip at 30 miles an hour and onto the east and some of the moisture traveling to the north. the cold front is out with a stall line over the ocean. how much rain was measured? a sampling around the area showed at at the airport, half an inch. and almost half an inch at reagan and dulles airport, 16/100s. high today was 89 degrees.
